It was a miracle that she hadn’t been trampled on in the stampede. As Homeworld forces retreated after that ambush on Blue Diamond’s forces, the court was in such disarray that all pretense of decorum fell by the wayside. Gems both noble and common pushed, shoved past, and near trampled on one another as the outcome of the battle grew clearer.
The Rebellion, with their disgustingly strong fusions and guerilla tactics, would win this battle. Those loyal to Homeworld and the Diamonds were forced to flee and secede this sector, with its communication and transportation infrastructure, to Rose Quartz and her army. From this unprecedented outcome came fast-spreading hysteria as Gems attempted to do two things at once – destroy any valuable equipment before the enemy could get a hold of it and flee to the docking stations where their spacecraft awaited.
Blue Pearl did not know who or when she had been thoughtlessly pushed out of the way. She had fallen then, but the Gems around her didn’t stop moving. Feet wider than her entire torso crashed around her, there was stumbling and cursing as the bigger Gems tried to avoid the lone Pearl. At some point, a Quartz must have realised removing the obstacle entirely was much more preferable to going around it.
She didn’t recall much after that.
Now reformed, the Pearl found herself thrust into another situation she was wholly unprepared for. Rose Quartz - the traitorous, regicidal leader of the Rebellion - was standing before her. Beneath her mussed bangs, eyes darted around to survey the carnage. Blue Pearl’s heart sank as she noticed she was completely alone and surrounded by the detritus of battle – her fragile baby-blue form like a feather amidst broken weapons and Gem shards.
Her chances of survival were slim. She had no weapon of her own to summon, nor was there much of use in her Gem to defend herself with. Before she spoke, Blue Pearl steeled herself in preparation to meet her fate.
“I am uninjured.“
Her response was in the same toneless voice Pearls used when speaking to Gems who were not their owners. Polite, impassive, devoid of any emotion that would cause other Gems to think Pearls had any personality of their own. As would be expected of a Pearl, she averted her gaze from Rose Quartz, her head down and hands clasped as if she was waiting on her Diamond in a ballroom.
“I see my Diamond has retreated.”
Rose Quartz was most definitely unsure of the Pearl. She’d seen first hand how loyal they were, how stubborn they were to change. She quickly looked the Gem up and down, checking for any signs of a weapon or the slightest hint of fear.
“It seems she has...”
“Do you need somewhere to go?”
Rose politely extended her hand to the Pearl, positive she wouldn’t take it. She’d worded it carefully, in an effort to discover where her loyalty fell. Even if Blue Pearl said yes, she’d still be cautious. This was dangerous territory she was expanding onto.
Rose’s mind swirled, she’d hardly known who she was, she was living each moment of her life without thinking far ahead. How could she think about her decisions when they had to be made so quickly. Everything on Earth went so quick, would Blue Pearl even be willing to start her own life, whose side was she on from the beginning. Did it matter?
The more she thought on it, the more confident she felt. It didn’t matter if she was on her side or not, Rose was sure that Blue Pearl would learn to live a life for herself instead of for her diamond.
