MOVE OVER RAM CHARAN HELLO KEVIN!
As some people know Ram Charan's latest movie Peddi released today on June 4 or I guess yesterday in India.
Do I have and hopes for this movie?
*Checks the heroine*: Jhanvi Kapoor? Yep this is gonna be insanely misognyistic
Now I'm not saying Jhanvi Kapoor is directly responsible for this phenomenon of being cast in South Indian movies for the sole purpose of 'attracting' certain types of audiences but oh my god you came from Bollywood! (This is satire I know the people at fault is the director in the Indian Audience promoting this)
Both Devara and Ram Charan starred in action movies where Jhaanvi Kapoor is the heroine with a seemingly confusing plot and sorta misogynistic hero? I dunno I don't think Ram Charan and Jr Ntr are taking this Rajamouli curse pretty well.
Don't worry after a few flops you too will escape like Prabhas with a Kalki or Salaar. It only took him like, four years and three movies.
Hey Ram charan you're almost there! This is your second movie, just one more to go!
This is no hate to the actors in all honesty they act beautifully it's just the roles are kinda . . .
I mean I know mainstream Indian movies are supposed to have a bit of overt misogyny but these movies they've done recently is giving 2013 levels of misogyny.
Hey! I'm not saying Devara didn't have a good concept it's just the execution or at least the plot in the end was kinda predictable a-Katappa copy! Instead of Bahubali's dad dying by Katappa it's Devara's father dying (possibly) by his hand? The movie overall wasn't doing it for me but like what you like.
Anyway the purpose of this post isn't to debate whether or not I'll like watching Peddi no it's about a post I saw on instagram recently.
I do not keep up with promotions for any Indian movies, heck i don't even do it for American movies (Except if it involves Anthony Mackie and Sebastian stan, I'm a newgen sambucky shipper so I've been gobbling up as much content of them in interviews as I could) so I didn't think about looking at any promotional material for the movie since I wasn't really interested in it anyway.
I don't know where the popularity started but Kevin Kunta a professional MMA fighter who also acts as a bodyguard for Ram Charan in his nationwide tour for Peddi has been growing in fame from fans of Ram Charan due to his easy strength, humble nature and overall attitude and fashionable looks.
This is Kevin Kunta btw
He recently also protected jhaanvi Kapoor (I feel like I'm spelling that wrong) in a promotional event when a fan rushed to meet Ram Charan. Kevin Kunta acted quickly grabbing the fan mid run and carrying him away from a visibly startled Jhaanvi kapoor (I hope she's doing okay).
You know how much that man probably weighed? In the 220 lbs at least.
And While the fan didn't have bad intentions just wanting to meet his favorite actor (Ram Charan) which he did get to do because of course he did. It could've been a dangerous situation and people admired how Kevin handled the situation with ease.
After watching a couple of videos all I could think was . . .
Wow he's really attractive-And that he's great at his job!
Some people are debating if introducing Kevin was a publicity stunt or something which I personally don't care about however like with usual publicity there is also a downside and I wanted to address some of it.
I saw a comment suggesting that Kevin should play a villain role in a future tollywood movie which I found disgusting because of the insinuation that black men are only fit for negative roles in Indian media which unfortunately is a longheld practice. Look at Saaho where Black actors were used as side characters that were the goons that the hero had to fight/shoot in one of the scenes. But from what I know this isn't exclusive to just how Black actors are portrayed in Indian cinema but also actors of other nationalities are sidelined to background roles usually as obstacles the main hero has to defeat. Take Pushpa 2 for example where Pushpa jumps out of the container in japan and starts beating up all the Japanese actors who play goons trying to stop him from--honestly I don't even remember what exactly It's been so long since I watched that movie and I didn't even really like either of the movies.
Now I don't know everything about Indian politics and won't pretend I do but I do know that colorism, culture clashes and racism plays a huge role in everyday life in india and these movies and comments reflect that sentiment.
Some people have also suggested he gives off hero material which is a better remark that made me smile a little because yeah! He's handsome, fit and stylish! He should be getting praise.
He made a statement on Insta thanking the fans for their support but even then when there are comments praising him with some of them are backhanded calling him a kukka or dog, King Kong, downplaying his achievements as an MMA fighter to just Ram Charan's bodyguard, weird comments about changing his hair to look better etc. They might have positive intentions but negative connotations because of how uneducated/ignorant the public is referring to him as an object rather than person when calling him Kukka, Obviously referring to gorillas and a racist sterotype when referring to him as King Kong, not respecting him as an individual when only calling him Ram Charan's body guard and suggesting Black hairstyles are 'ugly' when telling him to change his hair.
It's really disgusting and I hope he doesn't see those comments.
I'm happy Kevin Kunta is getting mostly positive feedback with only the occasional racist comment on youtube and insta and hope he continues to have a successful career in MMA. I don't watch sports but I might find time to watch a few clips here and there just to see what it's about.
There wasn't really a point to this post I guess just to thirst a little and y'know spread awareness about some tollywood news and some social commentary. I don't think anyone really cares but I guess I wanted to rant a little.
Anyway check out Kevin's insta linked here
