day fourteen: cake, 496 words (and a little nsfw!)

There’s a cake from his favourite bakery in the break room, and he blushes when Dr. King says that she’s looking forward to working with him during his residency, that she’s glad this isn’t goodbye.
It’s not just that it’s an attending saying all of this, it’s that it’s Dr. King, it’s Mel.
He can’t help the crush he’s had on her since the first day of his ER rotation.
And now that he matched at PTMC for his residency, he doesn’t know how he’s going to make it through the next four years.
He doesn’t eat the slice of cake someone hands to him, stomach in knots, so she makes him take the leftovers at the end of their shift.
As they walk to her car, he lets her ramble about patients and hospital politics and journal articles she’s read like he usually does.
But he doesn’t go around to the passenger side, and it makes her pause.
Then he reaches for her, grabbing at her waist, and gets caught in her orbit. He’s been half hard all day with her attention and praise, and he can’t take it anymore.
She puts her hand on his chest, and he thinks she’s going to push him away, reprimand him, but she pulls him closer by tugging his scrub top.
He drops the cake box to the ground and drops his forehead to hers.
It’s dizzying, their chests brushing with every breath, lips almost touching, her hand warm against his chest. He’s so hard now, she must be able to feel it because there’s hardly any space between them.
“Dr. King,” he whispers. “Mel.”
Her hand trails down his abdomen, making his breath hitch, and he thinks she’s going to put her hand in his pants, jerk him off right here in the hospital parking garage. But she just puts her hand on his hip, moving him closer until he’s pressed against her.
He starts to apologize, but she cuts him off, tells him it’s OK.
“C’mon, you can do it, baby,” she says, and he whines, hips thrusting involuntarily, making his clothed cock grind against her. “What do you need?”
“Just you.”
“You have me, Frank.”
She never calls him that. It’s just Langdon around the hospital, student doctor Langdon when they’re with patients, and Dr. Frank Langdon, my best medical student, when he saw her out with her husband — now ex-husband — and she introduced them.
And it does something to him, hearing her say his name.
Her hand on his hip is guiding him now, helping him.
It only takes a few more thrusts and a whisper of his name to make him come, and he drops his head back, bites his lips to quiet his moans.
She puts a hand on his face, tilting his head down so he’s looking at her.
He exhales at the sight of her blush, knowing she wants him, and asks, “Can we go to your place?”

Abby wanted their rings to match. Gold on gold. Her grandmother’s diamond paired with a classic band for him.
Frank never liked the ring he chose, but it was the one they could afford. He looked wistfully at the sleeker, more stately platinum option and still went with the bright yellow gold that practically glowed under florescent lighting. Abby smirked when he complained about it.
“Good,” she laughed, pulling her dark hair away from her face. “It’s like a warning sign. Stay away, he’s taken.”
She never thought he would be the one she’d have to worry about.

Frank always had a thing for blondes. It was such a cliché to admit, and of course, he could play it off. A celebrity crush on Margot Robbie was innocent enough, boring to most.
No one knew it actually came from Caitlin Redwine, the lifeguard at the Science Hill Community Pool. She was nineteen when Frank was thirteen, and he was well into his twenties when she stopped being the first person in his mind when he wrapped his hand around his cock, the freckles across her nose and long braid down her back.
He did a double-take at Mel her first day, that same shade of dirty blonde woven tightly together, a little mole below her eye. It was his teenage crush all over again, and when he thought about her midway through his second rehab stint, hand down the front of his boxers after Abby missed visitation again, Frank came within seconds.
A fantasy, he told himself, reaching past his ring for the box of tissues on his nightstand. Nothing more.

Abby started wearing her rings again in June, and Frank did the same.
It was odd, cold to the touch and heavy. By August, it started to feel normal again when Frank would wear it more places than around the house and the hospital, when he stopped slipping it on and off in the parking lot, wondering if that morning’s fight was the last straw.
He thought he might never take it off again, but that was before he kissed Mel King, giving into his fantasy outside a 24/7 diner; before her eyes went dark, and she told him that she lived just on the next block; before he followed her up past the front door and into her bedroom, clothes in a pile on the floor.
“Leave it on,” Mel panted against his lips as he started to remove his ring. “You might forget it.”
Frank nodded and kissed her again, pressing her down against the mattress, exploring her soft, slick folds and teasing her entrance before sliding his finger in up to the last knuckle. She whined, hips bucking up against his hand. He slipped in another finger, and her tight cunt clenched around him, the shiny metal of his ring tangled up in her soaked curls.
Kingdon 12 Days is a holiday season celebration of all things Kingdon! This low-stakes fest spans all of December and invites creators to respond to a series of prompts around the theme of "Naughty or Nice."
RULES
All fanworks should respond to one of the prompts on the designated day (e.g., your day one prompt should be one of the day one prompts), and you should focus on Kingdon in some way. That's it!
There are no length requirements for this fest! We might recommend something "stocking stuffer" size (under 1000 words or a sketch), but we will reblog anything. Participate in as many or as few days as you'd like.
Fanworks can be holiday-centric. However, they do not have to be!
PROMPTS
We will provide a "Naughty" and a "Nice" prompt list (along with some alternatives); however, you may mix-and-match prompts throughout the fest. You can also make your "Nice" prompts explicit and vice versa!
If you want to combine prompts, make a multi-chapter fic with a prompt per chapter, or anything else, we welcome it.
POSTING
The holiday season is a busy time for a lot of folks, so while we would love for most of the fanworks to be posted December 1st - 12th, that won't work for everyone.
If you don't get around to posting your day 5 fic until December 20th, for example, that's fine! We will be tracking and reblogging throughout the month. Just make sure to get everything in by December 31st.
And for the sake of tagging, please have the prompt you're responding to somewhere in the header/title. If you're combining prompts, go for it; please just list them.

‘That doesn’t answer my question,’ Mel grits through her teeth, hoping if she allows her frustration to take precedence it’ll mask the fear that threatens to take control. ‘What’s happening?’
‘What’s happening is that today is yesterday and yesterday is today. And tomorrow. And the day after, and the day after that.’ Frank keeps on gesturing as he trails off, a continuous motion that makes Mel feel sick. ‘One of those infinite time loops, Groundhog Day kinda situations,’ he shrugs.
Her vision blurs for a moment, everything in sight doubling before suddenly snapping back into place in aggressive sharpness. ‘Am I hallucinating? Are we both hallucinating? Are open air gas leaks a thing? I know we’re not too far from the hot springs, maybe they're emitting mass amounts of carbon monoxide. We should probably evacuate the area, just in case.’
‘I think the odds of mass psychosis are pretty low, so… no.’
In a classic literature phase, and just finished reading Little Women. Such a fan of the interpretation of Laurie proposing to Jo in Greta Gerwig's 2019 film adaptation, so I wrote an AU using the scene as inspiration, with Mel and Langdon, because I love hurting my own feelings. Mel and Langdon are taking their daily stroll through the woods near her family home together, as they have many times over the years. They walk side by side, and Mel confides in him about her growing restlessness at home and impending loneliness, as he and Becca prepare to depart on different adventures. Becca had an upcoming wedding, and Langdon would be moving to the city after graduating from university. Thus, both of them are leaving Mel behind.
"You don't need to remain here," Langdon reminds her gently.
"What do you suggest I do then? Run away and join a traveling circus?" Mel teases.
At her question, Langdon comes to a standstill. He stares at Mel and inhales, preparing to speak. Noticing he's no longer walking next to her, she freezes in place and faces him. She immediately can place the intention behind the look he's giving her. Their friendship spans seven years, since they were fifteen.
She knows him almost as well as she knows herself. Despite past attempts to avoid this conversation, it has been looming over them like a storm cloud. Still, Mel finds herself utterly unprepared for the question unspoken between them.
She lifts an imploring hand. "Frankie, please don't do this," she whispers.
Langdon approaches, and she turns on her heel. "I must, Mel."
"No, you mustn't!" she exclaims, marching towards the clearing at the edge of the woods and putting distance between them. Langdon follows close behind, trying to intercept her.
Mel comes to a stop once the picturesque countryside that awaits them on the other side of the woods comes into view. Langdon steps in front of her, meeting her gaze once he catches up. "I can't help that I've loved you since I've known you," Langdon says with desperation. He sounds frantic, almost as though he can't get the words out quick enough. "You've never let me show you. But, please let me ask you because I can't go on like this-"
"-I wanted to spare you from this-" Mel quietly pleads.
"-Mel, I need an answer!" His voice quivers. "I've spent all this time trying to be worthy of you, I know I'll never be good enough for you-"
"You are too good for me," she interrupts. "Better than I deserve." She continues. "You have no idea how deeply I care for you. But that doesn't change the fact that I can't love you the way you need me to." She releases a shaky breath. "And I truly don't know why."
At this, Langdon's unable to meet her eyes, his expression pained. "You can't?" he asks in a small voice.
"I can't," Mel reiterates, voice breaking, "Though I've tried. And I will not lie to you and say that I do when I don't." Her voice lowers to a whisper, "I'm so sorry, Frankie. I'm so sorry."
Langdon looks as though he's been physically struck by her words.
"I can't love anyone else, Mel," he declares dejectedly. "It's just you."
"Frankie, we would be miserable together if we married!" Mel exclaims, exasperated. "Our constant spats would surely make our marriage a disaster."
"That's not true. It wouldn't be a disaster," Langdon says. "We can be happy together if you were to say yes!"
"I cannot provide you with an honest 'yes,' so I will not say it." Langdon closes the distance between them and lowers his head to hers, foreheads almost touching. She places her hands on his shoulders. "You will thank me one day when you come to see that I am right," she declares, meeting his eyes.
Langdon tears away and proceeds further into the clearing. Mel stalks after him. "Frankie, you will find someone else who is better than me and fall madly in love with her. And she will be the woman of your dreams."
She grabs him by the arm, and he shakes free of her grip. They walk a few more paces before pausing, standing face to face once again. "But, can't you see that wouldn't be me?" Mel demands, raising her voice in frustration, "I'm plain and awkward-" She gestures to herself.
"-I love you, Mel," Langdon states in desperation.
She continues, not responding to his interjection. "- And you'd be ashamed to have me as a wife-"
Once more, he repeats, "-I love you, Mel."
"Just look at us! We're quarreling now! Don't you see we would be unhappy and find ourselves one day regretting what we've done?" She pauses for a moment. "I cannot bear the thought of you resenting me like that."
Langdon remains frozen in place, taking in her words, and nods in resignation. "Anything else?"
"No," Mel states curtly, "That is all."
Just as Langdon turns on his heel to leave, she calls out to him. "Only that," she sees a glimmer of hope appear on his face as he glances at her once more when he hears her voice, "I'm certain I will never be married."
Mel's heart nearly splits in two as she witnesses how devastated he looks, standing before her, processing her admission. "Because I'm not eager to forsake my freedom for marriage," she says earnestly.
Langdon shakes his head. "No, Mel, you will find someone you love one day, and you will accept his proposal to marry."
Mel furrows her eyebrows, an indication that she's being stubborn. "I will not."
"You will," he asserts. "I truly believe so. You will live and die for him. And I will watch."
Langdon departs and disappears into the woods, leaving Mel alone. She steadies herself as she sits in the soft grass, unable to contain the tears that begin to well once he's gone.
