I give up this is just a witch blog ***Important note: *** if I post something then delete it, it’s just because this is my side blog and I forgot to switch back to my main.
Witches who knit, crochet, or sew, you can make your project into a spell. Before creating it, you can enchant your ball of yarn for a specific purpose. As you’re creating it, repeat an intention every so often. Knot magic is very old, and in my experience, very practical and effective. It’s a great, fun way to incorporate a bit of magic into a mundane (though no less magical) hobby :)
I’ll spend hours spinning thread from wool while chanting as a simple spell for on-the-fly work, I’ll put a strand of someone’s hair into the weft while spinning if it’s for someone specific.
Afterwards I take the thread and wrap it around a candle to burn or tie it to a tree or whatever depending on the nature of the spell.
It’s a great way to get into a trance as well.
I cannot say enough how versatile thread work and weaving is for witchcraft!
I made a post about Gods Lost To Time, and a couple people expressed how sad it made them, how it feels bad, how they wish they could worship forgotten Gods.
You can. I do, here is how I do it. (A reminder: I am not a priest or a priestess, I am by no means an expert. I myself have only recently started worshipping and honoring these Deities.)
But first, I will say this once and not again
This is an incredibly intuitive practice. If you are going to comment "how do you know you're not working with demons faking being gods to steal your soul?" Your comment assumes two things. 1) that I believe in demons 2) that I believe demons are inherently malicious. I don't believe demons are inherently malicious. My mother believes I was possessed by one when I was a child, but I don't. I believe they are a spirit in this world like everything else and that they deserve respect. If they want to come to my altar, that is fine by me. As long as they are respectful to me and my Gods, all are welcome.
Next,
What are the Forgotten Gods?
Forgotten Deities are the Deities that existed in ancient times who's names and practices have been lost to time. Could be from a not-yet discovered civilization, or maybe they're older than the written word, or even older than humans as we know them, or maybe they were lesser-worshipped in known civilizations. There is no way to know for sure if these Deities did or did not exist, we have no way to ask Neanderthals if they had a God. Their names haven't been spoken in centuries. They haven't been honored in centuries. But if we, as humans, have always had some sort of religion, it's not a far stretch to assume that pre-humans did as well.
Prayer
Obviously the prayer is going to be a little different from how you pray to your main deities. We don't know the names of these Gods. We don't know what they represent, or anything about them. I usually start the prayer with "To all who have been lost to time" and go on to my appreciation. "Thank you for keeping our ancestors safe. For teaching them how to farm and how to use the land. For giving them fire and animals and plants to nourish their bodies." Etc etc. Then I give them an offering and say a final thank you, or I express my condolences for them having been lost, say a final thank you, and give an offering.
Building an Altar
My altarspace is currently a mess as I'm prepping to move (not moving yet, still finding a place) so I haven't "built" one yet, but I have a few ideas.
I'd start with a space, obviously, set up a place for offerings, and a candle. It could be on your major altar, or it could be its own space. I'd keep it simple, at least while starting out. Maybe something for the elements, but nothing too big or flashy. As you build relationships with these Deities, you can add and change and remove items at will.
Offerings
I do libations, the act of pouring a liquid directly on the ground, but if I had the means I would 100% burn the offerings. Leaving offerings on your alter space is also a good idea.
Here are some ideas!
Water - water has been around as far back as we can tell. Seems like a pretty neutral and safe offering idea to me.
Fruit - figs are the oldest fruit, but anything. Food is important to life, and for all we know, these Deities are the reason we have them.
Berries and nuts - see above - vegetation was an important part of the diet in ancient evolutionary periods.
Flowers - natural, neutral in my mind.
Wine/Mead/Beer - wines, beers, and meads have been around for lots of years, humans have always been fermenting foods to get drunk.
Bread and cheese - also been around for a very long time
As you grow and build relationships with these Deities, you'll learn to differentiate their energies, you'll learn who likes what, who identifies with masculine or feminine pronouns, you may even be able to give them a nickname to differentiate them from the others.
My Own Worship
Currently, my worship with Forgotten Gods does not stray far from a simple thank you, I'm sorry, and a libation. I don't work closely with any one specifically but rather the idea of them as a whole. I try to say a thank you to them once a day.
One must imagine Sisyphus happy, as we've probably heard before.
I'd like to argue that one must imagine Atlas cares for us all.
Atlas, the Titan who was punished for defiance of the Gods, was forced to take on four of his usurped brother's duties by holding the sky above the ground.
The sky crushes him every day, never giving him a break, never letting him rest. He's in pain every waking moment of his life, and he's unable to sleep.
Atlas has met very few humans. His one attempt at escape was foiled by his empathy for trying to trick Heracles into taking his place. Had he not given Heracles 5 minutes to "adjust his position," Atlas would have been free. Despite this, he holds the sky.
Atlas could certainly let the sky fall. The world would be darkened, life would get squashed, an extinction would begin, and he would be first. What issue does he have with this? His life is pain, his future worse than his present, his days monotonous with suffering.
He has no real reason to keep his position, for he has no reason to love nor live life. If it isn't his life he loves, it must be another. All the living things under his protection must matter to him. All of us must be considered more valuable to him than his pleasure of release.
Therefore, Atlas loves us all. He loves us more than he loves himself. He lives not for his sake, but for ours.
the problem with learning shorthand is that it basically makes any set of long squiggles look like words so you will be trying to read the floaters in your eyes while you’re in the shower. on the bright side i may have invented a new form of divination.
I’m still very much a “beginner” pagan, in the sense that I don’t incorporate it into my daily life very much yet, I’m still researching and slowly growing more and more comfortable with doing different things (not so much fear-wise, more doubting the credibility of different little practices)
Anyway, this means that, while I do have a candle for Lugh, I don’t light it very often. Yesterday was the first time I lit his candle in a while.
And then this morning, I was stressing about financial troubles, and I opened my banking app to find that my state tax refund had deposited!! I was expecting a paper check, so this was completely unexpected!!
Anyway, I’m pretty sure it’s Lugh letting me know he’s watching out for me, so I’m definitely going to do something for him today.
Update: I TAKE IT BACK HE CHOSE A REALLY MEAN WAY TO TEACH ME A LESSON. I was confronted with the consequences of my own actions. Like, I get it but COME ON
My relationship with femininity confuses me. Sometimes it's wanting to wear dresses/skirts and wear my painted nails long. To smell of perfume and taste of honey. And other times it's wanting to commune with the ravens and taste of a dark night forest. To smell of rot
The fact that we think we’re too good and too intellectual to goncharov our faith back to life is what’s Actually holding us back as a community I think
Are you saying that we should start creating our own new myths alongside the old to bring a resurgence of belief and transform pagan practices from a rebuilding of ancient religions to a new living religious practice that grows alongside the understanding of its practitioners?
okay you know how like Loki has dad vibes and brings out youth in ppl and you feel like you can be a kid around him yeah that but also in regards to being a whiny child. you can do that with Loki. you can be loud an unreasonable. it’s really nice especially if you intellectualize your emotions and/or were punished for having emotions as a child
even if it’s about something he’s telling you to do you can still throw a tantrum first. you can make your tantrum the offering. you don’t always need to take hard truths like a trooper
ex:
Loki: you weren’t the one who abused you but you are responsible for your own healing
Me: mhm,,thats,, i mean that’s really unfortunate but that’s true
Me: :////////
Me: I appreciate you saying that like it’s not realistic to wait for my abusers to help me or change anything
Me: okay i love you very much and im going to be honest and tell you what im thinking and its not personal or to be mean okay
me: but
me: it’s not fair though. it’s not fucking fair how come i have to fix everything when it wasn’t my fault !! I shouldn’t have to !!! it’s not fair its not fair its not fair !!!!!!! this is stupid and i hate it and i wanna go home !!!!! it’s not fair and i wanna go home !!!!! they should fix everything not me!!! I don’t want to !!! i dont want to !!!!!!! I don’t want to !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Loki: i know and im sorry
me: im not gonna fix myself im want to give up
Loki: ive got you im here
me:
me:
me:
Loki: you feel better?
me: mhm
Loki: im still here
me:
me: okay ill keep working on myself
Loki: yeah?
me: im gonna frown about it the whole time
Loki: that’s fine
me: :((((((((((((((((((
this applies to everything just be sad and angry and scared and stomp and whine and throw (preferably soft) things around with Loki. even gods throw tantrums. it’s okay. you just have to pick up after yourself afterwards
Idea for all you pagans and witches out there: If you get Jehovah’s Witnesses or Mormons or those sorts knocking at your door, instead of politely turning them away, don on your most witchy, out-there, non-christian-friendly accessories and attire and open the door.
Be cheerful and welcoming! Say you’re more then open to chat about spirituality, take their pamphlets, try to show them any books of your own you have, hell, even invite them inside for a cup of tea by your altar to Odin.
I don’t know how it’ll go down, but I’m almost certain the interaction will be funny af.
I live in Utah, and back when I was still a practicing Catholic (right around the time I started getting into paganism again after a brief interest in hs) some missionaries came to the door. I’m terrible at saying no, so we had a discussion on LDS vs Catholicism, and something I noticed was that they kept repeating the same talking points.
As someone who went to Catholic school from Pre-K to 12th grade, I know a lot about Catholicism. And one thing I know is this: most modern Catholics don’t evangelize. I don’t know if it’s a cultural thing or officially stated, but they tend to prefer to lead by example instead of go out and preach specifically to convert. (Something else I noticed, is that white Catholics give off Protestant and Born Again vibes. It’s weird, I don’t like it.)
Because Catholics don’t really go out preaching, we aren’t taught a script to use to try to convince people to join. Usually, if you ask a Catholic a question, they will give you a genuine (though not necessarily correct) answer. If there are multiple Catholics around, this could lead into a debate, because most Catholics don’t know or care about the official catechism (in my experience, if they don’t like what the catechism says, they tend to treat it as optional or up to interpretation).
When I was in discussion with the lds missionaries, none of their answers were genuine. They weren’t taught to doubt or question or debate their beliefs in order to develop a deeper understanding of them. They were taught to regurgitate basic catch-all answers when asked any question they didn’t know the answer to, and most boiled down to “come to a service and then you’ll get your answer”.
And when I asked them questions about their specific point of view, not about their religion’s overall beliefs, they still couldn’t answer. They kept going back to “well the church teaches…” I didn’t want to know what the church taught, I wanted to know your opinion.
Anyway, I just wanted to let y’all know that, if you’re genuinely interested in learning about the lds point of view if the missionaries come to your house, you’re going to be frustrated with their answers. Be patient with them. Don’t be mean. They’re just kids who don’t know why they believe what they believe, they just know “because the church elders said so”.
Also, completely unrelated, when I was speaking to them, I recited the prayer of St. Francis, and one of them said “that’s a great prayer of thanksgiving”. I am genuinely worried for his comprehension skills. It’s not a prayer of thanksgiving? Not once does the prayer say “thank you”? It’s a prayer of service, asking God to work through the person, so they may help those in need and bring genuine comfort and hope and goodness to the world.
Me, when it’s nice outside in February: Lady Persephone I understand your husband upset you, but can you please forgive him and go back home? It’s supposed to be snowing outside not 50 and sunny. Your marital disputes are making climate change worse.
You can get these today, they're called "Automatic Candle Snuffers" and work really well if you, say, have ADHD and will forget you lit a taper on an altar.
