The Effect of Supermassive Black Holes on Earth Like Planets
When was the last time you worried about the wind coming from our local supermassive black hole ?
Just like our Sun, black holes produce a large amount of particles, radiation and it creates a kind of wind, which extends outwards, smashing into star systems for many thousands of light years.
A new study from Florida Tech's Department of Aerospace, Physics and Space Sciences, as well as researchers from the University of Rome, University of Maryland and Goddard Space Flight Center has looked at how such winds can interact with Earth type planets, and how far out does this wind go.
First of all, what causes this wind ? Unlike our Sun, a black hole is supposed to be black, and contain gravity so strong, even light cannot escape it, however while this is true for the singularity at the centre, matter falling into the black hole takes its time, often millions of years, and as dust and gas is pulled around, it bumps into each other and begins to heat up, in the same way your hands do when you rub them together.
As matter heats up, it begins to emit radiation and particles that are sped up, and it's this radiation and blasted particles that become the wind from the black hole.
So what can this wind do to planets like Earth ? Well, strip away our atmosphere in extreme cases, destroy ozone, mess about with the chemistry of our atmosphere, bath the planet in ultra violet light which is fatal to most life as we know it. All in all, it's a bad look when the wind blows in from one of these.
The good news is, the researches believe our own Sag A* black hole wind probably extends only to about 5,000 light years at most, and given the fact we're not far off 30,000 light years from it, it makes our region of the galaxy a quiet harbour from the storm.
Some galaxies are far more active than our own, and contain supermassive black holes so huge this wind can extend far beyond the galaxy stars themselves, not only stripping all possible planets of atmospheres but rendering the hydrogen gas too warm to combine together and form new stars.
The research however has assumed that the winds are distributed out evenly around the black hole, but many create jets emanating from the polar regions, which may contain much more of the wind, than at the equatorial areas, so more research is needed to understand this dynamic and how that impacts on the surrounding areas of space.
