With that aside, I need to warn that I am not the best at expressing myself so if this ends up a long disjointed tangent I apologize lmao Here it goes, directly out of my notes' app efjwif
I can't stress enough how much I love the eyes' theme Guard has and how it connects to Mesi.
The squiggles over characters' eyes are central to understanding when is it we are looking through Guard's perspective and when it's through another character's or a 3rd person party.
The begining chapter of the story 'It is the Sun eve' has Guard & Mesi's first appearance and conversation, and because it is technically from Mesi's point of view, she doesn't have a squiggle, partial or not. The perspective changes to Guard's pov only after he is called to meet the Suncat, hence why his parents have squiggles over their eyes and Suncat is bathed in that golden glow.
Similar thing happens in 'Young and passionate' where we are again looking through Mesi's pov for the most part, only changing to Guard's perspective when he is looking at Suncat.
It is also so interesting to note how we do get a Mesi perspective of Suncat, but it's different from Guard in how she only sees Her glowing behind the kitten, while for Guard Suncat is glowing. She can't connect to Suncat as anything other than a house for Her.
It's in 'Only her, just her' that we see where these squiggles come from. On page 2 Sugarpaws has a partial squiggle over her eyes, while Ginger ear and Ms Tortie do not.
It shows (at least imo) how Guard already had a fear or mistrust for his mother due to the abuse he was facing in his training, but still didn't have a reason to fear others in the cult. Same goes for his dad in page 5 as he drags him away from Ginger ear.
After getting Ginger ear to fight him though, that's when Guard fully starts fearing everything and everyone, as per the monologue as well "He should only be loyal to her [...] To achieve that, he must fear everything that isn't Her. Learn that everything is a danger. Because it is. [...] Everyone else is untrustworthy, going to snap at any moment. [...]"
His parents traumatised him above and beyond, making him lose any and all trust of anyone in the cult that isn't Suncat. He sees everyone as a threat and that's represented in the squiggles. Every cat in the crowd at page 18 & before has them, including Mesi.
After their fight and helping him change the others' mind though (page 33), Mesi acquires a partial squiggle. Despite still being gripped with apprehension and fear, Mesi managed to get through Guard, because by now, if he didn't become a guard or served Suncat, he would have nothing. And Mesi understood that. They saw eye to eye.
Now let's expand on that comment about the characters'povs from earlier!
We can see another good example of perspective shifts during 'Come back to me' when Sugarpaws first approaches Suncat! While the conversation is just between the two there are no squiggles, but the moment Guard steps in, suddenly Sugarpaws' eyes are nowhere to be seen.
This keeps up for two more pages, until Suncat literally nudges Guard's point of view to the side for her to take it instead.
Sugarpaws has her eyes visible again while Suncat maintains perspective, until page 8, where Sugarpaws takes the lead with her pink-purple & green "My god wife left me on read" palette.
The palettes in the comic are also a great indication of who's perspective we are looking through! 'Denial' is a perfect show of that! Page 6 has all three cats' perspectives represented through chapters' palettes with their own povs ('Guard talks to god 2' for Guard, 'Selfish' for Suncat and 'Come back to me' for Sugar).
It's fun to see in page 8 to 12 how Sugar's pink & green palette mixes with Guard's squiggles to hammer down the fact that this argument includes only the two of them, spiraling into their own fears.
And NOW I get to this chapter. When Guard first sees Mesi, she has the partial squiggle.
This is still him going off of his opinion on her from their previous fight. The moment he sees what's happening and what she is doing-
He lunges. The moment they make contact, the palette changes.
Notice how Suncat's colors stay the same. This fight and moment is between the two of them.
I think this next panel is the last look Guard gives Mesi, still holding onto his gratitude to her for helping him.
It's really ironic though, she helped him be able to do what he is doing right now. Protecting and caring for Suncat.
From the next panel on, there's not a single time we see her from his perspective without a full squiggle. Any trust or positivity he has ever had for her are gone.
We then get a perspective change with Mesi looking at Suncat (no squiggles and Mesi's palette is still red)
Note how Suncat's palette doesn't change or match any of Guard or Mesi's, but Her color matches Mesi's eyes. She is so focused on killing Her that she doesn't really register Suncat as a part of this situation.
That also checks out with her tunnel vision when she leaves Kuutamo in 'Senior Guard'. Her eye color is the same here as it is in 'The face off'.
So the scene continues from Mesi's perspective up until this moment here
where Guard lunges in.
We get one last look from Mesi's perspective until-
Her desperate quest at redemption literally blinded her. She was so set on making it up to Viima and clearing her consciousnesses, she didn't realise she was inflicting the same exact pain HE went through.
Ooooh yummy parallels...
I also read it as Guard taking anything he has ever had for her back. He is not letting her fool him again and so he would not give her an opportunity to show him her eyes permanently. He is ready to do anything to protect his daughter.

"Guard Talks to god 3" (colorized) - I loved it when in the latest pages Guard said "It's guarding time" and guarded all over the place

I tried to stay as ✨shaped✨ as possible to the original (the art direction of this comic is absolutely SCRUMPTIOUS in both composition, design AND colors, I am observing it under a microscope as we speak)
