The Frinkiac search engine can find screencaps for that Simpsons quote
In a flashback from the classic “Much Apu About Nothing” episode of The Simpsons, adenoidal genius Professor John Frink describes the awesome, UNIVAC-style computer he has created: “Sure, the Frinkiac 7 looks impressive–Don’t touch it!–But I predict that within 100 years, computers will be twice as powerful, 10,000 times larger, and so expensive only the five richest kings in Europe will own them.” What the professor could not have predicted is that, in 2016, there would be a Frinkiac search engine capable of matching Simpsons quotes with the appropriate screencaps, drawing from the first 15 seasons of the long-running animated series.

Yahoo Sports Launches The Vertical
By Bob Condor, Vice President of Yahoo Sports Media
Today, we’re expanding our sports offerings with the launch of The Vertical with Woj, a new basketball-centric site run by our own Yahoo NBA insider, Adrian Wojnarowski. As part of Yahoo Sports, fans will get a unique look inside the NBA as Adrian and his team of world-class journalists, insiders and experts share a constant stream of breaking news, in-depth storytelling, front office deals, global draft analysis and the sneaker game. The Vertical will be the can’t-miss destination for all things NBA across desktop and mobile. State Farm® is one of the first brands to connect directly with basketball fans as a premier sponsor of The Vertical.
The Vertical will feature an array of leaders in the industry to tell the full story around the NBA and its culture, including Chris Mannix, Michael Lee, Shams Charania, Bobby Marks, a 20-year NBA front office executive, Jonathan Givony and Mike Schmitz of DraftExpress.com, Nick DePaula of NiceKicks.com, Tim Grover, longtime trainer of Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, and former player Brian Scalabrine. Joe Garza, who has been a member of the Yahoo Sports team since 2012, will direct the site’s day-to-day content and coverage. Johnny Ludden, Yahoo Sports’ Editor-in-Chief, will oversee The Vertical’s content strategy and mission working closely with Garza and Woj on a shared vision.
“Every day on The Vertical, we will be committed pulling the curtain back on the NBA and delivering our audience exclusive, compelling content, ” The Vertical editor Adrian Wojnarowski said. “We will be a 24 hour, seven-day a week news and storytelling operation. We will be relentless in pursuit of dominating the landscape of basketball media. That will be our charge every day.”
The Vertical features custom integrated advertising opportunities for brands to connect with basketball fans across screens. State Farm has a history of engaging fans around their favorite sports experiences, and sponsoring The Vertical is the latest in these efforts. State Farm will connect with consumers through high-impact display and pre-roll video ads, as well as branded integrations around video content on The Vertical. The State Farm campaign will also capitalize on events such as All-Star Weekend to reach sports fans on The Vertical, and extend its campaign through pre-roll video, native video and display ads across additional Yahoo properties.
In addition to The Vertical, Yahoo Sports recently launched a podcast in December called “The Vertical Podcast with Woj,” in partnership with DGital Media. The audio series began with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver as the first guest, and publishes new episodes each Wednesday, along with regular breaking news reports. On January 27, as an extension to Adrian’s podcast, DGital Media and Yahoo Sports launched “The Vertical Podcast with JJ Redick,” a new audio offering featuring current Los Angeles Clippers guard J.J. Redick. The podcast will publish new episodes each Tuesday, with a lineup of guests that will bring fans of all sports closer to the weekly goings-on in the NBA than ever before.

Yahoo Women in Technology Profile: Keren Baruch, Product Manager, Desktop Mail Growth
posted by Michael McGovern, Talent Community Manager
Meet Keren, Yahoo’s Product Manager for Desktop Mail Growth in our Sunnyvale, CA office. Keren joined Yahoo’s Rotational Marketing Associate Program in 2013 where she worked in consumer analytics, international marketing, and product marketing before she was recruited onto the product team. Prior to Yahoo, she interned at Grovo in New York, NY. Keren studied at Barnard College of Columbia University where she received her Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Social History. Keren has always had a passion for women’s leadership - while in college, she was highly active in the Athena Center for Leadership Studies, where she served as a student advisory board member and launched a social action project to mentor high school girls about careers in technology.
How did you get interested in tech?
While studying at Barnard in New York, the most visible career paths were in finance and consulting - but neither felt right for me. A mentor suggested I take my passions elsewhere. She said, “You’re too out of the box - you should work in tech.” Even though I didn’t know much about the tech industry at the time, I landed an internship with a great edtech startup in New York called Grovo. After a taste of the pace and intensity of innovation in the tech industry, I knew I’d never look back.
What is it like working for Yahoo?
Yahoo mirrors the dynamism that made me fall in love with tech initially. It’s amazing to be a part of this renaissance moment in Yahoo’s history where so many smart people are working together to spread the Yahoo love to users across the globe. Because we’re in a period of transformation, there’s a lot of flexibility and opportunity to take on different challenges.
I’ve been fortunate to gain experience in multiple areas of Yahoo’s business through a rotational associate program. I started off in Product Marketing, where I developed deep knowledge of Yahoo’s products and marketing channels. Next, during my time in Marketing Research and Insights, I worked on consumer segmentation, lifetime value analysis, and a training program in Hive (a database query language) for non-technical Yahoos. Finally, I moved to London for six months to work with our international markets, where I developed and furthered a global understanding of Yahoo’s presence.
I’ve recently transitioned to Product and am super excited about my newest challenge: figuring out how to grow users and usage of Yahoo Mail as a Product Manager for webmail growth.
What is your connection to women in tech?
Trying to advance women in underrepresented fields is in my blood - I was heavily involved with Barnard’s Athena Center for Leadership Studies, dedicated to the advancement of women leaders. After realizing the power and reach of the tech industry and experiencing the gender imbalance in the field, I knew I wanted to create change. Through the Athena Center, I developed a social action project to mentor high school girls on careers in technology. I’m proud I was able to teach these young women about tech careers, and can now be a role model through my work at Yahoo. A couple of months ago, Yahoo for Good gave me the opportunity speak on a panel to high school students with Hack the Hood. It felt awesome to be able to advise and inspire with the opportunities Yahoo has given me.
Why is diversity important to you?
This is a no-brainer. At a macro level, there is plenty of research that shows that diversity in business drives innovation and improving gender equality across fields leads to economic growth. My growth team for Yahoo Mail represents an even more acute microcosm in which diversity is not only helpful, but essential in order to keep up. Our job is to drive growth for Yahoo Mail, a product that has been around for almost 18 years. We have scale, yes, but we also need to be extremely creative and resourceful in developing growth ideas that move the needle and take into account the diversity of our users. This requires that everyone brings a unique perspective to the table, something only achievable through a commitment to diversity.
What is your advice to aspiring women who are considering a career in STEM?
If you’re already considering a career in STEM, you’re doing the right thing! When I was younger, I found out pretty late that this was an option for me and wish I’d learned more about the technology industry sooner. Apart from this, I always tell women (and men) asking for advice to try things that are daunting or may not obviously result in success. I took an Athena Leadership Lab in college on Resilience, and the instructor encouraged us to “Try one thing where there is a 90% chance that you will fail.” I took this advice to heart and challenged myself to try things that scared me. Now I’m much more willing to move outside of my comfort zone. At Yahoo, this attitude has been instrumental in leading me to exciting opportunities where I have to stay sharp every day.
Lastly, what is your favorite Yahoo memory?
I now run growth experiments and work with engineers, but once upon a time at Yahoo I was part of an amazing, scrappy team that put on Yahoo’s live music and editorial activation at SXSW. We all worked long days and got our hands dirty with anything that needed to get done. One night, my job was to make sure that Wiz Khalifa, a star performer of the week, received a bucket of fried chicken at exactly midnight in his trailer. The best part was seeing the faces of the restaurant employees when I picked up the chicken and told them who would be eating it!

“Hello… It’s me. I was wondering if after all these years you’d like to meet.” Reintroducing Yahoo Messenger
By Jeff Bonforte, SVP of Product & Engineering for Communication Products
We’re unveiling the next generation of the venerable Yahoo Messenger, which offers a vibrant new messaging experience, built from the ground up. The powerful new platform integrates the best of the Flickr, Tumblr and Xobni platforms – built to serve you, for years to come.
The new Yahoo Messenger was created with group messaging in mind from the start. We’ve made sharing, “unsending” and “liking” messages, photos and animated GIFs easy and insanely fast – unlike anything you’ve experienced before.
The new Yahoo Messenger is available globally today on iOS, Android, on the Web and in Yahoo Mail on the desktop. It has a few superpowers that we think you’ll love once you try them. Let’s jump into the details.
Photos, Photos, Photos
Drawing from Flickr’s expertise, the new Yahoo Messenger really takes the beauty of sharing photos to a whole new level. You can literally send hundreds of photos at a time and they appear to everyone in the conversation almost instantly.
Not only is the quality of the photos amazing when viewing on Yahoo Messenger, but you can download the original in full quality. And you don’t need to worry about limited photo storage, because the app loads images just as (actually, just before) you need them. It’s like magic.
Love It or Unsend It
Today’s messaging services are either ephemeral or permanent. The new Yahoo Messenger is both. You can “unsend” any message, photo or GIF, and it will vanish instantly from the conversation (not only from your view but everyone else’s too). Poof!
Of course, at the other side of the spectrum is love. Show some love with a “like” on any comment, photo or GIF. Unsend and “like” are not only good for 1:1 conversations, but they are also invaluable for groups. For example, at Yahoo, when we’re deciding where to meet for lunch, people throw out options on Yahoo Messenger and the group votes on their favorite using “like.”
GIFs Are The New Emoji
Before emojis there was that awkward moment in messaging where you were unsure what the other person really meant. Then came emojis, which helped you to express yourself. But why limit your reaction to an emoji? Everyone loves a GIF!
Now you can search and find the perfect GIF in the new Yahoo Messenger app. Get instant access to a virtually unlimited and ever-growing library of GIFs pulled from the Tumblr community, where tomorrow’s most popular GIFs are born each day.
Smart Contacts
Like Yahoo Mail, the new Yahoo Messenger has a brilliant smart contacts system behind the scene, powered by Xobni’s industry-defining platform. This is critical, because even more than email, messaging is all about the “who” in your life.
For example, our smart contacts system doesn’t just understand who you know, it also understands the relationship between your contacts, so adding people to the group is really fast and simple. Also, anyone in a group can add another participant, change the name of the group or even change the group photo.
Really Fast…Seriously
Speed with communications is critical and the new Yahoo Messenger sets the bar in speed. In an area like photo sharing, it is almost inconceivably fast. Syncing conversations between Yahoo Messenger on the Web, in Yahoo Mail and your smartphone happens almost in real-time.
And if you’re offline or have low connectivity (say when you’re flying or in a remote area), you can continue to use the app and send messages or photos. When you’re connected, Yahoo Messenger automatically sends them through without you having to resend or refresh.
And More To Come
Today’s launch is just the beginning. We’re going to continue to work hard to build the best messaging product that you won’t be able to live without!
Give it a try and let us know what you think. Still using our old Yahoo Messenger? Read more here.
Welcome back, NBA.
