A male Roe Deer, a roe buck. 1. Those antlers regrow every year Unlike horns, roe buck antlers are shed and regrown annually. In Sweden, bucks usually drop antlers in late autumn or winter and regrow them in spring. 2. Antlers start soft and fuzzy (“velvet”) When growing, antlers are covered in a blood-rich velvet layer. Bucks rub this off on trees and bushes once the antlers harden — often leaving scrape marks. 3. They’re surprisingly small deer A roe deer is much smaller than a moose or red deer. Adults usually weigh around 20–35 kg, though size varies by habitat and region. 4. They can jump incredibly well Roe deer are famous for their bounding leap called “stotting” — they can spring over fences and thick brush with impressive agility. 5. They bark like dogs When alarmed, roe deer often make a short barking sound that can genuinely sound like a dog in the forest. 6. They’re masters of hiding Fawns spend much of their early life lying completely still in grass or vegetation. Their spotted coat helps camouflage them. 7. Strange pregnancy timing Roe deer have a delayed implantation system. Mating happens in summer (the rut), but embryo development pauses for months so fawns are born in late spring when food is abundant. 8. The Common Goldeneye is a master of northern waters. 🦆❄️ (Bucephala clangula) With its unmistakable golden eyes and bold black-and-white appearance, this diving duck thrives in cold climates and often nests in tree cavities near lakes and rivers. In spring, males perform spectacular courtship displays, throwing their heads back in dramatic fashion to impress females. Blue auroras are indeed more common around the equinoxes (March and September) at high latitudes due to a combination of magnetic geometry and atmospheric chemistry. The Role of Ionized Nitrogen (N2+) The striking blue and purple hues in an aurora are produced by ionized molecular nitrogen (N2+). Excitation: When high-energy solar particles collide with nitrogen molecules in the atmosphere, they can strip away an electron, creating (N2+). The "Sunlit Aurora" Effect: While nitrogen can glow blue at low altitudes (below 60 miles/100 km) during intense storms, a specific "sunlit aurora" occurs at much higher altitudes. When the upper atmosphere is still bathed in UV sunlight (during twilight at dawn or dusk), (N2+) created by the aurora absorb this solar energy and re-emit it as a bright blue light. Why the Equinoxes and High Latitudes? The Russell-McPherron Effect: Around the equinoxes, the Earth's tilt aligns its magnetic field more effectively with the Sun's magnetic field. This creates "cracks" or openings that allow more solar particles to penetrate the atmosphere, roughly doubling the likelihood of auroral activity. Sunlight Availability: At high latitudes during the equinoxes, the "high activity window" for auroras (typically near midnight) often overlaps with periods where the upper atmosphere is in sunlight while the ground is dark. This provides the necessary UV rays to excite the (N2+) and make the blue light visible. While hiking on the border area between #Fjallsárlón and #Vatnajökull_National_Park I ran into this funnier looking a little beast of a plant, growing in a 5mm crack.! Melablóm is the #Icelandic common name for Arabis alpina (also known as Alpine rock-cress). Northern rock-cress usually refers to Arabis petraea (sometimes called Arabis nordmanniana in older texts). Northern rock-cress (A. petraea) is rarer, less conspicuous, and more specialized to rocky, exposed habitats... Gravel slopes, scree, #moraines, rocky alpine ground , dry, rocky soils, cliffs, highland ridges. And in this case a crack in a boulder sitting in #moraine. Distribution in Iceland is common in highlands and mountains. Much rarer, scattered locations in the north and east. Icelandic name: Melablóm Norðurbergja English name: Alpine rock-cress Northern rock-cress Scientific name: Arabis alpina Arabis petraea.

Rising from the roaring Atlantic, the mighty #Reynisdrangar sea stacks stand like ancient guardians of #Vík, #Iceland. 🇮🇸 Legend whispers they were once #trolls, caught by the first rays of dawn and turned to stone. On the other side the little red-roofed church ⛪ overlooks the town of Vik and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks.
