Loud laughter reaches your ears, Camilo holding onto his stomach with loud belly laughter leaving his lips. His wide and upturned nose dusted with dark freckles, wrinkles and tears begin to gather at the corners of his honey brown eyes. However you seem to be a big contrast to him, frowning deeply with your arms firmly crossed over your chest and legs criss-crossed in the soft green grass. A cool breeze dances through the air of the beautiful sunny day. Normally you'd enjoy gorgeous clear blue skies and a glowing sun but not today. Not now as you seethe with annoyance and irritation.
“Ow!” Camilo exclaims rubbing his shoulder where you roughly delivered a punch. Shaking your slightly stinging fist, you frown at him with a face hot with embarrassment. His twisted expression of pain delivers a momentary glare until his big eyes flicker across your features and he lightens up. Broad shoulders slump and he throws up his hands. “Come on, Y/n! How am I not supposed to die laughing!” He exclaims defensively with a grin across his sun-kissed skin.
“It’s not funny!” You shoot back with a wrinkle of your own nose and deep scowl. Putting your hot face into your hands, you shake your head. Half-regretting confiding in your best friend about the embarrassing marriage proposal that occured just earlier that morning. “Ay, Camilo, it was humiliating…” You groan into your hands, your voice muffled and weak. Dropping your hands, you grab at your hair and shake your head. “Talk about the worst proposal ever!”
Still letting out soft and quiet fits of laughter, Camilo shakes his head and gently nudges your knee in front of him. “Aw come on, Y/n. Nothing could beat Isabela’s proposal.” He says in a light manner in an effort to lift up your spirits. You look up, hands falling from your hair and into your lap. Pride melts through his chest when you crack a soft smile and laugh lightly. Shrugging nonchalantly, Camilo wipes at his tears. “Plus it’s Ricardo’s fault for proposing with a cake. How was your mama supposed to know there was a ring in there?”
When he begins to laugh lightly, you join in and place a hand to your cheek. Camilo’s glittering eyes flicker across your amused but tired features as you nod in agreement. “She could have sworn she saw mi abuela while choking on that ring…” You mutter out with soft laughter, Camilo joins in with his own big grin and smile. Both of you breathe out and calm down, Camilo’s eyes flickering up and down you.
You’re still upset. Scooting forward a bit, Camilo tilts his head when your gaze drops to the ground and your shoulders slump a bit. Gently tapping at your chin with his index finger, your gaze drags up to meet him and he nods. “What’s the matter? He accepted the refusal, right?” The expression across his features is sympathetic, brows threaded up softly and lips in a hint of a comforting smile. His heart hurts at your tired and sad expression.
“Yeah but…” You trail off softly with a sucking of your teeth. Frowning deeply, you turn away and look down at the grass with a heavy weight pressing down on your shoulders. “I’m so tired of these proposals, Camilo. Men asking for my hand without so much as conversing with me once and my parents pushing me towards it. There hasn’t been a single month where I haven’t gotten a proposal and not a single day where my parents don’t nag me about it!” Ranting with quick words and expressive hand gestures, you shake your head with a loud groan before falling back. “I’m just so tired of it…” You mutter out with a soft pout.
The frustration and anger in you pumps blood into your racing heart and heat into your face. Gazing up at the beautiful baby blue sky, you shake your head while laying in the beautiful soft grass behind Casa de Madrigal. Admittedly it feels good to vent out your frustrations to your non-judgemental and supportive best friend—but still those negative feelings remain. Camilo shuffles before he lays down beside you, his shoulder against yours and shoe against yours. His scent of cinnamon and rainwater is comforting.
“I’m sorry, Y/n.” He apologizes softly. Turning to face him, your noses are inches apart. Beautiful honey brown eyes are already looking at you, a soft frown spread across his lips and sympathy riddling his freckled features. “If it makes you feel any better mi mama hasn’t been the most discreet in trying to marry me off either.” When he wrinkles his nose, you smile a bit. “Yesterday she was talking about how good I looked at Dolores’s wedding but how I would look soooo much better at my own wedding.”
Soft laughter leaves your lips, eyes going wide as Camilo nods. “No she did not.” Laughing a bit louder, you reach out and pluck a blade of grass out of one of his light brunette curls. A heavy sigh of exasperation leaves both of you, crooked smiles spread across your faces while gazing into one another’s eyes. You’ve always felt so safe with Camilo, so at home with him. Being with him had always seemed to make the rest of the world and your problems disappear.
Truth be told you have no idea what you’d do if you didn’t have Camilo. You definitely would have long since snapped by now.
Flickering between his eyes, you shrug lazily. Your own expression is one of soft sympathy, brows threaded and lips now holding the ghost of a smile. “Well I’m sorry, Camilo. I guess we’re both going to have to deal with our parents until we find someone.” Annoyance and irritation drips through your words towards the end of your sentence, face twisting into a cringing expression at the mere thought.
Your best friend hums out softly, eyes flickering down as he nods. But your eyes narrow just a bit when his frowning expression slowly shifts to one of realization and he gasps out. “That’s it!” He exclaims loudly, sitting up and turning to you while tucking his curls behind his ear. “I’m a genius!”
Raising a brow at him, your eyes study his features you’ve known since you were kids. The way the corners of his lips curl up and his eyes narrow give you a bad feeling in your stomach. That’s his plotting expression, and usually his plots were less than intelligent and were just trouble in general. Recalling the last time you saw that expression wound up with you having a broken wrist, you shake your head while sitting up. “Nope. Whatever it is, I’m shutting it down now.” You say while shaking your hair of grass.
“Wait no!” Camilo grabs your shoulder ready to defend himself. Meeting his eyes, he smiles big and nods. “You said they won’t leave us alone until we find someone right? What if…we found someone!” He explains as if it’s some big stroke of genius. Contrasting his excited and bright expression, you wear an annoyed look with your shoulders slumping in a “really?” manner.
“Okay…but the entire thing is that I’m not interested in anyone and you—well you don’t want to commit.” You point out in a matter-of-fact tone while criss-crossing your legs and tilting your head.
Letting go of your shoulder, Camilo nods with that same look of enthusiasm and excitement across his features. “Yeah exactly but what if we became a couple?” He suggests with a raise of his brow and nod.
As if reflex, you wrinkle your nose and scoff. “Ew.”
Deflating, Camilo frowns with his eyes rolling. “First of all you’d be so lucky, okay? I’m a prize.” When he flexes his muscles, you can’t help but smile a bit and chuckle softly. His prideful posing and smug expression drops as he leans close to you and nods. “I mean, what if we became a couple just to get our parents off our backs. We could pretend to be together.” He clarifies in a hushed and excited manner, nodding while holding your eyes.
Blinking back softly, your brows furrow and you look at him wearily. Just for a moment your eyes pull away from him, looking down at the blades of grass tickling your skin. For once you find yourself shocked to not think Camilo’s idea is entirely garbage. A thoughtful expression melting away the weary one you wear, you hum out. Truth be told as much as you love Camilo, that love is purely platonic. He’s your best friend and he has been for the eighteen years of your life. Never have you thought about so much as being in a romantic setting with him.
“Nobody would believe it.” You speak through the anticipated silence, turning back to a frowning Camilo. “What? Nobody would! We’ve been friends forever and have always shut down people who even suggested something more to us.” You reason with your arms crossing loosely over your chest, shifting in the grass.
“That’s exactly why everyone would believe us! People love being right!” He points out with a big grin and enthusiastic expression once more. Gesturing out behind you to casita and Encanto, he nods. “Everyone has always been rooting for us to be together. My family loves you like their own and your family loves me like their own. It’d be perfect to get them off our backs.” Camilo reasons with gestures and an enthusiastic attitude.
Wearily, you rub the nape of your neck with a soft exhale. The more he talks the more his words make sense. Still you feel strange no matter how many points he’s making or how right he sounds. Your heart beats a bit quicker as you look back to him with the inside of your cheek being torn up by your teeth. Flickering between his gaze, you ponder over it deeply. You’d do anything to get your parents to back off, even this.
Sighing out in defeat, you shake your head and slap your hand over your shut eyes. “I can’t believe I’m agreeing to this…” You mumble out just before Camilo let’s out words of triumph and bragging. Frowning, you drop your hand and meet his strangely gleeful expression. Immediately, you poke at his chest and narrow your eyes. “But first and foremost we need to set some very strict ground rules if we’re actually going to do this.” Seriousness and firmness grips your voice like a boa constrictor.
Nodding, Camilo breathes out. “Yeah, good idea. I can start. This may be the most important ground rule.” He starts with a dramatic inhale, looking away into the distance just as dramatically. His hand places over where his heart is and he turns to you dramatically with a pained expression. “No matter how hard it is, Y/n, you cannot fall in love with me. You have to fight the Luisa-strength urge with all of your h—“ Shoving him away by his face with a scowl, he bursts into laughter while swatting your hand.
“Augh, that won’t be an issue.” You say with a roll of your eyes and light laugh before you squeal out at the feeling of something wet along your palm. “Ick! Camilo!” Pulling back your hand the shapeshifters tongue ran up, you cringe and wipe it off on your clothes before narrowing your eyes at him. “How old are you? Five?”
After Camilo calms down and you stop threatening to punch him, you both have a civil discussion about three simple rules. No physical affection, no letting anyone else in on the fake situation, and most importantly—no couple stuff where eyes can’t see. By the time you both finish establishing the simple rules, you shake hands.
“Thank you, Camilo. Really.” You speak softly while pulling your hand away with a soft smile. “Hopefully this works.” Camilo smiles gently, eyes warm while nodding at you reassuringly with his thumbs up.

A loud squeal rings out interrupting Camilo, both of you jumping in surprise and looking towards the back of casita. With wide eyes, you look at Camilo who looks equally as shocked when Pepa runs out with a rainbow blooming over her head. Blinking back rapidly, your eyes flicker behind her to catch Dolores standing with her hands folded in front of her. Mierda. Meeting her gaze when Pepa tackles Camilo into a hug, Dolores offers you a sweet smile and wink before she turns away.
Looking at Camilo with a wide and nervous smile as Pepa gushes over the fact that you two are now “together finally” you begin to wonder if this was really the right choice.

Leaning against the thick trunk of a tree, a cool breeze dances through the air and cools down his freckled skin. A big smile is spread across your gorgeous face while pushing a giggling and laughing Antonio. Warmth blooms throughout Camilo like flowers blooming in Spring, his honey brown eyes flickering up to the beautiful blue sky with a glowing sun for just a moment.
When his eyes fall back to you and Antonio, he pushes off the tree when you place Antonio gently on his feet in the grass with a soft smile. Speaking a few words that Camilo can’t hear, Antonio nods and hurries off towards the jungle gym with the other children. Honey brown eyes meet your warm and loving ones as he approaches you with his hand slipped into his pockets. “Got tired of pushing, Antonio?” He questions lightly with a tilt of his head.
Gently chuckling, you breathe out softly. “I told him to play with the others or they’ll miss him. Jeez, he can play.” You respond in a soft manner while leaning in and planting a soft kiss against his cheek. Smiling big, Camilo plants a gentle kiss against your cheek with a nod. Pulling back, your hands fold gently down in front of you and you sigh out softly. A soft look of sadness and apologeticness spreads across your features. “Oh by the way I won’t be able to hang out tomorrow. My mama needs help with some deliveries. I’m sorry.”
Frowning just a bit and deflating in disappointment, Camilo feels himself disappointed and sad for just a moment. Then he shrugs and smiles sweetly at you. “It’s okay, tonta.” Your nose wrinkles and you grin at the nickname. “We can hangout another time.” He reassures you with his hand going to cup your cheek gently. Happiness and warmth spreads through him when you nod and lean into his touch with a sigh. Opening your mouth to say something, Camilo sees white when something hard hits his nose and knocks him back.
Hot pain shoots through his nose. “Oh my gosh! Camilo, are you okay?” You exclaim softly from in front of him. Tears begin to sting Camilo’s eyes as his nose throbs and he blinks back his blurring vision. Greeted by your worried and wide-eyed expression, he attempts to reassure you until his mouth shuts when he feels something warm dripping into his fingers. Your eyes go wider and you gently touch his chest. “O—You’re bleeding Ca—“
“Woah!” A masculine voice exclaims with a loud laugh. Both of you look towards the direction the frisbee came to see Josue walking over with a grin and amused expression. “You’re supposed to catch it with your hand not your face, Camilo.” The boy taunts with a dark glint in his juniper green eyes. Camilo’s blood boils while looking at the boy whose eyes flicker to you as you pick up the frisbee. You wear a scowl on your features. “Pass it back, Y/n, don’t hurt yourself.”
Camilo’s brows raise in surprise and he steps forward while holding his bloody nose. “You made him bleed, you cabrón! Apologize.” You demand in a voice so loud it makes Camilo stop in his steps and look at you with wide eyes. Across your features is an expression he’s never seen, you’re furious while clinging tightly onto the frisbee.
Scoffing, Josue rolls his eyes. “It’s not my fault he can’t catch.” The tan man says while stopping just a few feet away. Camilo swallows thickly, eyes still on you in surprise as your eyes narrow. Both him and Josue gasp out when you snap the plastic frisbee in half with your own faux gasp and faux look of surprise. “Hey! What’s your prob—“ When Josue steps towards you, you roughly toss the pieces aside and grab ahold of his collar, yanking him down to your face. Camilo’s eyes are far wider than any spherical thing in existence, Josue the same.
“Apologize to Camilo…now.” You harshly speak with narrowed eyes and a deep frown.
Blinking back rapidly, Josue gulps before he turns to Camilo. “I-I’m sorry about that, Camilo…” He apologizes in a slightly trembling voice. Only able to offer a nod when you look at him expectantly, you turn back to Josue and roughly shove him away. The boy stumbles back before he swipes up the broken pieces and runs off. Camilo looks to you as you seethe while watching him run.
When you turn to him, your furious expression is gone in a blink. “Ay mi amor, come here. Are you okay?” You speak out softly with a soft expression of worry while stepping towards him, tugging a handkerchief out of your back pocket. Blinking back gently as you pull down his hand, you smile softly and begin to wipe at the blood that dribbles out. “Oh, it seems some of the bleeding has already slowed down. That’s good, let’s take you to Julieta.”
Yeah the blood has slowed down, maybe because it all went elsewhere.
“What a woman…” Camilo mutters softly while letting you lead him by his elbow. Hearts practically blooming in his eyes.

The atmosphere is beautiful, lively with people. Mirabel smiles sweetly while admiring your beauty glowing with the warm lighting all around the town. Both of you wear hooded rauna’s to protect you from the cold and from being spotted outside of Encanto. “Thank you again for coming with me, Y/n.” Mirabel says in a sweet and bubbly manner while hugging onto your arm tightly. Your eyes once admiring the scenery flickers back to her and a sweet smile spreads across your lips. “I know it’s risky coming here.” She finishes while pushing her circular green frames up on her wide nose.
“Tonight has been fun, Mira.” You respond softly while continuing your slow walk towards the end of town to return to Encanto. “Thank you for it.” Leaning in, you plant a gentle kiss against her cheek that causes warmth to spread from her chest up her neck to her round cheeks. The smile across your lips is palpable with pure happiness, eyes soft and warm. Your eyes flicker around once more and both you and Mirabel spot a woman on the curb, a cup in her hand.
Mirabel tucks back some of her dark curls, sympathy spilling into her at the woman dirtied and less fortunate. Both of you share a look of sympathy, Mirabel blinks back softly when you pull away from her and make your way over. Tugging off the rauna you wear, you stop in front of the surprised woman. Mirabel watches with an aching heart as you hand the woman the rauna and the bags of food you had been so excited to try once home. And you drop the last of the money you had into the cup she holds out.
When the woman stands up and gives you a big hug, you don’t seem to hesitate for a moment before returning it with a sweet smile. Mirabel makes her way over to you as you turn and walk over with a sweet smile and shudder when a cold wind spills through the air. Suddenly she feels her shoulder knocked and she gasps out, deep brown eyes flickering to face a tall and lanky man holding a churro in his hand. Nervously smiling, Mirabel shakes her head. “I’m so—“
“Watch where the hell you’re going, woman!” The man shouts, making Mirabel flinch and gasp out with wide eyes.
Immediately, she looks at you when you step between the two of them with furrowed brows but your sweet smile is still sugary. “What’s going on here, now?” You question in your usual soft-spoken manner while looking at Mirabel with a tilt of your head. She opens her mouth to say something until her eyes widen to see the man's large hand dropping down onto your shoulder in a rough shove.
“Hey mind your business, wh—aaaugh!” Mirabel’s hand slaps over her mouth when you grab the mans wrist and twist it into a painful looking position. His churro drops to the ground as he buckles onto one knee. Deep brown eyes look at your angry expression, hand firmly holding the man's wrist twisting. All around, eyes have flickered over to the commotion. Blinking back rapidly, Mirabel has gone slack jawed as you lean close to the man.
“Please learn to not touch women. In fact, learn how to not be such a rude, quick to anger bastard with no regard for civility. Now you’ve caused a scene.” You speak out with that soft voice before you roughly kick in the mans stomach and release his wrist. When he grunts out in pain and falls to the floor, you turn quickly and grab ahold of Mirabel’s wrist. Tugging her away from the scene, she meets your eyes when you glance back at her. “Are you okay, Mira?” You ask with an expression of gentle worry spread across your softened features.
Blinking back rapidly, Mirabel breathes out sharply as cool winds whip across her hot cheeks. A burning hotter than the sun spills into her core from her heart and she slowly nods. “Is it weird I want to kiss you really hard right now?” She questions with a dizzy expression and cheesy smile spreading across her soft lips, hearts blooming in her dark pupils wide.

Sitting across from Isabela with a cup of warm tea in your warm hands, your brows furrow a bit and you chew on the inside of your cheek. Your eyes try to not stare at the beautiful woman across the bakery who talks to a friend of hers that happened to stop by for some pan dulce. The woman carries a bag of bread, holding it out and seemingly offering it to the Madrigal. Smiling just a bit, you turn away and look at the cup of warm tea in front of you. A bit of rouge staining the ceramic where Isabela’s lips had been.
A gentle sigh leaves your lips, hand reaching up to be a resting place for your cheek. You feel conflicted and a little strange while being here. On one hand you’re happy to finally be having tea and conversing with the wonderful Isabela Madrigal, but on the other you can’t help but feel like a weirdo. For the first time in months, starting the moment you bumped into Isabela, that constant overwhelming and looming feeling of being watched has gone away.
For once in months, it doesn’t feel as if there are a pair of eyes burning into each part of you. It brings relaxation to your muscles and insides. Now why exactly do you feel like a weirdo? Well for some strange reason you feel…safe with Isabela. You’ve just met her and somehow she’s made your heart and body calm? It feels weird for you to feel this way over a technical stranger. Frowning just a bit, your foot bounces beneath the table as you try to shove this all away as you have been for months.
“I’m sorry for that.” Isabela’s soft and sugary voice apologizes with a sharp exhale. Your eyes flicker up to meet chocolate brown ones, doe-like and soft while meeting your gaze. Her brows furrow a bit when you force a smile across your lips and shake your head dismissively. Before you can reassure her, she leans forward a bit with a worried expression and tone. “Is something bothering you, Y/n?” She questions.
Your eyes widen a bit, flinching internally at her sudden question. Blinking back gently, you clutch your cup tighter and your eyes flicker across her worried features. How could she tell? In the second she sat down and looked into your eyes, how on Earth could she tell something is bothering you? Clearing your throat, you shake your head with a nervous laugh. “It’s nothing. I wouldn’t want to—“
“Please.” She interrupts catching you off guard once more. Gazing into her eyes, her hand reaches forward and she takes yours. Her hand feels so soft and warm, it feels as if it fits perfectly in yours. Looking back to her large eyes that seem to sparkle and glitter, your lips pull into a frown and your brows thread up. Isabela nods and smiles reassuringly. “You can talk to me. If we’re going to be friends we might as well get a headstart on the confidant thing.” She lightly teases with a wink.
Looking from her reassuring expression to her hand offering yours a reassuring squeeze, you breathe out softly and smile. Relaxing just a bit, you pull away your hand and ponder for just a few moments. Should you tell her? You’ve only just met her and you don’t want to scare away someone that could potentially be a friend. Already you’ve lost and lacked so many. But she looks and seems so kind. And you may snap if you don’t get this out.
Exhaling softly once again, you shake your head. “Okay…if I tell you, can you promise not to tell anyone? Not a soul.” You ask in a softer manner while glancing around and leaning forward more in your seat. Isabela’s reassuring expression grows more worried and she nods with a gentle smile. Tapping your fingertips against the ceramic mug, you shut your eyes. “I—For the past few months I’ve been feeling strange. Like someone’s been watching me for a long time. Whenever I shower, um…before bed, when I’m doing my errands around town—it constantly feels like I’m being watched. And yes I know it’s ridiculous, Encanto is probably the safest place in the world and no one would ever have malicious intent and at first that’s what I’ve been telling myself but then my things started to go missing. My brush, some of my clothing, my perfume, lipstick—strange things…I just…”
Every word that spilled out of your lips grew more rushed and slightly frazzled with each passing word. For just a moment your entire body melts and relaxes, head hanging down and feeling a huge weight lifted off of you. Inhaling the smell of the warm tea, that moment of blissful relaxation and weightlessness is swept away by tension and worry. Slowly looking up at silence fills the air, Isabela looks at you with soft blinks and her lips parted.
Does she believe you? You have to admit it sounds a little—
“Do you have any idea who it could be?” She suddenly questions softly with a worried expression. “Any idea who could be responsible?”
Your brows raise. “Y-You believe me?” You question in surprise, sitting up and grabbing onto the cup even tighter. Complete warmth blooms in your chest when she nods with a gentle smile.
“Even Encanto can’t be the safest place, Y/n. This place has some bad apples.” Isabela says with a gentle shake of her head and a soft exhale. She smiles at you sweetly, a smile that makes you relax and calm down entirely. You truly do feel relaxed and safe with Isabela. And she actually believes you! “I’m here for you, Y/n. Everything you share is safe with me.” She reassures you with a smile before she shifts to that worried expression once more. “That means I want to help you—so do you have any idea who it could be?”
The warm and happy feeling of being believed and finally finding someone to confide in that isn’t scared off is momentary. When her question melts into your mind, your smile falls and your expression shifts to a slightly guilty and worried one. Truth be told you do have an idea who it could be. Your soft eyes flicker away from her gaze and your hands fall into your lap. Grasping onto the soft fabric of your skirt, you shut your eyes. “L-Look I—I’m not entirely certain but I—have this feeling it could be…Patricio…”
A soft exhale comes from Isabela and for a moment you wonder if she’s ready to shut down what you’re saying. Looking back to her, her brow furrows and she leans forward with soft blinks and a hand over her heart. “The seamstress’s son? That Patricio?” She questions in a genuinely curious manner. When you offer a nod, genuine confusion swims across her features. “Why do you think it’s him?”
Blowing a raspberry, you chuckle awkwardly and rub the nape of your neck. “Um…he sort of proposes to me monthly.” You sheepishly respond while feeling the warmth of embarrassment spread into your features. Isabela’s surprised expression doesn’t necessarily help your awkward feeling. “I—I’ve refused many times and made it clear I don’t have any wish to marry him…but he doesn’t seem to get the message. And he’s sometimes been…” Your skin crawls, shame spreading across your entire person and arms hugging yourself.
“Y/n…” Your eyes flicker up at the strange sound of Isabela’s voice. Her expression is one of worry still, nothing seems to be different about her except for the tone of her voice. No longer sugary and sweet, it instead drips with coldness and it’s tight. As if something is lodged into her vocal chords. “Did he hurt you?” She questions with her thick brows threading further.
Blinking back softly, you feel his hands burning into your neck and chin. “He—J-Just once…when I was closing the bakery he became unusually furious and he slammed me against the wall by my throat and chin—b-but please Isabela you cannot tell—” Your eyes widen when Isabela pushes out of her seat and hurries to you. A soft gasp leaves your lips when her arms wrap around your neck and she pulls you into a tight hug, going as far as getting on her knees by the chair.
Squeezing your eyes shut at the first warm embrace you’ve been lucky enough to get since losing both of your parents, your arms loop beneath hers and you slide off the chair and onto the clean flooring. “I won’t tell anyone…” Returning the warm and tight embrace with tears stinging your eyes. Isabela’s hand strokes your head, letting your face bury in her neck. “When did this happen?” She asks softly, mumbling it out still in that tight manner.
Mumbling against the soft skin of her neck and inhaling her flowery and rainy scent, you shake your head gently. “Just two weeks ago…he hasn’t been by since. I’m terrified to see him again, Isa…” Pushing your face against her soft skin, your eyes squeeze shut and arms cling tighter onto her. “I can barely sleep some nights…all of this is too much…”
Isabela exhales deeply, her arms holding you and hands still soothingly stroking the back of your head and back. “Stay with me.” Your brows raise in surprise. “I-I mean stay at Casa De Madrigal. I’m sure abuela wouldn’t mind. The whole family loves you anyway, especially my mama and papa and Tía Pepa.” She says in a sheepish manner that admittedly brings a smile across your lips before you begin to pull away.
Wiping at the few stray tears, you frown at Isabela. “Thank you so much for listening, and promising to keep this a secret but—I couldn’t. As much as I love you all, I just can’t ask for that much.” You speak softly, slowly rising from the floor with Isabela. “Plus there wouldn’t be any excuse to stay there.”
Frowning a bit, Isabela flickers between your eyes for a few beats of silence when she seems to be thoughtful. Then she nods and sighs out, arms wrapping around herself. “I understand, maybe you don’t trust us enough to stay with us.” Your eyes widen and guilt immediately pools into your stomach, Isabela tucks back her teal colored streak in her hair and shakes her head. “We just want you safe, Y/n. And if anything happened to you I think it’d be such a crushing thing to the community. I’d almost feel like it would be my fault...” Her eyes flicker to yours and the guilt pooling in you boils hotter. “What if Patricio comes back? What if he does something worse or takes something more important?”
Fear begins to melt in with the hot guilt. Panic settles through your lungs suddenly not knowing how to work. You don’t want to burden the Madrigal Family or Isabela any more than you have. Of course you trust them more than anything, the ones there when your parents passed and every moment before, after, and during that horrible time in your life. But Isabela is right. What if he comes back and does something worse? What if he does the unthinkable?
Biting down on your bottom lip, your glossy eyes look into Isabela’s. “Are you sure it won’t be any trouble, Isabela?” You question in a soft and slightly trembling manner.
She smiles softly, nodding while gently reaching out and placing her hands on your relaxing shoulders. “I’ll go tell the family right now. You should pack some needed things. As for the bakery, just close early today and tomorrow I can walk you here for work. Okay?” Admittedly, you’re a bit surprised at how quickly she seems to have come up with a sound game plan. But it feels nice, she seems so genuinely worried and caring towards you. Warmth floods through your chest and you nod. “Good. One of us will come pick you up in a little bit. I’ll see you, Y/n.”
“Thank you, Isabela.” You pull her in for one more tight hug which she seems to eagerly accept. “You’re an angel.” She sighs out softly at your words. Pulling away, you offer her a sweet smile and wave before you turn on your heel and leave towards the kitchen.
