This morning, Eleanor and I sat together by the window, watching the light spill across the trees. She’s the youngest of our four, and somehow, that fact feels louder with each passing day. There is a softness to her that reminds me daily that she is the last little one we will raise.

Margaret and I made that decision after she was born. Four children, a full table, a home echoing with voices. Our family is complete. Still, I sometimes look at Eleanor and feel that familiar tug. The wish to slow time to stretch these early years just a little longer.

She rested her small hand on mine without saying a word. We stayed like that for a while, quiet and content.

Today was such a nice day! I woke up really early before Mama even came in to open the curtains, and the whole room looked gold because of the sun.

School was actually fun today! We started a new art project. I’m painting the gardens at the palace. My teacher said my sketch looked “very imaginative,” which made me feel all warm inside. I think I might add butterflies to it tomorrow.

When Arthur and I got home, we did our homework and played outside until we had to go in for dinner.

Now I’m tired, and my eyes are getting heavy, so I'm going to go to bed now.

School was actually fun today! We started a new art project. I’m painting the gardens at the palace. My teacher said my sketch looked “very imaginative,” which made me feel all warm inside. I think I might add butterflies to it tomorrow.

When Arthur and I got home, we did our homework and played outside until we had to go in for dinner.

Now I’m tired, and my eyes are getting heavy, so I'm going to go to bed now.
