Rant 072.

NEVER ask an admin "when will there be a new skin?"  DON'T FUCKING DO IT.  It's incredibly rude, even if you don't think it is.  Why?  Because it mainly implies that you're sick of the current one (which is offensive because skins take time and effort and therefore shouldn't need to be switched every time someone breathes).  And it also implies that you think the admin's not doing anything else with their time and therefore can just whip up a new one because you fucking want it.

So don't ask.  ESPECIALLY if you're barely active as it is.

Rant 071.

I'm really not a big fan of cboxes on sites.  I like how easy it is to quickly answer guest questions, but otherwise I don't tend to post in them.  And I especially hate seeing people gush about their ships with each other; it's so off-putting, and if I was a guest, I wouldn't want to join if it seemed people only cared about their ship and not expanding their character's relationships with other people too.

Rant 070.

I hate being pressured for skins; it makes me want to skin less.  And I don't believe it has any effect on gaining/keeping members.

I have no problem with a character who’s emotionally abusive or sexist or whatever. That kind of stuff can lead to all kinds of interesting RPs and relationships. However, when the player defends and justifies their character’s emotional abuse or sexist remarks, can’t understand why the behavior is socially unacceptable, and blames other characters for reacting appropriately (ie getting mad, calling them out, not wanting to be friends anymore) … NOW I have a problem!

A character is a character and I reserve the right to liking or disliking them the same as I would any piece of fiction … but when a player, a real living human being, talks like that kind of behavior is perfectly justified and acceptable, excuse me for being put off, offended, and kind of grossed out. :\

YES.  I love playing characters that have skewed morals or are just generally shitty people; as a writer, I want to be able to cover all sorts of personalities and dispositions.  But if my character is an inexcusable asshole, I will say so.  I can't defend people doing shitty things simply because I'm in love with my creation, and people who do that need to sort out their priorities.

I understand that sucks, but what if it was completely in character for the significant other to cheat?  No relationship is perfect, and sometimes things just happen IC that make sense, even if they're not the most happy options.  Figure out where your character's significant other is coming from and why the writer made that decision by /asking/ about it.  It might not just be a case of 'oh you were gone but I still wanted my char to have some loving.'

Roleplay Thought 132

Just because someone else is currently busy and unable to post doesn’t mean you should use that as an excuse not to post as well. Not everyone is busy at the same time, so if you have time and are idling away on the site, but not participating in the c-box, and not posting, you’re really not doing the site any favors. If you want the site to thrive, post when you can. If you want to bail ship, just put up a notice saying so and we’ll find someone else to play those crucial characters. 

I feel like 97% of dead sites could be avoided if people who aren’t busy would actually post something, whether it be a new post, a game, a reply they owe someone, or in the c-box.

When you have the desire to type up a post or two, but lack motivation in actually typing the damn thing. Do you know what I mean? I can see the post in my head, but typing the whole thing out just mentally wears me down, and I just want it to type itself so I can hit the post button and be done with it, because I’m not trying to procrastinate on it as much as I am. I just lack the energy to formulate proper words, and sentences, and everything in between.

People that don’t integrate themselves on a site after joining it. Whhhhy? I could kind of get it if no one was trying to plot with you, but people are, and it just boggles my mind that you’d join a site just to sit on a character and post once every blue moon, but not fully get involved with anything else on the site — like the actual site plot, site events — everything else that comes with being part of a site.

Anyway, the rant.

Sometimes I'll take a day or two to respond to a post; sometimes I'll take almost a week.  It really all depends on muse for the thread or character, or on how much time I have, or on how I feel in general that week.  So I actually get really frustrated if someone I've taken at least three days to respond to replies on the same day, mainly because then I feel more obligated to respond faster, or I feel that I'm not quick enough for them.  But I'm not about to jump over other posts I owe just to reply to them quickly, just because they replied quickly.  So then I feel like an asshole.  Circle of frustration repeats. kajsdnakjdna

Roleplay Thought 122

Admin problems:

feeling like everything you do is unappreciated

going out of your way to respond to all plotters, and getting no replies back

asking for input and getting none from your members

putting up a staff search to get much needed help on the site, and find yourself still waiting for someone to take the job almost six months later

going out of your way to respond to threads, make new ones, and posting in the ooc forums to keep the site looking active despite no one else doing the same

knowing that if you admitted it was time to cut your losses with the site your members would flame you alive

Rant 068.

I love coding, really.  I stick to simple, but I constantly like fiddling with new little templates, and sometimes I make things a bit more complex.  Skins?  I love doing those too, but they're time-consuming, and they take a lot of thought: color schemes, matching forum codes, sizes and fonts and widths.  I like having new skins on occasion, but they're even more tiring when it seems they're not appreciated by the site in general.  'Ooh pretty skin' twenty times in a row after it's first switched over is great; yes, good, I did well.  But then it's gone, and then the players seem just as uninterested as they were three days before, and then I'm just left there like... well fuck.

I see people mention how sites die when admins lose interest, that members will stick around if admins are active and interactive.  But what about when the members don't seem to care at all, even with the admins being active and promoting plotting and starting site events?  What then?  Why do some people just suck so much that they disappear even when they're included?  And what the fuck am I supposed to do as an admin who wants the site to thrive if it seems the members really don't care?  Ugh.

That awful moment when you want new characters but can't find a site that meets your needs, or when you just want to drop half of the characters you have, or just any inner conflict in general dealing with characters.
