Just like a quick opinion from a theme maker. I once took commissions and just the one problem I had was the expectation put onto me because it was a paid service. Which is 100% fine people are entitled to want something faster when they are paying for it. But I personally couldn’t cope with that pressure on my hobby and my one worry is it’s adding barriers, pressure and commercialising our hobby. Since that experience I’ve only done themes for friends and will continue to do so. I also worry that it adds a little elitism to the rpc. Because let’s face it; themes do matter. It’s ensuring that admins with the means to pay for themes stand a better chance of running a successful roleplay and that is sad when admins with talent and hard work continue to close their rps everyday because they can’t get traction. The counter argument to this being - we paid money on our theme so it shows we will put commitment in. Which hmmm I don’t know if it equals that or just shows you’re a fortunate individual with an income. And wow I just brain dumped in your inbox I am sorry.
you don't need to apologize ! i appreciate your perspective and i have the same concerns. commissions seem more equitable because they allow people who want exclusive resources to purchase them but they’re not a paywall that makes it more difficult for someone to participate in their hobby. i think that continuing with the patreon/payhip thing but just making it a point to release some free themes as well would be a good compromise, instead of going 100% paid or 100% free.
