Jane O’Sullivan, Don’t forget that we are blessed, 2009. Ink on tissue paper.
I feel like every time I see an Ugo Mulas photo it rewrites art history. And he's just sitting on thousands of them.
Cyhaus: Bela Lugosi's' Bed [greg.org] 📷: Ugo Mulas, 1969/70, the bedroom in Cy Twombly & Tatiana Franchetti's apartment at via di Monserrato in Rome, with one of Warhol's first screenprint works, The Kiss (Bela Lugosi), hanging over the velvet & fur-covered bed
One of Greg Allen’s best genres of art writing is "look carefully at photographs for evidence." Perhaps the peak example of this is his discovery a few years ago of "Erased deKooning Drawing" (one of the great artworks of the 20th century) in the background of a photo of Rauschenberg, which is commonly seen horizontally flipped (whether by accident of printing the negative backwards or someone flipping a jpeg early in its web flotsam history). While it's an "erased" drawing, Greg lined up the eraser rub marks.
It's a shame there's not an entire Ugo Mulas archive online and his most well-known book, New York: The New Art Scene, is $300-1500. Luckily the miracle of the Internet Archive means with an account you can check out a scan and flip through for free.
This is both a great document of art history and a great photobook. There's so much access and good stuff in this book, difficult to know where to start. Two-page spread of Barnett Newman and his wife Annalee!

The Rauschenberg and Warhol studio photos are probably most reproduced, but also check out Bontecou. There's also a day spent with Duchamp.
