     There was such trust in Sotha Sil as he wrapped his arms about the other man, pressing against him in an almost childish plea for affection. In his time since his first meeting with Nerevar he had grown tall as a young tree, yet he nestled against the man he had come to call family. He lacked the smell of oil and metal, a breath of fresh air in its own way.      A soft huff of laughter left Sotha Sil as he pressed his nose against waves of white hair, closing his eyes as he cherished the warmth and safety his friend provided for him.

       nerevar’s smile only further grows, crossing his arm to reach back & hold seht’s mechanical hand. there was still a long battle ahead of them- still the furious army of nords to fend out of dwemereth (soon to be renamed resdaynia). but all that drifts away from indoril, leaving him only with seht’s warmth & the beautiful glow of azura’s great dawn all around them. he gives seht’s hand a little squeeze & laughs. 

       " nonesense! no such thing as being too stealthy! “   he says, his voice getting that familiar tone of the strategic warhero.  " though, perhaps vehk might teach you some more manners! i could have hit you, you do realize? " nerevar teases; very much glad to see seht’s strength returned. he hates to think of him only as that sobbing, quivering thing left in a collapsed shrine of azura. this is a far better way to see him-- laughing, formidable, without a care. 

           nerevar shifts so that they are side by side, still cuddling, still with their backs pressed against some great tree. the sun unfurls on the horizon, and nerevar closes his eyes for a moment, whispering a quiet thank you to his god. sotha sil is going to make it. nerevar is sure of that now.

          “ speaking of, i know we have that meeting today, but...” nerevar’s voice trails off. “ what if we played hooky? just wandered around, you and me, seeing what trouble we can get into? ” he smirks in that irritatingly self-confident way. “ been too long since we spent time together, just you and i. ”

               IF HE WAS TO BE HORTATOR ,     he  must  be  perceived  other  than  the  out-lander  he  is .    where  only  a  mercenary  protecting  a  traveling  caravan  of  merchants  two  months  ago ,   he  now  finds  himself  launching  a  successful  war  campaign  against  nordic  invaders —    &   with  that  must  come  an  air  of  intelligence  about  him .    voryn  is  the  only  person  he  lets  that  air  dissipate  around —    he  lets  go  of  dead ,  scaly  skin    &    displays  proudly  the  forgotten  indoril .   here  he  is  allowed  to  be  clueless ,   here  he  is  allowed  to  ask  questions .

          finding  his  body  naturally  gravitating  towards  voryn ,   he  shifts  closer  to  him ,   gaze  spilling  over  the  same  book .     he  lifts  a  finger  to  a  word   ,   feeling  the  rough  papyrus  against  his  skin ,   &    squints  as  if  that  ever  helped .

         ‘    how  do  you  say  this ?   ‘    he  asks ,    as  he  so  often  does ,   shame  pricking  at  his  tone .    one  day ,   he  wants  to  simply  get  through  a  book  with  voryn ,   not  being  plagued  by  his  own  ignorance .

nerevar  remembers  his  death  three  different  ways :

they  all  start  out  with  dumac  grievously  wounding  him .    unable  to  even  walk ,    he  is  carried  to  the  base  of  red  mountain ,   where  he  consults  with  his  council  about  the  disappearance  of  the  dwemmer    &    what  to  do  with  the  tools .    he  agrees  with  voryn’s  initial  declaration  of  needing  to  burn  the  tools ,   but  his  council  says  otherwise ,   so  nerevar  decides  they  should  be  locked  away .   he  makes  them  swear  to  never  use  the  tools  for  their  own  benefits .     from  there  the  timelines  diverge :

1 .    nerevar  dies  in  the  presence  of  the  council  from  his  wounds  acquired  in  the  battle .   he  does  not  know  the  madness  of  his  friend  voryn ,    &    dies  feeling  an  uneasy  sort  of  peace  in  the  presence  of  his  closest  companions .

2 .   they  manage  to  go  to  red  mountain ,   where  he  faces  voryn ,  now  corrupted  by  the  tools ‘   power .    he  manages  to  kill  voryn ,   but  is  fatally  wounded  in  the  process .   he  dies  next  to  the  fresh  corpse  of  his  most  beloved  friend .

3 .   dagoth  is  defeated ,    but  the  council  too  has  grown  intoxicated  by  the  power  of  the  tools .   nerevar ,   still  barely  clinging  to  life ,   gathers  the  tools    &    prepares  to  seal  them  away  in  the  dwemmer  city ,  now  abandoned .   as  he  does  so ,   a  spear  is  driven  through  his  back ,    &   he  dies  knowing  he  has  lost  all  those  he  had  loved  to  the  heart .

morrowind  leaves  many things  open  to  interpretation ,   how  nerevar  died  being  one  of  them .    personally ,   i  think  all  three  are  true ,  in  that  when  the  tribunal  used  the  tools ,    they  caused  a  time - wound  surrounding  the  events  of  their  ascension .

𝐆𝐄𝐙𝐄𝐋𝐋𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐄𝐈𝐈𝐃 /  𝑺𝑶𝑻𝑯𝑨 𝑺𝑰𝑳 :

     Quick the young mer had been to escape from the celebration within, tired of the spired like fingers that would rest upon his shoulder as many a man much older congratulated him with envy green in his eyes. Stumbling out into the light, eyes squeezed shut as one hand fumbled for his darkened glasses while the other held a glass of Shien. It took a moment before the inky lenses covered his eyes, allowing him to see the brightness of the day with only a slight wince. Seeing Nerevar, he hurried to his side; desperate for the company of a friend.       Sotha Sil’s skin did not hold the same golden sheen, instead pale as if he were little more than a spirit. His gaze did not meet the other’s eyes, his smile not entirely returned; the young sorcerer not able to shake the weight of dread that had fallen upon his shoulders with their victory. To and fro went the glass, his gaze trapped in it, voice so soft and small,

     ❝ What will happen to us; your council? ❞ 

            ‘  I IMAGINE WE’LL TRAVEL ,  ‘    nerevar  says ,   voice  goldening  the  air  around  him .    a  light  smile  plays  at  his  lips ,   warm ,    hoping  to  coax  a  genuine  look  of  happiness  out  of  sotha  sil .    ‘  tour  the  mainland ,   meeting  all  chimer    &    hearing  their  woes .   ‘    he  is  not  blind  to  the  anxiety  laced  in  that  quiet  voice  of  his  friend ,    the  sickly  pale  skin  contrasting  his  proud  golden .    nerevar  will  never  do  anything  to  desert  him ,    to  put  him  in  harm’s  way .   he  is  a  strategist   &   a  warrior ,   of  course ,   but  his  most  cherished  title  is  protector .

          ‘    the  start  of  peace  does  not  mean  our  friendship  is  over ,    nor  does  it  mean  the  chimer  wish  no  longer  for  guidance .  ‘    he  looks  out  to  the  sweeping  hills  of  resdayn .   how  he  pities  those  who  only  imagine  his  homeland  as  ash  or  dying  trees ---    how  he  wishes  to  change  that  perception .   ‘  you  will  always  be  dear  to  me ,  ‘  he  says ,   so  foolishly  blind  to  how  deeply  the  foundations  of  their  friendship  will  crumble .
