Dear Rogue Trader and associates,

What is a Gift Exchange?

The Rogue Trader Gift Exchange is a curated event within the community, created by Jaal, which now enters its sixth cycle. What began as a simple exchange of creative gifts between fans has grown into a community-wide ritual—equal parts celebration and experiment. Participants are paired together by Jaal and remain anonymous to each other until the Gift Exchange Reveal. Participants are tasked with crafting something inspired by the other’s preferences: art and fiction alike. Over the editions, the Exchange has evolved into something larger—a shared narrative event where the act of giving is as much about world-building and storytelling as it is about the gift itself. Each round brings new creators, and new opportunities to forge a community built on respect for creativity in all shapes, and sizes.

TLDR; What can I expect?

To create and receive a piece of art or fiction based on your preferences, and set in the Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader universe, aligned with the respective theme. To have the oppurtunity to be rewarded for participating; several physical and digital gifts are drawn at the end of an exchange. To be apart of the exclusive viewing of the series, A Rogue Traders Tale, before it is released on Youtube. A series where the VA's reprieve their roles from Rogue Trader, and engage in a fan-made mini-series. To have your piece of art or fiction be showcased in a cinematic movie at the reveal. To be assured that no matter what level of creative measure you believe yourself to be; the true art comes from being apart of something more, if even just for a moment. To have your wildest dreams come true. All tropes and ships are accounted for and matched up respectively to ensure your gift is of a standard you would adore. It is a requirement that to partake in the Exchange, you must be a member of the Rogue Trader Gift Exchange discord.

ROGUE TRADER GIFT EXCHANGE VI FEATURED ARTIST #3 | THATZOMBIECAT

PICTURED (LEFT): Lady Avida von Valancius, heir and scion of the von Valancius dynasty, overlooking her Magnae Accessio. Her features, usually composed beneath the burden of warrant and dynasty, are here captured with unmistakable yearning for her Seneschal, a man she not only respects, but understands in ways few others could. Before the night’s end, Avida would gather what courage she could and seek him out, hoping to ask for a single dance.

PICTURED (RIGHT): Markus Vane, age 27, Forge World Metalica. Rendered here as an artistic reconstruction, the image depicts the charged symbolism of his relationship with Kassard Oranox—a bond that would become a marriage of matched will, shared power, and unflinching honesty. Some accounts frame their devotion as possession, others as obsession, yet all agree upon one truth: it was so equal, so fiercely returned, that no eye could name who held whom. Thirteen years on, rumour maintains that Kassard Oranox’s heart remains most faithfully bound to Markus Vane.

Thatzombiecat is an artist whose style is so singular and exhilarating that it could be recognised at a glance. There is a distinct energy to their work, the kind that immediately pulls you in and makes each character feel vivid, expressive, and unmistakably alive. Their joy in drawing characters and breathing life into them does not simply meet expectation, but exceeds it entirely, revealing itself in the finest details of every work. From expression to posture to the smallest visual flourishes, thatzombiecat creates with a sense of care and enthusiasm that makes their art feel wonderfully personal and full of heart. Though Avida’s design already carries a striking sense of grandeur, it is in thatzombiecat’s hands that she becomes something more than simply beautiful; she becomes memorable and deeply human. The same could be said for the rendition of Markus Vane, how so much feeling rests in the smallest details. Firstly, the eyes, how they carry a depth that immediately draws you in, so full of confidence and loyalty. Then there is that playful smirk which gives the artwork its personality, hinting at a man who knows exactly whose heart he holds. And finally, Kassard’s hand: wrapped around his dog tags, where her name lays engraved into them, adding a beautifully intimate layer to the piece. "Seeing Markus portrayed like this was incredibly personal for me. Thatzombiecat understood that his hard exterior was not his true nature—but something built from experience and the need to endure. What moves me most is how the piece captures the forbidden nature of his relationship with Kassard. There is tension in it. Where the feeling that even the smallest glance between them meant something and cost something equally. But there is also such certainty in the eyes. They knew the risk, and they chose each other anyway.” —Jaal The details, colours, and endless care all speak of an artist who loves their craft, yet loves the characters more. Avida may have gold seeping into her skin, but it is Thatzombiecat’s own heart of gold that can truly bring any character to life. Thatzombiecat will be joining us again for their third Gift Exchange in 2026.

FEATURED ARTIST #2 | KREDOUS

PICTURED: Archmagos Vyrhale Oranox addressing the Magos Council upon Forge World Metalica, 974.M41. In this moment, the Arch-Dominus opposed a petition to permit unaugmented Imperium troops oversight of the sacred fleets of the Adeptus Mechanicus. Declaring such interference an affront to Metalica’s primary doctrines and machine-sanctified values, he required a mere 234 spoken words to see the motion struck from the record.

KREDOUS | Archmagos Vyrhale Oranox

To describe Kredous simply as talented would almost feel like an understatement. Words such as talented, insightful, and generous come close, although Kredous work stands out not only for their creative ability, but for the insight and care they bring to everything they make. Kredous was given little more than a rough concept of Archmagos Dominus Vyrhale Oranox and a brief outline of his personality. Despite the image displayed only being a work in progress, it already feels strikingly complete. The level of detail, atmosphere, and characterisation present at this stage is a testament to Kredous’ skill and creative instinct. The trust placed in Kredous was insurmountable, as Vyrhale is not just another character, but a figure of real significance to Jaal and the overall Gift Exchange event. Still, when Kredous’ was considered for such a commission, it was their portfolio which had already made one thing clear: they had the skill and imagination to turn Vyrhale's concept into something real. “Watching Kredous bring Vyrhale from concept to completion has been deeply emotional for me. There is a very particular kind of pride that comes from seeing a character who means so much to you handled with such care. Every detail feels like proof that Kredous truly saw who Vyrhale was meant to be and what he represents." —Jaal Even in the stark white of his robes, Kredous allows Vyrhale’s personality to come through, creating the sort of artwork one cannot help but want to frame. Kredous cares deeply about their art, and it shows in every stroke—as though no detail is too small to matter. Kredous will be gracing the Rogue Trader Gift Exchange with their participation in 2026.

ADMECH ARRESTED FOR SUSPICIOUS BEHAVIOUR || FOOTFALL

TWO TECH PRIESTS WERE ARRESTED YESTERDAY EVENING FOR ATTEMPTING TO BREAK AND ENTER INTO ‘VLAD’S VAULT’: A STORAGE LOCKER BENEATH MARTYR’S ENDURANCE. THE TWO DENIED TO PROVIDE STATEMENTS. OFTEN REQUESTING FOR A “KASHARD’S” ASSISTANCE. AUTHORIITIES SUSPECT THIS KASHARD MAY BE A MECHANICUS LITANY, OR SUB DEITY. THE PAIR ARE BEING HELD IN REMAND UNTIL FURTHER EVIDENCE IS RECEIVED.

MEANWHILE...

Vladaym ignores the bait. The data-pad striking the tabletop with a hard, contemptuous slap from being thrown. Then, with terrible restraint: “Do get off the desk.” The wood groans once more as Kassard shifts further back. “Give me back my tech-priests.” Vladaym’s breath leaves him slowly, painfully, as if he is refusing to waste a better reaction on her. “No.” Kassard laughs at his refusal, the sound of it too entertained to be kind. [SOUND] The desk lets out a heavy groan as Kassard rises at last; a data-pad lifts in a quick scoop from the tabletop; then the hard clack of heeled boots advancing toward Vladaym. “In that case…” Kassard drives the data-pad into his chest with blunt insistence. “Read,” she growls. “Since the process matters so very much to you.”
