So just to clarify, this is not meant to be an ongoing discourse blog. I'm not here to fight with anyone, and I certainly don't want to spend all of the next however many years coming up with things to complain about. But I really feel like I need a place to vent my personal displeasure where my DW followers and RL friends don't have to be constantly spammed by it, hence, this blog. Still hoping it doesn't get a lot of use, tho the further in we get, the less likely that seems.

As far as nu!who goes, I'm more of a Moffat girlie, tho he's not without his own flaws, and no, I don't actually hate Chibs or for that matter, Davies's original run. I don't care for Ten, but nor do I despise every Ten episode. For what it's worth, I'm far more invested in my own corner of the Wilderness Years fandom than nu!who, but. y'know. If you hate Moff or Chibs you're not going to have a great time here.

Now that I've slept on it I think it's safe to say that Disney money was a deal with the damn devil. Got two seasons and a spinoff not even on Disney before contracts started piling up and driving people out while Disney refused to renew them, forcing writing changes few liked.

I don't think RTD is perfect in all this but I think you're missing the forest for the trees if you're pinning the bulk of the blame for this on him, and not on the Disney deal being left in abeyance forcing their highly charismatic Doctor to leave earlier than intended.

The older I get the more I go ‘while undeniably a flawed white man, Moffat isn’t a misogynistic person inherently he’s a feminist with blind spots who made efforts to improve and acknowledges his flaws and fixes them while lowkey RTD absolutely is kind of misogynistic but got away with it because we were all children because what do you mean Martha, Donna AND Belinda all got hit with tropes that make me uncomfortable (Martha with the racism, Belinda with the essentialism of being a mother against her will and Donna with ageism). He seems to only really care for his blonde nineteen year old companions and even Ruby got disrespected by the end by Fifteen and spent emotional labor trying to make her awful ex a good person. Meanwhile Moffat’s worst sin is some raunchy skirt jokes (the worst not being him) and a legitimately bad scene between Amy and Eleven he apologized for ages ago. Amy, Clara, River, Missy and Bill get a bad rap but I think they’re all really well realized and inherently feminist stories. Amy in particular is underrated to me, a neurodivergent woman who sees myself in her.’

literally that's the biggest problem for me - the fact that rtd's writing has just stayed so Stagnant? i could talk about my poor bel forever but the main thing is that the way she was treated was so distressingly similar to martha's treatment speaks VOLUMES imo. these two characters were written nearly 20 years apart. any good writer would pick up on how they've upset their audience and try and rectify that going forward... but the issues between rtd1 and rtd2 are practically completely the same. his writing and his values have not changed whatsoever, and if they have it is not apparent to me at all...

amy, clara, river, missy, bill... i feel a lot of people's judgement of their stories is based on the fact that moffat's writing seems misogynistic, therefore the female characters he's written Must Be Bad! and like. i'm not here to sing anyone's praises all i know about this show's writing is what i've experienced myself... but!!! moffat's female characters for the most part are not as terrible as a lot of people seem to think!!! my biggest personal ick with the show is the eleven and amy scene you mentioned it really turned me off amy as a character... but! if moffat has apologised for it then at least that's a step in the right direction?? (also!! if you'd happen to have a source for that would you mind sending that over?? i hadn't actually heard that moffat had spoken about it...)

Agreed, I love Moffat's female characters in doctor who and I definitely think people exaggerate how misogynistic the writing is. Also, here's a source:

Like, the segregation conversation was not only an opportunity to give PoC fans a chance to feel that “this shit sucks and we see you, and you can do and be anything no matter what” feeling that DW is great at giving to everyone else. But like. It would also have been really good addition to plot and character building?

Belinda’s ENTIRE THING with Fifteen in the first episode is “oh my god you are dangerous I fucking hate it here”. How fucking COMPELLING would it be to follow that up with her getting swept into the novelty&excitement of time travel the same way other companions are before sharply being hit by yet another way that excitement and whimsy puts people in danger. “oh my god I was so swept up in the clothes and the time travel I didn’t even think about it? why is THIS the first place you brought me do you not realise how dangerous this is??? Do you not understand the reality of looking like us here and now? WHY is this not a problem to you oh my god you aren’t just dangerous you’re stupid???”

And having that shit hang over them all episode? The distrust? The fear of having “racist society” hanging over you ON TOP of all the weird alien/god shit??? Belinda realising that despite currently being a black man the Doctor seems to have little to no lived experience of being a human of colour, he’s as much a danger to himself as he is to her (Again, it would have been GREAT if Belinda had been the one to come to the “being here is illegal” realisation on her own rather than being told as if she isn’t someone who would know this shit)

Even just making the sequence in the cinema with the cop be REAL would have been better!!! Maybe the “save it for later” line could have come back and Belinda could fucking snap like “IS NOW LATER, DOCTOR??? ARE WE TOO BUSY TO WORRY ABOUT IT NOW???”. Then that would also be a great follow up to Dot and Bubble’s conflict at the end, where the Doctor is finally realising how much harder his life has become now that he looks the way he does, and this time he could take Decisive Action to protect himself and Belinda rather than passively letting racist shit happen. And then fucking APOLOGISE TO HER FOR SHUTTING HER DOWN.

Idk there’s just so many missed opportunities in everything RTD writes rn. He pays lip service to difficult topics and proper character moments and then spends the rest of the episode with his dick in his hands and it’s so fucking frustrating

came back and was hyped by everyone and then wrote crap episodes

completely screwed over Ncuti Gatwa

brought back Billie Piper, an interesting choice considering he doesn’t and probably never knew where the show was going and obviously had little to no plans at all for when she was actually back to justify it

confirmed a Christmas special everyone was waiting and watching for and then cancelled it without ever even bothering to try actually writing a script

only ever confirmed a Christmas special in the first place to let fans know there would be more Doctor Who coming despite it “going on tender” and probably wouldn’t be back for years, giving fans false hope (“welcome back wilderness era,” we all say completely dejected and monotone because WHO THE HELL WANTS THE WILDERNESS ERA BACK)

leaves the show in an even bigger mess than how he found it.

I’m so glad this guy is gone get a new showrunner and give me my comfort show back as soon as physically possible, with all due respect I’m not waiting 16 years for new content (I love, respect and salute the whovians who waited through the original wilderness era but lets be real no one wants to do that again)

At some point, RTD stopped being a Doctor Who fan and became the kind of person who looks down on Doctor Who fans — and nowhere was that more apparent than in his writing over the past couple of series.
