“HEY! QUIT IT!!!” his size most often the thing picked on by the pirate captain he looked up to and wanted to be like. Luffy hated it, pouting and showing how annoyed it made him feel while looking away. They had been through this before, hardly a new occurrence between them especially after the transition. Impulsively cutting long hair short again to later be fixed by Makino with the demand to not be called Lucy anymore in the end only led to moments like these. In vain hands would try to budge the arm resting on his crown before frustration ended with an attempt to slip away.

Imagine Luffy trying to just copy shanks and the rest of the pirate adults, in order to prove himself an adult. (deepening his voice, puffing his chest, saying things he hears them saying whilst not understanding it.)

Honestly, it’s canon from the aspect of wanting to be seen as someone holding his own to be taken out to sea. It was just his part of trying to be taken seriously because of that desire coupled with Shanks being the closest thing to a dad figure in his life and not wanting that separation. He’d understand a majority of it, even to the rest of the crew’s surprise because they thought Luffy didn’t get what they were talking about, but he comments on it either then or later.

I’ve never gone into it till now, but Luffy eating all the time does have a lot to do with him having ADHD. Aside from it coming from one of the few things he absorbed thanks to Garp, and going well with aiding himself with how his devil fruit works; it’s for pleasure. It feels good and is stimulating for him to just eat and be able to taste things.

Not to mention Luffy is prone to head-bashing, it was a more prominent thing when he was younger, but in times of stress and anger, he does it because it feels good when the overload hits. (It’s not just a headcanon completely either considering how often it’s happened in events like Sabaody where it’s easy to tell he’s breaking/overwhelmed emotionally). Luffy might not be all that connected with physical pain, but internal pains have always been a lot to handle.

When it comes to the last point, it’s why you can easily find Luffy resting his head against anything on the ship that’s a solid wall (or floor) with the rocking of the waves because it feels incredibly pleasant. It’s why he only gets 4-5 hours of sleep or less, he takes forever to get to a place of being truly calm and ready to shut off for that time. In day to day events when things aren’t all-consuming him, his hands can’t stay still, fingers always moving; running over the railing, reaching for his hat and playing around with it. If there was a fidget spinner in OP it would be found almost constantly on Luffy’s fingers; moving and centering him while he enjoys the feeling.

A similar story played out once again despite the standard already being set years ago. It was hard not to sigh when he had made it obvious time and time again he’d do anything to keep his crew free, alive, and by his side. After this detour was said and done he hoped that nothing like this would happen again. Nami, Robin, Sanji — at the last name it felt a little silly that they had to do this and after it — well, it wouldn’t be treated the same anymore. The next in line would get some sense knocked into them in a less passive way, a line in the sand to be made.

The question was raised after saying it a bit ago with only a little time between then and now. Jack’s second attack was a hiccup in their plans, but now Luffy could nod on the course of action, they would be leaving now. “Yeah, if all goes well I’ll have Sanji back so we can be whole again, there’s no way I’m leaving without him.”

It was calm between them, more somber than it had been when Zoro was leaning back against the bench. He knew the swordsman got it even if his previous words after Sanji left said otherwise, just like he expected from past behavior that was two-sided. “Hopefully this will be the last time of an involuntary leave, and nothing bad happens on either country.” There would never be a guarantee, just the usual gamble with luck and more precaution taken between the two groups.
