Update: So the hotel we wanted to go into told us there is a 72 hour waiting this weekend for some reason even though we made a reservation. So we have to wait for three days to go back in it (it's the cheapest one) so we are stranded outside again and none of the other hotels are cheap this weekend. I'm so devastated and tired what the hell do you mean we have to wait 72 hours to get back in.....

just wanted to say, unlike other sites, you can edit posts here. so if you forgot/struggle to add alt text to your images, but someone in a reblog writes the id for you, you can add it in to the original post! unfortunately it won't show up in any old reblog chains, but at least fresh ones will have it. it is so much easier for people who need it to just click through to the original instead of searching through the notes.

i suppose this is also good place to let people know that you can add alt text to images. so many dont know that still. here's how do to it.

wait, people also don't often know what alt text is and what its for in first place! basically its a description of a visual component on a website. the alt text will display in that visual's place if it doesn't properly load. nowadays its also displayed beside images as a caption too. thats what the little alt symbol in corner of images you may have seen indicates.

more importantly, alt text is vital accessibility for visually impaired users as it can be read out by screen-readers or other text-to-speech tools. without it images will just be read out as “image” which of course isn't helpful at all.

When Amal surprised me by telling me she named her newborn after me, I felt like part of my heart had gone to Gaza and remained there ever since.

This part of my heart is now breaking. Amal, who's been on a poor diet because she can't afford better food, is unable to breastfeed baby Mina any longer, and is unable to afford enough formula to compensate, and now both mother and baby are weak and malnourished.

Amal is suffocating from the stress of having to provide for her daughters. Her husband Motasem is doing everything he can (recently, he was almost caught in a bombing while trying to get food) but they're both overwhelmed. I wish there was anything I can do for them.

I'm begging you to donate if you can and share if you can't. I want, more than anything in this world, for these kids to grow up healthy and for their parents to be able to rest.

Graced by Geckolepis typica from Madagascar. I love that they’re quite round creatures and then they have these dainty little toes. Also, their scales are full bone and both scale and skin come off when they get grabbed, which is…unpleasant. Consequently, catching these geckos for research without damaging them requires special techniques. 19th century researchers used bundles of cotton wool, but I imagine this wasn’t very effective, because cotton still has a lot of friction and the friction would pull the skin and scales off. In my (quite extensive) experience, the best technique is to carefully and quickly flick the geckos from their tree trunk or branch into an open dry plastic bag using a finger or stick.

Not only do they grow back, but they come back so well that we cannot even tell where they have ripped off before. This is very weird, because when a lizard loses its tail, it is very obvious where it has been lost and regrown. Not so these chaps. They seek out a humid place to hide, and within a few weeks, skin and scales have started to regrow. The fact that they can do this so well is the reason a team has just sequenced their genome. I believe it is hoped that the skin regeneration tech they have built into their cells could eventually be harnessed for human skin grafts.
