Jonathan Byers Headcanons that are nonsensical and self-indulgent because I love him and he deserves fun headcanons.

-I don't think he's a big sweets person but if he had to pick an ice cream flavor it would be Mint Chocolate Chip.

-adding onto that Jonathan prefers savory treats and fruits as opposed to pastries and sweets.

-this is more self-indulgent but Jonathan is disabled. He has chronic aches in his back and legs, with his legs being prone to cramping or aching after staying in a crouched or bent position for long periods of time. One leg is stronger than the other, and the weaker leg is prone to spasms from time to time.

-Jonathan knows how to sew. I imagine as he aged Jonathan improved on the skill to (in his eyes) lift the burdan of mending his clothes off of Joyce. sometimes. I can't get him sewing out of my head.

-Jonathan is not the strongest singer, but he does enjoy humming along to a track.

-He reads to me as someone with a clear internal voice?? if that makes sense??? Like he can envision most things in his head and clearly voices his thoughts in his head as well.

self-indulgent headcanons additional notes under the cut:

- Ray has a scar on his temple where he was struck with the butt of a carbine instead of shot to force him onto his knees (since the Major was going to personally execute him it'd be pretty bad form for one of the other soldiers to accidentally kill him first). This gave Pete time to step in and save him using his winner's wish, but he still feels guilty about it. Ray points out that they "match" now in an attempt to make light of it, but he secretly feels responsible for Pete's guilt, because he was intending to sacrifice himself for him and his desire to build a better world. He'll never say as much, though. (And before you ask, yes, this is because I'm a sucker for the "character who's dead in canon has a scar in the place of the wound that would have killed them in fanart" trope).

- Since there's realistically not much of a chance for them to ever be able to get married or purchase and exchange rings without scrutiny as now-(in)famous members of a fascist militaristic state that's willing to send 50-100 or more of its young people to their deaths each year and shoot you for resisting, they exchanged dog tags instead as a symbolic representation of their commitment to each other. This also acts as a reminder that they made it out together.

- There's no way that their bodies wouldn't be fucked up by six days of walking with no rest under intensely stressful conditions (especially Ray; considering that he was walking without shoes for the last hundred miles or so he's lucky to still have any feet left at all) so I see no reason why they couldn't invest some of their prize money in medical aids to help cope with the chronic pain and long-term injuries they'd be left with. They'd definitely be hesitant to do so at first due to the internalised social stigma against admitting you need help or depending on others (particularly as a result of a walk-or-die contest based on a mythologised ideal of masculine endurance and strength) but Pete eventually gets sick of watching Ray limp around trying to grit his teeth and bear it, and when he insists they get him some help Ray responds by pointing out what a hypocrite he's being. It's their first proper argument, and they exchange some ugly words expressing frustration with each other's self-sacrificial tendencies and insecurities that they've been harbouring about the other only putting up with them out of a sense of obligation now that the walk is over, but by the time the day draws to a close they're desperately apologising to one another and agreeing to take each other more seriously - they're definitely an "I never want to go to bed angry with you" kind of couple (and, given that nightfall usually signalled a rise in deaths during the long walk, there's a degree of "I don't want to die without forgiving you" motivating their change of heart, too - they're going to be horribly codependent for the rest of their lives I fear).
