Honestly, this is one thing that still drives me crazy, is that Husk is apparently not allowed to be his own character outside of his relationship with Angel Dust. Not just in canon, but also in fanon, too.
Do you know how hard it is to find literally ANYTHING about Husk that doesn't involve Huskerdust in some way? Scenes, merch, anything you can think of, all of it HAS to involve Angel Dust in some way, shape, or form. Even posts of Husk where Angel isn't even there will still be tagged as Huskerdust for some asinine reason.
Even if you have the option to buy Husk related merch by himself, you bet your ass Huskerdust will still be used for the marketing. What really bothers me about it is that treatment is never extended to Angel, especially in the show.
I've said it before and I will say it again, Angel dust has so many scenes in the show and in merch where he's allowed to exist and Husk isn't required to be there. He's allowed to be a character by himself and not tied down to Huskerdust.
After watching Season 2, my fears are becoming more and more confirmed, because so far, Husk has only TWO scenes in the show where Angel is not present, the topic of conversation, or involved in any way. His talk with Alastor in season 1, and the Love in a Bottle number in season 2. Even then, Angel was still referenced in the animation for the song, and was immediately shoved right next to Husk after the scene ended.
I don't hate Huskerdust, in fact I hope it becomes canon. Because it may just be the only explicit relationship we get between two gay men who are also main characters in animated media. My only wish is that it did not come at the cost of the character assassination of one of the characters in the ship.
...yeah. Love Angel dearly, but I've had this same thought about how in both canon and fanon, Husk is often a matched set with him, when that isn't the case with Angel.
Back when the trailer launched, I found a Reddit thread about Husk's spit take, and most of the replies were along the lines if "I bet it's because Angel walked in wearing something sexy!" I found that so tiresome - can't Husk have any sort of emotion that isn't related to Angel?
And then that ended up being canon. Genuine question, was "Losin' Streak" leaked and people thought they were being sneaky with their spoilers, or is "Husk can't go five minutes without Angel" just an accepted fact by now?
I also really don't want a big reveal of "Angel and Husk knew each other in their past all along!!!" I can see why it's a fun AU, but in canon it would feel a little too... convenient? It was necessary for Stolitz to make sense, but not HD. Of course it makes sense for Husk to be aware of Angel and have seen his movies by chance, that wouldn't bother me, but I don't want any "I was secretly a big fan before meeting you" or "you worked at my casino and I just forgot" stuff. Angel's backstory has plenty without Husk in it, so let's give Husk's backstory the same consideration.
It's just... I don't want to look like I hate Angel, or the ship, or its shippers. I've been in fandoms where even my mushy centrist stance on HD would be called out as homophobic because it's not full-speed adoration of it, and I really don't want to repeat that path again.
But all the duo merch gets annoying quick.
I propose the Irk Test for S3 - does Husk have a conversation, with someone who is not Angel, that is not about Angel in any way
Angel I love you, I want the best for you, but if Husk is so obsessed with you that he can't think of anything else when you're not even there then that is a problem, both in-universe and out
Not only am I a bit annoyed at HD because of how it's treating my favorite character, but it's also because I only just recently in the past few years got out of another fandom where the most popular ship was just awful.
Not gonna name any names because the fandom is batshit insane over it, but basically, the two characters in the ship started out pretty interesting and likeable, and they felt distinct from each other. Then suddenly the showrunners started leaning into the ship more heavily, then suddenly all those character traits disappeared and now the two are only defined by their relationship with each other. Like, I wanted the ship to become canon, I just hate how it was written. And yet, saying something like that would have you burned at the stake over it.
HD is a similar situation. The relationship is happening, and it's coming at the cost of one of the character being a distinct individual, and I highly doubt the writers are going to fix it. I'm half expecting something about Husk being a secret sponsor/admirer for angel dust or something at this point.
If we go through the entire show and not once do we get Husk's actual backstory for himself and his problems, and his problems alone, I'm gonna be so mad because they would have wasted such a good character for some arbitrary romance.
And I think we should expand on the Irk TestTM.
Is Husk speaking to someone who isn't Angel?
Is the conversation not about Angel in any way, shape, or form? Not even anything as subtle as talking about "love lives" or some shit.
Is Angel NOT present for the conversation? He's not in the background, he's not offscreen standing two feet away. He's nowhere near Husk while the conversation is happening.

Husk's first time being intimate with you, his first time feeling genuine passion for someone in so long... his face buried in your neck, his fur and his deep breaths of your scent tickling your skin as his paws roam all over you, gently tugging at your clothes, wondering if he's really allowed to have this, if you're really sure...
As you urge him on, he gives in to his hunger just a bit more. His trembling paws help you out of your shirt, and starved kisses cover your neck, shoulders, and collarbone as he tries to stop shaking long enough to get your bottoms off. A purr rumbles through his body as you touch him in turn. Your fingers brush a particularly tender spot on his lower back, and he gasps as his wings flutter. He moans louder as you keep touching him, and the thought that you actually want his pleasure nearly makes him blush.
He used to be so much smoother than this. He never had any trouble fucking his showgirls, or anyone else at the casino who caught his interest over the years.

Your fingers curl in his chest fur, and you murmur something he doesn't quite catch, but to him it doesn't matter; you're real, you're still here... he still hears your breaths, still feels your skin against his arms, you're spent and satisfied and can leave whenever you want and yet you're still here...
I hope we get to know what Husk's attitude toward sex and consent was like as an Overlord...
I refuse to believe he was ever an outright rapist. Valentino's "business" has always disgusted him, and while he enjoys quality time with escorts, he's always made sure to thoroughly investigate their pimps to make sure they actually enjoy what they do. He won't buy a night with anyone working under Valentino due to the principle of it.
But I still kinda like him treading close to the boundaries, just a little... sleeping with partners who are clearly wasted (he doesn't see the problem because he fucks while blackout drunk all the time, thinking it's normal and not a symptom of a substance use disorder)... being able to take a direct "no", but loving a good chase where his prospective partner says "maybe" and he turns up the charm/sleaze in the hopes of it turning into "yes", he's usually sure his target is knowingly playing along with his game but his track record isn't perfect... loving rough, intense sex, only keeping partners around if they can keep up with his kinks and cravings... maybe kind of knowing that some of his partners only agree to his kinks because they're getting some sort of other perk out of it, but it's not like they ever told him to stop...
All the kind of thing he was able to justify to himself at the time, where he could say he fucking hates everything Val stands for while not feeling like a hypocrite... but in retrospect he knows how fucked it all was, and it's what makes him so much more aware and adamant about active consent now.
(...but he wouldn't mind playing out some of those old power dynamics again if he's sure his partner is also into it... predator and prey, master and pet, playing with love potions... the thrill of the chase, the freedom to be as rough as he wants and not mind his claws and teeth... he does miss some of that. He just needs to be 200% sure he's not crossing some sort of line.)
