Banshee
Literal translation from Irish Gaelic ‘fairy woman’. Is a spirit of a woman whose appearance is a omen of death, banshees are said to appear to old Irish familes when one of them is close to death. A banshee can be seen washing the blood out of clothing belonging to the person who’d death is near, the banshee is believed to be the spirit of a woman who died in childbirth, and is doomed to wail at her dying relatives until the day she would have naturally died.
Traditionally, when a person died a woman would sing a lament at the funeral. These women are sometimes referred to as keeners and the best keeners would be in much demand. The lament would be sung by a fairy woman; having foresight, she would sing the lament when a family member died, even if the person had died far away and news of their death had not yet come, so that the wailing of the banshee was the first warning the household had of the death.
Banshees are frequently described as dressed in white or grey, often having long, pale hair other stories portray banshees as dressed in green, red, or black with a grey cloak.
