I love how you draw Brook and Yorki! The way you draw them reminds me alot of O10matoP s art. Have you stumbled upon them too by chance?
Hello and thank you!! That’s such a compliment! Yes I’ve seen their art, a friend of mine has shown me some of their stuff and recommended I refer to it for Brook’s proportions, which has been helpful. And I do recommend the people who like Brook to look at their work either to learn or simply to appreciate it.
I usually try to refer to the manga or any other official media where Brook and Yorki are shown, like the Treasure Cruise art, manga panels, merch, stuff like that. Those resources are usually my go-to’s for drawing them, but I don’t want to like.. emulate Oda’s style, I want to just really heavily depict it and then add stuff of my own, especially as I’ve been learning anatomy. I think O10matoP does something similar and that’s why it might’ve reminded you of their art.
I’ve always drawn Brook very close to canon so to me, it looks like a progression of skill or art style as I learn more about how to draw him and what I like. I don’t consider myself to have a real art style yet so to me it’s just experimenting. I see other people who also draw Brook that I have been inspired by and wanted to put elements of their work into my own art.
the.buggy.bee on IG (idk if they have an acc here) draws living Brook beautifully, I’d even go as far to say that it’s my favorite way his face is drawn. They really get it just right.
Another is f4_4mm also on IG, one of their scribbles of Brook was so pretty, I love that little scribble. It’s so simple but it really nails the shape of his body.
m0ckinghalcyons draws such a cute living Brook, I am always in awe over the way she draws bodies, and her rendering is so nice to look at.
badly-drawn-doflamingo (cricket.bones on IG)’s art in general is very pretty, I especially love vibrant colors. Looking at his art made me want to experiment more with them, be more bold since that’s the sort of thing I’m personally drawn to. Also his Yorki is so cuuute.
And jealousmingo on IG doesn’t draw Brook but like I said with combining Oda’s style and sort of adding to it, they do it so well and I learn a lot from them whenever I look at their stuff. I really want to be able to do what they can with Vegapunk/Kizaru but with Brook/Yorki.
Also your art too Sophie, I have looked at your stuff before and love your style!
I have a lot of Brook references, I have a folder dedicated to his fingers, so.. I really try to have a lot to pull from. I’ve also drawn realistic skulls and looked at bone structure. I’ve traced over manga panels to commit to muscle memory (though I don’t post that obviously). And for living Brook, something I do for practice is draw his face over screen caps of skeleton Brook so the features align. The past year has been me trying to improve at art for the sole purpose of drawing Brook better.
I have art from a while back too that I’d be happy to show!! Just to compare to the new stuff, since I don’t think I’ve posted any of it on tumblr.
Next one was when I was trying to draw his LA actor, Martial T. Batchamen back when the new season came out.
Then my living Brooks, first two are from November and my merbrook is from May.
And Yorki….
These are the only two decent Yorkis I’ve drawn.
The last Brook is a wip of my part for the Brook collab, so compare it to the upper right which was March, then the one on the left which was December. Like, it’s just been learning more and applying it to my Brooks. I can only hope to keep improving because I often feel dissatisfied.
But yeah that’s about it! I know you weren’t asking for all this, but it was a chance for me to go back and look at my stuff. I also just love to yap and share things. Hopefully other Brook fans will also check out the artists I mentioned too.
And again, thank you!!!
Late happy birthday to @m0ckinghalcyons !!!
I really wish it could’ve turned out better, I’ve been busy and had to make something quickly. I hope it’s okay though! And I hope you had a good birthday!!
HELLO EVERYONE I AM ALIVE!!

Ryuma and Brook; An Essay on Depression and What it Means to Thriller Bark
I’ve thought about this for a while but I realize when I bring it up with people, it’s not the consensus we all came to with; Ryuma is more than just a zombie in one of the best ways, and in a way that was somewhat removed from the anime. In a way that matters to Brook so greatly, I’d say he stands as one of the most important characters of the arc, right next to what Moriah and Hogback represent. The thing Ryuma has in common with them is his theme alone, that being the concept of horror, but not in the zombie sense. No, Ryuma is the personification of Brook’s own self doubt, depression and guilt in my eyes. I think it’s worth bringing up what this means in the overarching theme as well, because without it, it stands as a fine sentiment but together with what Moriah and his crew mean, it makes for one of the more compelling metaphors of the arc. This metaphor, or theme rather, is what is really scary in this world, what is horror? What frightens us at the end of the day, and what stands as actually scary? At first, you’d think zombies, vampires, for those are monsters, sure, but what is a real monster but man; what is scarier than fiction but reality.
Thriller Bark unveils this concept beautifully by following the main characters as they too unravel the mystery and the real terror of the island. Fictional tropes are introduced quite quickly, such as zombies and the talking skeleton which I’ll come back to in a second, but the causation and what they mean requires more digging into the castle and the humans themselves. As we follow them, more deeper seeded issues arise, one main one being Absolom as a whole.
He isn’t like the zombies which are done with enough comedy that they actually become a relief for his actions in some regard. I feel like this arc does this a lot, using comedy to balance the terror it delivers like a drip-IV; the more you think on it, the more bitter it becomes, and the more you miss Hildon and Luffy pushing zombies into the ground.
Absolom represents to me the first instance of a taste of reality. He is a realistic terror, a real life monster, something I and others born female know more than anyone. Unlike the silly distractions we are first introduced too, he stands as something real and frightening, and I will say, the anime makes almost light of this. The anime does this a lot, so much so I have over 4 pages of bullet points on changes, not slight ones either. Robin reacts differently to his assault for example, the anime not having her flinch while in the manga, she crumples while Zoro loses it. Nami’s scenes are also extended, but the discussion of the erasure of this arc and it’s insane shift in tone is for another time. In any case, he is our first example of real world monsters, and that theme does not let up.
Second is Hogback, who stands as a similar terror the more we find out about his work. He created these monsters with no care for human life, being apathetic and made ‘comedic’ to attempt to balance the implications of Cindy and everything else the man did. Defiling caskets and raising the dead is a serious thing, and you cannot tell me Cindy’s boob scars are something ignorable; Hogback is another type of the same flavor of actual horror, one that’s debatable on what it means and not one I truthfully can pin in one box such as Moriah or Absolom.
Perona is pretty straight forward, being paired with Usopp with his negativity or depression in tow. How do you defeat em? Join em, or just out do them with your sheer self deprecation and hatred… that… should be checked out. Moriah is a strange case, being both an enabler and someone who rather ignore the bullshit his crew causes due to them doing what he wants at the end of the day. He can turn a lazy blind eye entirely, and does so frequently, unless it impacts his goal, which sadly is very similar to some people I’ve met. What he stands for more to me however, other than an ignorant, irresponsible captain, is a mirror of what depression can look like. He’s a mirror to Brook, having the same backstory practically but unlike Brook, he isn’t trying to defend his dream. He gave up entirely, no longer caring for their wishes or what they ever stood for, instead feeling so bad for himself and his status that he simply recruited whomever best served him and cares for them as long as they do his dream for him, which is the opposite message of Luffy. Luffy in fact defeats him so fittingly with the entire effort of his crew, his way of leadership being a complete 180 in the form of everyone defending their own dreams along with their captain, who likewise, defends them too.
(I think it’s beyond fitting his final form is taking people’s literal souls in a sense, using others until they’re exhausted for his own dream which they don’t believe in.) Another theme of this arc, which AGAIN, I’d have to make an entire other post on, is the idea of ‘what does it take to defend a dream’ and how relying on others entirely isn't healthy, but you can’t do it yourself either. To make a dream requires defending it, and what that defense looks like and is is varied, and can sometimes fail, such as Brook’s. Yorki had a dream, one supported by his crew, but when the time came to actually defend it, and defend those men, Brook failed as captain, not ready for the loss of his sun. The sun is another thing entirely, which, for a third time here on this post, requires it’s own thing. Now onto the final thing I think worth noting before we explore Brook’s relationship; Ryuma.
Ryuma stands as a strange outlier at first, considering the others themes. He isn’t a sex pervert, he isn't rude or lazy, he isn’t depressed and in fact, is very active in pursuing Brook and whomever Moriah needs him to attack, doing his job well. He doesn’t seem to even have a dream or goal other than defeating Brook, being a shadow in a samurai’s body, but there is an underlying tone that really stood out to me while reading; what does he mean to Brook. What does a shadow MEAN? It’s in the manga, on surface and literal level, a part of your soul to some degree, being apart of you and able to be cut from the body, however on a more metaphoric scale, it’s still a representation of the darker issues that seed our flesh. When someone speaks on shadows, they usually mean darker things, the absence of light and hope cast behind us where we cannot see. This is what makes the following interactions so interesting.
Let’s before we go into the panels make one thing clear on the following thought process; try and think about what that afro means. Brook has lost everything else in his life, his lover, his crew, his captain, his promise, everything has been shattered yet the hope of Laboon and the final words of Yorki have stirred this zombie to rise and continue on; the rumbar’s memento mori. That afro is everything from being the only thing that Laboon could remember to his hope incarnate, so for my sake, let’s everytime we go over that word, picture it meaning hope as well.
The theme prevalent is the fact Ryuma seemingly has autonomy, and something much greater than just the other zombie’s willpower to take Brook down. That vendetta is deep enough to want to remove Brook’s afro, taking it as a trophy, sure, but why would a zombie need that? It’s so personal, such an offense and violent act at that; to want to cut someone's hope from their very head, the only thing keeping Brook going… it’s interesting to me for sure. It’s not Ryuma’s actions, it’s not how samurai act, so who’s left on the table in that body but the soul, it’s own self sabotage wishing to ruin it’s decrepit old master?
Seeing as well that Brook consistently loses to him as well. I don’t think it’s just about Ryuma as a strength class samurai either, simply overpowering Brook by muscle alone, for it’s also speed Brook excels in, which he too loses. Brook loses against his own attack, something he’s known for decades and AGAIN, we could easily brush this off but the dialog and the framing compel me to say it means more than simply losing to a strong zombie. Brook I believe is losing to his own self split into another body, depression and self loathing incarnate.
Ryuma berates Brook, mocks him and belittles him any chance he can get. That’s not how a samurai talks, but we know Brook already has very little value in himself. (I’ve covered this in other essays and such, it’s fascinating really but very sad. He dreams of murdering his crew due to this guilt of failure.) Brook as well tries to fight back, defending himself in very interesting wording, sounding more like a Jackal and Hyde situation than two men separate of body– WHICH they aren’t.
Brook is literally fighting his shadow, his very soul, and the fact it continues to speak so poorly of him is depressing in its own right.
Brook loses in the end, giving up in a way we’ve not seen but should be expected of him. Exhausted and loosing to his own fight, he almost allows himself to be scalped, lamenting as the image shows, in an apology letter to everyone around him, than further stapling how sad his life has become. It could be read as something else, something I myself have once written and crumpled up thankfully, but that’s just speculation. As someone who’s battled depression, it speaks volumes how Brook isolates himself and refuses to ask for help, being another great example of his relation to Moriah and Luffy as types of captainship.
Brook never wants to be a burden or let people down, hating himself to such degrees and being so stubborn as to think he can tackle this great monster alone. It’s a monster that grows in power every time Brook faces it, getting meaner and more disattached as its own confident beast than part of his own soul. If you too have suffered from depression, you know how real this description really is, and the big thing is is learning to ask for help sometimes, which in the end, he can’t do without intervention. Franky comes in, rushing to his side to cradle him and hold him close. All the crew admit earlier that they cared for Brook and wanted to help him best they could, some crying, some smiling, but all love for the man they just met.
It’s love Brook cannot feel about himself, too busy battling this shadow that wishes to do nothing more than snuff out the little light he has left, breaking him down physically and mentally until he’s just a heap in Franky’s arms, one that whimpers finally “Please, get me my autonomy back. Get me my shadow, please.”
The message of Brook finally learning to ask for help, accepting this aid and being able to return to his, although lacking confidence, self, is one that really cemented this arc to me as one of the more important, impactful ones, one that is sadly brushed aside for more pressing or bigger issues to some people, and one the anime completely butchered. (Don’t even get me started on that.)
In the end, Brook accepts to join once his shadow has been returned and once he learns he can actually turn his life for the better, gaining a purpose alongside his already set promise.
With all of this in mind, the moment Brook looks to the sun and declares his love for life, and his excitement that he indeed did make it through the night he had suffered alone for so many years, really does mean a lot, doesn’t it? I have a lot of other thoughts about Thriller Bark but these parts mean maybe the most to me. Along with the other mentionings of thematic readings, such as the sun’s stance in this arc along with Moriah’s mirror to the crew, it makes the entire piece something so special to me.
As someone who’s suffered mental illness, learning to reach out to friends and learning I too can offer more than just old promises to myself to ‘stay alive for their sake’ is beyond important, and has really made my life better. I’m so happy to be alive, and I am glad he is too.

Mermaid Au Yorki Guide
I call this a “guide” because I’m going to include a lot of lemon shark information in one place to refer to with the mermaid au in mind, since Yorki is a lemon shark.
There are more posts with shark Yorki, including his ref I guess? Though I’d consider it outdated now. I’ll remake it after I make the other rumbars’.
I’ll yap about sharks in a bit, this is just for if anyone might want to draw or know more about how Yorki looks as a lemon shark. I’m not great at organizing my thoughts so bear with me if I’m all over the place with information.
- First thing I want to say, pay close attention to the fins. Their placement, their shape, their size. Lemon sharks notably have both dorsals close to the same size, which makes them unique compared to other species.
- Also, I’ve seen a lot of shark merpeople designs where the first dorsal is placed directly onto the back of the human torso, above the pectorals. Which isn’t like, bad, but for my au, the body is accurate to a lemon’s regular proportions except for the claspers and gills. The claspers (the reproductive organs), as mentioned in the picture, would just look better and make more sense located higher than normal. But I’m not drawing claspers so it doesn’t really do anything ? But they are apart of a male shark and help visually distinguish between males and females, just thought I should add that.
- Gill slits are located higher too, right where the hips and shark head merge. They would usually be right in front of the pectoral fins, this is just a design choice. It admittedly looks a little strange to me but I do like it. And remember that most sharks have five gill slits on each side of the body, they don’t have any less than that. Some species can have up to seven, but it’s never less than five.
- Regarding the Sicklefin lemons, they are native to the Indo-Pacific region. Standard lemons are native to the western Atlantic. So Yorki resides in the west near the Americas (spanning the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, down to Brazil). Both can grow to be about 10-11 ft in size (3.5 meters). And again, as mentioned, their fin shapes are one of the biggest differences between them. Standard lemons have more broad, triangular fins; Sicklefins have a noticeable curve to theirs.
- The pupils are also the same as a lemon’s, it looks similar to how Yorki’s eyes already are so it may not be very noticeable, but he does have the vertical pupils too.
I think that’s everything to note about Yorki’s appearance, now to talk about lemon sharks in general. These things can be applied to Yorki too, like behavior and such just to give an idea.
So,
Lemon sharks belong to the family Carcharhinidae, which are known as “requiem sharks.” This family features about sixty species, including other well-known sharks, both coastal and pelagic (tigers, bulls, reefs, sandbars, blues, spinners, etc). They’re migratory and viviparous, meaning they give birth to live young rather than laying eggs. And about half of all shark attacks are from members of this family, but mainly because bulls and tigers are included. Those sharks alone are already in the top three, though smaller sharks like blacktip reefs are also responsible for a lot of non-fatal bites too (they’re very cute though, blacktip reef sharks are my favorites).
Lemons eat a large variety of things, such as crustaceans, mollusks, smaller sharks, rays, seabirds, and fish (especially slow-moving species like catfish). They’re nocturnal hunters who opt for prey that’re easy to catch. They rely heavily on their sense of smell and electroreception to detect movement in dark, murky waters. They’re also known to corner schooling fish against the surface or seafloor in shallow waters, and like I mentioned in an earlier post, they’re brutal with prey. Many sharks bite off pieces of what they catch, but lemons will grab something whole and violently thrash their heads in order to tear it apart.
They are one of the most well-researched shark species because they are so social and popular to dive with. They’re very unique, having been observed with hierarchies and social norms whenever they form gatherings (a group of sharks is called a “shiver”). Which, they LOVE to gather. It’s actually really sweet, they get close to others and show favoritism, even occasionally get jealous. They’re usually what people are referring to when they describe sharks as being “water puppies,” they’re known to be affectionate even with humans. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t dangerous, they aren’t exempt from shark attacks. It’s rare and usually a defensive reaction, they’re very calm, but like… 200-300 lbs (90-180 kg) of a strong predator shouldn’t be taken lightly in any case.
Named after their distinct coloration, lemon sharks are born a very yellow color, but as they mature, they darken. They still retain a yellowish tint, though adults are usually an olive-brownish. Their underbellies are lighter, often whitish or a light yellow. Both colors aid in camouflage along the sandy nearshore areas where they often reside since they rarely venture out to deep waters.
And speaking of living in mostly coastal waters, that includes coral reefs, mangrove forests, and river mouths. They can tolerate freshwater or low-salinity areas for brief periods of time, but they don’t stay or travel far upstream. They’re not like bull sharks who have the ability to transition between the two for extended durations.
Buuut, they can do something known as “buccual pumping,” something not all sharks can do. Essentially they can force water over their gills by opening and closing their mouths, allowing them to rest on the seafloor. They switch between doing this and ram ventilation when they’re actively swimming. And ram ventilation is the forward-motion breathing where a shark swims continuously. Species like Great whites or makos rely only on ram ventilation, they can’t stay stationary. Lemons can do both. And because of this, they spend most of the day resting.
And finally, mating. Lemon shark mating behavior includes biting to secure their position since they lack hands or arms; it’s the male’s way of holding on, and these are referred to as “love bites.” Female sharks are built for this rough behavior, their skin is significantly thicker than males’ because of this. They find multiple partners each mating season for genetic diversity, meaning a single litter of pups can have multiple fathers.
The gestation period is about 12 months, and they return to the same nursery grounds in which they were born. This is called “natal philopatry.” Pups stay in these protected, shallows waters where they are also hunted by other, older lemon sharks. So about half of them make it, at least as shown in major nurseries. And that’s a litter of (typically) 4 to 18 pups.
So, with this in mind, Yorki could be seen as dangerous and very capable, but mainly friendly and easy to get along with. His curiosity gets the best of him, he’s very interested in people. And because of this, he collects a lot of what he finds humans throw into the ocean. Sometimes things of value, sometimes actual trash. There’s really no difference to him though, he just likes all of it, especially if he can get his hands on human food. Brook disagrees with this. He 1, sees it as a hoarding problem, and 2, thinks human food is awful despite refusing to try it. It’s for Yorki’s sake, not that Yorki ever really listens to those concerns. He constantly swims too close to boats and tests how close he can get. Lemons are inherently curious, it’s his nature.
But he also likes being around the crew obviously, a lemon shark in the company of a variety of fish. So resting and relaxing with music is also a fun pastime.
The rumbars don’t really wear clothes, their fashion is mostly the things they put together themselves. Maybe making something using torn nets that drift in the water, whatever they can find. On occasion, Yorki brings back human clothing for them that he scavenges in old sunken ships. It isn’t needed, in fact it creates drag in the water, but it’s something fun they do to express themselves. Even Brook has come around to this, though he usually wears salps and pearls like jewelry, sea lilies in his hair, and uses alcyonacea or crinoids like fans to dance with. I’ve also drawn him with a jellyfish hat, he wears that sometimes too. Just not a venomous jelly. I think a giant phantom jellyfish would make a really pretty hat, they’re just rare and live in the deep-sea, so..
Anyways, since they live in the ocean, they of course eat animals raw. Yorki doesn’t really have a taste for it anymore after trying human food. You just can’t flavor things in water the way you can on land. Still, he has Brook try and recreate stuff anyway.
Humans are generally receptive towards the mermaids, at least the people who live along the coast are. Sailors, fishermen, seasiders, they’re more so used to them and get along. It’s the people inland who Brook is mostly worried about. Especially when Laboon is involved.
Yorki likes sharing with anyone though, he eventually starts accompanying locals during their fishing or even saves people from drowning. Just gets along with anyone who likes company, really, and develops a taste for human alcohol. The other rumbars happily perform music close to shore so humans can listen too. As long as Yorki isn’t diving headfirst into a situation that could get him hurt, Brook doesn’t mind. He’s just afraid of losing him.
This is all I’ll add right now, there’s more but that will come later as the other rumbars are added. I hope this is useful or interesting to read through!
Posting this here too,
Dogs bark at Brook and he runs from them. It’s entirely ridiculous but Yorki ‘protects’ him anyway.
I want more fauns but I’ll focus on the mermaid au soon, I made a post about what I was going to do next and that will hopefully be (maybe) tomorrow. It’s mostly just going to be facts, I’ve been in an art block lately.
little Madaisuki, one out of a graveyard.
what happened before Binks Sake was a butchering.
I’m so glad you think so! @zhalar
Madaisuki when I read his tale broke my heart and it really stuck with me. The fact it’s his OWN swords through his head shows you absolutely how overpowered he was, and this is made even, sadly, clearer when Brook has to drag those swords made to mirror Yorki’s out of his head and lung, remembering the failure of his actions… he should’ve perhaps taught him better, or maybe he continued to say “tomorrow.”
There was no tomorrow for Madaisuki, who wanted to grow up, and be like his friends and family. And he is just one tomb in a graveyard.
How do you sleep at night, Brook? 5 hours at a time.
Hey. Brook is black. He's black. His alias is literally Soul King. His LA actor is a black man. He's unequivocally inspired by black culture, music, and styles. One of the key defining features of his character design is a massive afro--a predominantly black hair texture. He. Is. Black.
It's not "artistic interpretation" to draw him with skin the color of paper. It's racist. End of the fucking story.
I’m going to make a post soon talking more about the mermaid au, I want to especially talk about lemon sharks. It is an excuse to yap about fish, but I thought including more facts would be fun and maybe someone might learn something, who knows. I kind of want the au to not only be fun, but also sort of educational because I really love marine life and I want to share that with people.
The Mizuta post was supposed to have already been made but I couldn’t draw them for the life of me, so it might just be John next instead.
And speaking of John, I have an oc who is very close to him (VERYY close). I’ve been meaning to introduce him but suck at character refs. But yes I do have a One Piece oc, he just hasn’t been properly introduced. I don’t know when he will be, if he ever will.
Anyways these have been on my mind, I especially want more for the mermaid stuff so if you want to read fish yapping, just be on the lookout for that I guess. There will be more for the au, I PROMISE!
i think i already mentioned once that brook would cover himself in pillows and blankets to hold a baby so he's comfortable to lay on. i just thought of another thing he might do, especially if he has to hold the baby for a long time or is trying to get them to sleep.
he would take someone's phone/a small bluetooth speaker, hide it in his ribcage and play heartbeat sounds on it

HALCY
It’s actually been a full month since I’ve drawn skeleton Brook , that’s so sad
He gets his shitty little compensation crumbs and then it’s back to yorbrook
low-effort, very fun to draw
I can’t get calico cat Yorki out of my head, he lives there now.
back to the au’s I guess, if I ever decide to finish the stuff for those.
He's angy
I always have to reblog these, I want your yorkis.
Why’s the critter so mad, what for?? YOU LOOK CUTE WITH THE EARS MAN, NOTHING I CAN DO ABOUT THAT
low-effort, very fun to draw
I can’t get calico cat Yorki out of my head, he lives there now.

Lowkey throwing up and being lowkey ill over Brook and Yorki.
I have a small headcannon of like, I wouldn't say dense? But like Brook is not used to men trying to get with him? Or like he hasn't explored that part of his sexuality yet? At least when he was a younger human.
annndddd... Yorki is the overthinker in their relationship. Like he thinks he's in kinda situationship going on with Brook. He gets a little jealous when he sees the beanpole flirting/ someone flirting with beanpole.
Yorki is like fffffffuckkk holy shit I lowkey gotta get better and show off how cool and awesome I am I don't want to lose this baddie.
Like, Yorki is doing all these romantic gestures and implied sexual advances.
Then brook is just...
Yohoho I love my captain he's so cool and awesome, yohohoho.
It fucking makes me so ill I imagine them and it gets WORSE.
Walk with me here.
Yorki is fucking dying from his disease on his fuckass bed. Him and Brook are alone. He kisses him for the first time desperately trying to cling to him.
and... thats when Brook gets it.
Everything.
He fucking gets everything and this might be the last time he sees Yorki.
I drew a quick thing inspired by this. It isn’t the exact scenario but I did like the idea of Brook showing Yorki he loved him even in his most vulnerable, and what Yorki might view as “pathetic”, state.
Spending time trying to make it known to Brook how he feels but it never catches on, so he keeps trying to just do more.
But then he falls ill. And while he’s bedridden, he tries to sort of hide from Brook. He’s so ashamed of himself. One day it all just comes pouring out, either through words or through something desperate like a kiss. Years of this being pushed to the brink because Yorki is absolutely going to die and there is no more time for waiting or being careful anymore. Brook needs to know the extent of his feelings. But telling him feels so painfully vulnerable now that he’s become weakened, he hates the thought that Brook might just be disenchanted with him. Yorki was such a proud man, he regrets that only now at his lowest point is he telling Brook things he’s wanted to for years.
Nothing can come of it either. It’s only a matter of time before he succumbs to the disease. Any chance of a future they could have together is entirely gone. Years spent being indirect, and for what?
But amidst the despair, even when Brook is barely able to hold himself together over this, he admits that he has always loved Yorki too, and he always will. And they make the most of a terrible situation, something Brook has always excelled at.
Sometimes when he goes to visit Yorki, he’ll have to reassure him again. By that point his captain is so broken down that he no longer tries to act strong for Brook. The other crew members, of course, but for the last days they have together, he becomes open in a way he never has been before. And Yorki has always been a fair and honest person, but that’s usually for managing his crew. Not really for himself. But now he’s giving himself to Brook in that way. It’s incredibly painful but Brook treats it so gently.
Even like this, he admires and loves Yorki completely.
anyways, I really like your head canon for oblivious Brook and overthinker Yorki! I don’t think I’ve seen that too often, it’s very very heartbreaking!!
