2026 - Astra Helioscribe
First drop of anything of mine in relation to Hogwarts Legacy, but with being dragged into this by @cheonchi, I thought I'd share my OC, as well as maybe share the one I drew for my girlfriend too.
More info will be had for those interested down in the cut â¤ď¸
Astra Stella Helioscribe Nationality: English/Irish - Muggleborn Height: 5'0" Birthdate: July 13th 1875 House: Slytherin (Fifth Year) Wand: 9 1/2 - Ebondy - Phoenix Feather - Supple
Personality: Astra is more than a slight bit of a nervous girl, born a lot from how she had been treated in her non-wizarding classes and by her former peers. She finds much of the world around her often more than a little confusing, but at such tends to try and ask a lot of questions in hopes of understanding. Sadly, this does have a tendency to lead to her seeming like she's challenging anything and everything she comes across, or is more than a little lacking in intelligence. Much the contrary is true though, as just about anything that can be explained to her she often picks up on fairly quickly after.
As a result of this behavior of hers, and subsequent treatment by those she knew, she leans on the side of being rather withdrawn and trying her best to hide who she actually is. From her love for sketching, deep desire to explore and read about anything and everything, to her distinct preferences for women, she buries it all as much as possible. In school she was seen as the quiet girl that had nothing interesting about her, but would annoyingly ask about the homework the teacher forgot to remind people about. When brought to church, she would read the bible cover to cover, and would often question the pastor on why he was taking verses out of context, or bringing up sections that should have been considered moot by other sections.
Once you get to know her though, and she feels your a safe person to open up to, she will often yap until the sun doesn't come up. She has tons she wants to share with others, be it her favorite books, writing ideas she has, or even just wanting to know everything about you yourself. However, just about no level of accepting her will ever dispel her seemingly endless feeling of needing to prove herself worthy of even the most basic level of others tolerating her.
Background: Growing up an only child, she was the light of her parents eyes. However, living in London with her father, Joseph Helioscribe, being a Brigadier in the royal army, and her mother, Merriam Helioscribe, being a professor at the University of London, she was often overwhelmed with their need to fit in to "proper society". As early as she could be, her parents put her into an all girls school where she was to be taught proper etiquette and how to eventually be a "lady". It was actually there that she learned at a rather young age of her interest in other women, having a rather deep crush on one of her class mates that often did what she could to answer Astra's endless questions. Sadly, with her parents being devote catholics, and her hearing plenty at church and from her uncle on her dad's side about how "those types of people" would go to hell or deserve to be treated, she never opened up about such to her parents.
Her time at the all women's school only lasted a handful of years, with her eventually being expelled when she was eight. Her teachers complained every time her parents came to check in on Astra about how she never seemed to understand anything that was explained and disrupted other students with how she acted. They would point to how she was always distracted with drawing, had her nose in some book about magic and fantasy, or playing in the dirt and mud as being her acting out rather than learning. Eventually it came to the point of the head mistress of the school opted to pay the Helioscribe home a personal visit, "for the sake of privacy and keeping things civil". There she had a several hour long conversation with Astra's parents, essentially taking the long way of telling them that she was not to return, and recommending she never be placed in any other school that would teach her how to be a 'proper woman'. With both the head mistress of the all girls school, and shortly after the pastor of their church and the Sunday school Astra occasionally attended, commenting on the young girl's "constant challenging of civil ideals and culture", her parents took her out of both school and even stopped pushing her to come to church with them.
Within a few months though, they had enlisted her instead in a public school, hoping that with her fondness of reading and fascination with topics her mother taught at the university, that it might be a better fit for her. This proved mostly true, at least for a while. Sadly, her questioning absolutely everything, and now far more nervous demeanor resulted in her frequently being forced to stand at the front of the class with a lovely conical hat on top her head. She was a prime example to all the other students... in what not to be, with the word 'DUNCE' written for all to see. Any time she couldn't find a place to hide away and read or draw by herself, she was heckled and bullied by the other students, even having her large circular glasses commonly snatched from her face and crushed. For a short while, one of the other boys in her class did try to stand up for her, with even going so far as to punch one of the kids that shredded one of Astra's art pieces. However, after close to a full school year of him in turn being picked on for 'liking' her, he fell back in line with the other bullies to prove he didn't. This led to the final straw for the school, with the very boy that had tried to defend her ending up tugging at her hair and dragging her through mud to show he didn't have a crush on her, resulting in Astra flailing, and her fist landing squarely into his nose. Between the two crying their case, the school sided with the boy on the belief that Astra had punched him without provocation, and was once again expelled.
For the following years, up until she turned 15, her parents hired a tutor to teach her at home. It worked to some degree, with Merriam being able to poke her head in from time to time and answer Astra's questions and do her best to clear up her daughter's confusion. Eventually though, her tutor pushed for her mom to stop interjecting, on the claim that her doing so was making it harder to gauge Astra's progress. From then on, the young dark haired girl was left feeling like she was beating her head into a concrete wall whenever she had lessons with him. He would all but lecture her, then expect her to simply spit out a repetition of what he'd said, but with subtle variations that left her not knowing how to answer with his having not actually answered any of her question on why what he was explain was how it was. Shortly after her fifteenth birthday, her tutor pulled her parents aside to speak with them. Over hearing a bit of their conversation, she heard him mentioning how she "will never amount to anything", and "if you wish to save your daughters soul, lest she end up dying a sinning harlot in some back alley whorehouse, I recommend having her lobotomized". Not knowing what a lobotomy was, or what it meant to be lobotomized, she fished out one of her parent's dictionaries. The next hour she was left sitting on her bed starting into the middle distance after seeing the fairly graphic depiction of what one was, and the description given of how it "pacified" the patient.
Sitting on her bed though, the door to her room was knocked on, with her "Unky" George having dropped by that same day and having a letter in hand for her. The two sat and spoke for a moment or two, with him explaining that she didn't need to worry about her parents doing any such thing to her. Instead, he slowly brought her around to instead focusing on the letter he'd brought, having already discussed it with her parents. An invitation to a new school, but one that would be far more fit for her with teachers that wouldn't just answer her questions, but be eager to push her to ask even more. While her parents, as proper Catholics, didn't believe in witches, wizard, or magic, and so believed Hogwarts to be some kind of performance "magic" school, Astra was a touch more open minded. Being handed a wand by George, she felt the hum of power that came with it in her hand, and stared in wonder at the glow of light that came from the tip with his instruction to try casting the Lumos charm.
With her parents worried blessing, and George offering up a favour and needing to speak to an old friend in exchange, he introduced Astra to professor Fig. The three didn't take long to clamber into the carriage by which Astra was to be brought along to her new school, supplied already purchased and packed away. For most of the ride, she distractedly sat, staring wide eyed out the window of the cart, until her attention was caught by the odd glow on the thing being discussed by the two older gentleman. As was her nature, she asked about it... only for the other two to be more confused than anything else. Before any proper answer could be gained though, the carriage was attacked by a dragon, and Astra was left with both her arrival to Hogwarts being delayed... and watching the death of her Uncle Osric.
