The rabbi was delighted to do it, and introduced the man to some charities.  After a few weeks, the man came back to the rabbi.

You are SUPPOSED to take pleasure in making other people's lives suck less. In whatever way that manifests. It can be large or small but if you find yourself feeling good because you made someone happier, gave them an easier time of something, etc etc? You're doing it right and that's the opposite of selfishness.

Selfishness is the hoarding of pleasure, keeping it for oneself at the expense of others, not sharing it with others and thus gaining a return on one's investment.
