Surgical Specialties of Interest
As an unconventional pre-med student, I am trying to take advantage of my differences and really decide on a specialty early-ish in order to prepare greater and increase my chances of getting my top matches in terms of med school and residency.
I am very interested in plastic surgery, obgyn, dermatology and orthopedics. I am leaning extremely close to the first three, just out my personal interests. In terms of charitable works, being a part of “operationsmile” would be such a beautiful endeavor. As a women and future mother, of course I naturally can see myself as an obgyn. And as a teenager with severe acne, lets just say i have all the experience to relate to whomever I treat as a dermatologist.
Orthopedic surgery is a very difficulty and highly sought after specially and its all one of the highest paid surgical specialties. I was interesting in orthopedic surgery because of my father. My father works 80+ hours as a truck driver, and both of his knees are completely shot. He is getting ready to have surgery soon, and seeing the pain and struggle he went through, just makes me want to be the type of doctor who could have helped me.
We will revisit this once i enter medical school, but its nice to have options.
Raise your hand if you haven't done what you said you would!
I’m raising my hand. SO, lets focus on exercise for now. I have NOT followed my running routine and here is why. I deal with very intense premenstrual cramping and nausea, and i received my period a week earlier than expected. So, I will start up again, but I know, no excuse.
The other day, I sent out almost all of my post-bacc applications. Need to send out some transcripts and such, but the hard word is done. Now I’m just doing more research on the programs.
For instance, I have conflicting feelings about the harvard extension school. I have read some conflicting reviews about how great it is and also how difficult it can be and your classes will suffer from it. Do I want to take that chance and limit my chances of getting into med school? But another benefit, it is MUCH cheaper than a lot of other schools surprisingly, but on the other side of the pillow, will I be paying what i’m saving in terms of apartment rentals? It is Cambridge, Massachusetts.
All I can do, is continue researching and slapping my knee because I sent checks out already.
Things I have done and things I have not
Done: run daily, cook daily, floss daily, wash hair daily, got eyebrows done, shaved my legs...those beauty habits and milestones people. Not done: Spanish lesson, physically go to gym (not so bad), and some other stuff I can't think of. I'm doing pretty alright. I'm going to cut out the Spanish lesson and fill it with sending applications away. We will dive into Spanish in a couple weeks. Baby steps.
My new running regimen! Exciting! Scary! I’m tired already! But I’m hopeful more than anything!
On the agenda today
- Start first running routine
- Grocery shop, because momma’s gotta eat
- Mani/Pedi/Shave Legs/Wash hair: Because I’m trying to get it together
- Get eyebrows done, because momma’s a little chewbaca
- Hour of spanish lesson...30 mins? One of those.
- Cook Turkey chili
- Meet with a friend @ 5
Harvard Medical School - a girl is allowed to dream, and a girl can accomplish those dreams with hard work.
I’ve envied doctors and dreamt of being one of them for a long time. I went through college and then some, and pursued other majors like Public Relations, Music and even Nursing, because I was too afraid to believe in myself and commit to this goal. It is not an unreachable goal, and it is not even a once-in-a-lifetime goal like becoming a well-known actress. It is an achievable and very tangible goal, if you're willing to work for it.
I am more than willing to do so. i guess it took a couple of years of wising up and watering the confidence tree inside me. I can do this.
So, what’s next? Getting into a one-year post-bacc pre-med program (lot of hyphens). Because my previous degree is in PR from the University of Florida (GO, GATORS!!!!), I need to complete the normal pre-req’s necessary for most medical schools.
I’ve created a list of schools to apply to, and am just waiting on one more letter of recommendation to start the application process.
Stay tuned!
Hola
Hey, Internet!
This blog should be used as an outlet for me to share my daily trials of becoming a healthier person, a runner, and most importantly, a doctah!
I’m getting my life organized, and I think keeping up with entries will help keep me on track.
Things I need to do:
Follow a running regimen Mondays & Tuesdays
Complete my Post-Bacc applications
Floss daily...a little out of place, but good oral hygiene is a part of a healthier me!
Consume healthy portions of food
Practice spanish - Hola, como estas?
and some other stuff thats on a list. I never keep to my new years resolutions, so I kinda hope starting early will have a positive effect on me.
Also, how long does it take to make a habit? Is it 21 days or a month? IDK, but I'm giving myself two months to make these habits! PLEASE WORK!
Alright.
