Prettier version of the last post...
What is the best way to ease someone's pain and suffering? In this beautifully animated RSA Short, Dr BrenƩ Brown reminds us that we can only create a genuin...
To paraphrase the video...
EMPATHY IS
- Taking the perspective of another person AND recognizing their perspective as their truthĀ
- Recognizing emotion in another person then communicating thatĀ
- A vulnerable choiceĀ
- Feeling WITH people. The ability to get down on their level and say āI see what itās like down here, and you are not alone.āāĀ
EMPATHY IS NOT
- Sympathy
- Judgmental Ā
*Rarely is a response to someone sharing something bad with you going to make that bad situation better, whatās going to help is connecting. Say something like,Ā āI donāt even know what to say right now, Iām just so glad you told me.āā
Double standards and casual misogyny have made sexism almost invisible, yet itās still a barrier for many women and something we all need to confront
Lots of people ā including this author ā have gotten angry when they're told to check their privilege. But a lot of people also believe in these myths. Does this article change how you feel about this?
When someone youāre dating is pressuring, controlling or disrespecting you in digital, thatās not cool!
These awesome preventionists have created an app called Respect Effect where you can learn about things like communication, healthy relationships, setting boundaries, and more - all while earning points on your profile.Ā
We have started a competition between our two active SPHYR clubs to see which group can get the most points before SPHYR Summit 2018! Iāll be keeping track of their points on here if you want to keep up to speed! Ā
Coaching Boys Into Men is the only evidence-based prevention program that trains & motivates HS coaches to teach young athletes healthy relationship skills.
We want to implement this program in our local high schools! Please contact us if youāre interested or know someone who might be. There is a different program for girls teams, but this is the pilot so we have to have this to start the other.Ā
At SPHYR Summit 2017, Jenkins SPHYR club lead a workshop called The Flames of Sexism. (This is a lengthy metaphor, so stay with me).
The logs of the fire represent the systems that feed that flames of sexism, including; schools, media, home life, work, and sporting events.
The flames are the consequences of sexism, which include limited opportunities for women to succeed, societal expectations, and harmful gender roles.
So, how do we put out the flames? Why, the water of equality, of course! Rain drops added at the end of the workshop included sayings such as āHobbies are gender neutralā āThere are more than two gendersāĀ āMen can be emotionalāĀ āWomen can be toughā and more.Ā
And who are the firefighters? These awesome, inspiring, world changing, teenage activists that are working everyday to create a society where all people are equal in all ways.
(The smoke of the fire represents the consequences that men face, which also include harmful gender roles and expectations. However, you cannot be sexist towards men, the same way you cannot be racist towards white people. Standing in the smoke of the fire isnāt great, but itās a lot better than being stuck in the fire pit.)
Ever wonder why people stay in abusive relationships? Often times, itās a lot more complicated than you think. The power and control wheel illustrates the dynamics of an abusive relationship, all held together by the threat or use of physical or sexual violence.Ā
(Apologies for the use of he/she instead of they. I just started working here, and we are slowly but surely editing all of our literature so that it is inclusive to all genders, thank you for your patience).Ā
