Saw a video of a guy eating just… an entire crab WITH shell and sent it to 4 people saying it’s ryland grace core and it had me thinking

Grace is starving when he gets to Erid and for the most part, he’s domesticated. He’s not aggressive, he’s friendly with everyone, he’s enthusiastically telling Eridian science teams about human biology and explaining astrophysics concepts and whatnot. And they present him with the first sample of the me-burgers. I’m assuming the final version of me-burgers are like ground meat patties that have been cooked and then sandwiched between bread, but then the first versions of the meat would have to be like. Literal cloned human flesh. Like genuinely just a slab of muscle fiber. They want to see if it’s compatible with his physiological needs and so obviously, he eats.

They see his jaw clamp down, his teeth sink and tear it apart, the sound of the fibers individually ripping as he grinds it in his teeth. They watch as he dives in again, disregarding the juice spilling between his fingers as he brings the sample back to his open mouth. This is the first time Eridians reckon with the fact that Humans are not only animals, but apex predators. This is a species that chases prey until their bodies give out and they tear them limb from limb. He eats with a carnal hunger, disregarding everything he knows about food etiquette— human and Eridian alike. They realize that Grace’s gentleness was probably a conscious choice he had to make on the daily.

The science team decide immediately they can never give him anything resembling flesh to eat ever again. Ground meat from now on.

My method for getting around this is just phrasing whatever your question is as if you were a med student or something. Was looking for “how deep does a cut have to be in order for it to scar” for an OC lore thing and kept getting like self-harm helplines, rephrased to something like “Scarification process due to laceration of the dermis” and got what I needed

Do you think that Grace begging not to be sent was the last straw that pushed Stratt to make the call? She is an insanely powerful woman, she could find someone just as intelligent and capable in a matter of days if she wanted, all things considered. Like I know Grace was going to be shot out regardless, but part of making the choice of who to send is considering, does this person want to live? Does this person care about life, their own and others? Grace wanted desperately to live, he didn’t want to die, and that was exactly why he was sent. He knew what it felt like to want to stay. The feeling of that betrayal would drive him unconsciously to strive to prevent anyone else from being robbed of their lives by a force much greater than them. That desperation would save the world.

I've been re-visiting Project Hail Mary and all I can think of is what was going through the heads of the scientists during the final few days up to the launch?

Firstly, they would have had to grapple with the explosion. It wasn't just DuBois and Shapiro. There were 14 other scientists there. 14 of their colleges lost. They are days away from launch and have just lost so many. And they lost probably their most important astronauts. Yes, the others required but it's the science officers who are the ones expected to find the solution and save Earth. And they are both gone. There is no time.

Then they hear that there is a new option. Dr Grace. That news would cause mixed emotions for everyone. They now have a chance. But at the same time, its Grace. The human core of this project. Stratt can't be emotional, can't be overly supportive of their work but Grace can and is. He's their guy.

Imagine Dr Lamai and her crew of doctors, being told to go to their medical center. Being told that Grace has agreed but since he hasn't trained for the initial take off, they all agreed he would be induced into a coma early to make the transition to space easier. They arrive at the medical bay, expecting to see Grace there. Ready to give him their thanks for what he's doing. Instead, they find Grace already unconscious. They find armed guards around him. No one says anything but they all see the handcuffs securing him to the bed. They do a quick medical checkup. There is not much they can do to prevent any possible problems. If he has wisdom teeth or his appendix, there is no time to fix that. But they do their best. They all try to ignore the nasty bruising on his back in the shape of handprints, the dirt and blood under his fingernails. The clear signs of a fight.

Carl stands over them at all times but, they all notice, he won't look any of them in the eye. And as they induce the coma, they are all horribly aware that this is not right. That a willing participant doesn't need to be tied down. Doesn't need to be beaten. But they do what they are told, send a now comatose Grace on his way.

Later the remaining scientists gather to watch the launch. They see Yao and Ilyukhina getting ready to walk into the shuttle. They both look drawn. Haunted. Not the heroes they are. And the space beside them that should have held a third person is like a gaping wound. Because they know what is happening. But no one can stop it.

The shuttle launches, the mission begins. The remaining scientists who stayed to see this to the end watch as the Hail Mary moves further and further from Earth until she is gone. And the whispers start. One of Lamai's team talks, asks questions and it spreads like wildfire.

Dr Lokken, who everyone knew hated Grace, is the loudest voice. She wants to know the truth. Wants justice for the man who she may hate but who she respects more and who didn't deserve this.

Stratt is arrested. Its performative, they all know it. She is the scapegoat for the world. The fall guy to justify abhorrent behaviours. But in the minds of many, there is only one crime she is guilty of.

Lokken fights to get her convicted of murder. Because that's what it was. It doesn't stick but it doesn't really matter. Stratt is sentenced to life without parole. Lokken and the rest of team try to find comfort in it.

They gave the Earth a chance. They can absolve themselves of Yao and Ilyukhina's deaths. They were willing. And the life of one man is trivial compared to the world. But in the cold nights of waiting, to see if the Beetles ever return, they all have to grapple with the knowledge that Earth turned on one of their best. And they were all complicit in murder.

So imagine how horrible it would be for Rocky when some 40, 50 years have passed, and so has Grace. He went peacefully and in his sleep, his loved ones there to watch him go. They left his body there in his bed because although they understand decomposition, they don’t really know what it would look like for a fleshy being like Humans are. In the hours that pass, Grace has gone cold. His muscles have locked together, the softness Rocky used to tease him for is lost in rigor. He leaves for a while with family to make a death wreathe; a painstakingly woven crown of thread, wire, and jewelry to honor someone’s life.

When they come back to place it on Grace, they find that he is… different. His skin has started to slough and droop. He seems to almost be melting, or beginning to.

Because this is a simulated Earth and not real Earth, there wouldn’t be any of the same death-eating creatures to clear away Grace’s body unless they were to move his body out of the dome, let Erid’s creatures break him down. But that feels wrong. They could find a way to preserve him — they have read pf human practices of embalming and mummification. But that feels wrong too. Either he goes naturally, feeds into a different ecosystem than the one he was born from, or he is frozen forever and never laid to rest.

Nobody knows what to do.

His weird paraffin-wax or whatever perfused flesh sack body is definitely on display in some Mütter Museum-esque Earthling science center. Eridians come from far and wide to marvel and pay homage to him and marvel at his strange but resilient body systems.
