Unwanted Memories

Regan let out a heavy sigh, knowing her night was only going to get longer. The blonde knew she was stubborn so she understood to some degree why he wanted her to leave but he was practically making a scene, if any authority figure caught him he’d be carted off to one of their ‘government facilities’ and she wouldn’t sit and watch that happen.

“Look, I get why you might feel that way but you can’t just stay here nearly crumbling. Someone else might find you and trust me if one of those jackasses wanting to impose the registration or just lock up those that are different, you’re going to find yourself in a pretty bad situation.” She knew how that felt and to just allow someone else to go through that without doing something well…she’d rather be damned for the rest of her life.

“I’m not saying for you to tell me your whole life story, let’s just go somewhere where there’s less of a chance for you to draw the attention of some suits. I’m a mutant, trust me when I say it’s best to avoid that kind of attention.”

She mad no move towards him and chose to instead offer him a hand, showing she meant no harm.

“You don’t have to put all your faith in me but you’ve seen my face now and I’ve admitted I’m a mutant so at any point in time you could always turn me in or you can follow me to a place I know where you won’t cause a scene and you can go through…whatever you’re going through in something close to peace.”

So many words. Barnes could barely follow along with what she was saying, but he struggled to pay attention. His gaze was hazy and slightly unfocused, his mouth dry. The motors of his left arm whirred under the sleeve of his jacket, as if gearing up for a fight. She seemed harmless enough until she admitted she was a mutant. He tensed up. He’d seen talk of them on the news. Barnes knew better to take the media as gospel but he didn’t think he’d ever had contact with a mutant before. He wasn’t about to judge considering he was enhanced, himself. 

He flinched as she raised her hand to offer it. He raised himself up, leaning back heavily against the wall for support. 

“I can’t turn anybody in.” He rasped. Doing so would risk exposing himself and he wasn’t going to do that. “I’ll follow you. Don’t try anything funny.” He warned, the threat seeming weak since his voice was wavery. “I’m-- just don’t try anything.” He wasn’t going to explain how dangerous he was. She was willing to help him and he wasn’t going to look a gift horse in the mouth.

You wouldn’t believe it to look at me, but I also remember coffee rationing and yep, even cheap machine filter coffee is better than that fake-ass watery grain based crap was.

It just astounds me at all the choices and terms. I went in a place to just ask for a small coffee and I got the third degree on what blend I wanted. I didn’t want my coffee blended. Just a cup of liquid stuff.

New Dynamics

He supposed that this meeting had been a long time coming. Barnes had been avoiding meeting with Steve at first because he wasn’t sure if the kill order was completely gone from his mental conditioning. Then he’d been avoiding Steve because as memories came back, it had been very evident that who he was now and who he used to be were very different people. Barnes carried some traits and memories of Bucky but Bucky had none of the experiences or hurts that Barnes had been through. Also, Bucky hadn’t had a high-powered metal arm but that was neither here nor there.

When he was sure that he could pass as something like a regular person, Barnes had contact Steve. Just an email, asking if Steve wanted to talk. Barnes was still wary of anybody trying to tail and bag him, so he’d invited Steve over to his apartment in Brooklyn. They could talk without being monitored. He’d like to think that one day, Barnes would be less paranoid but in his heart he knew that he was probably going to be looking over his shoulder for the rest of his life.

He puttered around his place, tidying things that didn’t need to be tidied as he waited for Steve to arrive. He futzed with the coffee maker, making himself a cup and promptly forgetting about it to fret over the contents of his refrigerator, then despaired over the cold coffee and made himself another. Fuck. Why was he nervous? Memories told him that Steve was his friend, his best friend. His gut warned him that things wouldn’t be the same. They’d practically lived life times separate from one another and the dynamic was different. Barnes sipped his too-hot coffee and winced, both at the scald to his mouth and the thought of being rejected for friendship.

Barnes leaned back against the counter and sighed, tipping his head back. Hopefully this all went well.

Unwanted Memories

Regan had simply wanted to get to the damned mutant shelter unscathed and under the radar. Of course as fate would have it, a night for the blonde could never be so simple.

She had spent the night pick-pocketing, simply craving enough cash to survive the next week. She barely made enough to last her the night.

Coupled with the fact she found herself unable to ignore an anti-mutant rally or some jackass harassing some poor girl in a bar. So dispersing a protest and fending off some drunken idiot had all been reasons why this night had been utterly terrible for Regan.

She simple wanted to sleep it all off on some old, tattered cot with sheets so rough they could compete with sand paper at the shelter but her conscience had come to reer it’s head once again when she saw someone in distress. She let out a sigh, lready cursing herself for getting involved.

“Hey.” She called out, walking toward the male cautiously, her mind ready to defend herself if necessary using either of her abilities.

“You doing alright?” She knew better than to touch him and instead held her hands up in surrender, showing she wasn’t a threat.

“Should I call for help or something?” She asked, wondering if he’d even bother answering her.

He kept thinking that if he shut his eyes tightly enough, the memories might stop. They didn’t. He couldn’t stop the voices in his head, couldn’t stop some of the things they said from playing on a loop. He could see fragments of pictures, too, but none of it matched up. It was all a jumble of too much everything and it was overwhelming. He wanted to tear his own brain out.

Too wrapped up in his pain, he hadn’t sensed somebody approaching. It wasn’t until a voice louder than all the other ones broke through that he opened his eyes and gasped, lurching backwards. He fell onto his ass but scrambled back up, putting his back to the wall and throwing out his gloved left hand, as if to keep the stranger from coming closer. He could see her in the dim but his world kept flickering from black and white to technicolor.

“I’m- My head.” Barnes gritted out, trying his best to not sound like a wounded animal. It wasn’t working. “Leave me alone. Nobody can help me.” He gasped out, the flesh of his right hand finding the brick wall and scraping against it slightly in attempts to ground himself, trying to bring his complete consciousness to the present. Maybe the sensory pain blooming across his palm would anchor him to the now.

I know how you feel. In my home country, there were only two types of coffee; black or with milk. I am amazed at the amount of combinations Americans have came up with.

Are you aware of Starbucks? I attempted to go in once, but was overwhelmed by the choices.

The family-owned coffee places are better than Starbucks, anyway. You’re better off.

Unwanted Memories

Life was strange without a sense of dread. He’d grown so accustomed to it, so used to having every move he made watched or commanded. Barnes (Neither James nor Bucky nor the Soldier, not any more) was learning how to be free. Ish.

He’d found a rent-controlled apartment in Vinegar Hill, in the north of Brooklyn, and hadn’t stepped foot outside it other to frequent a nearby diner for about a week and a half. He’d set up a scope by his window and surveilled the area to make sure nobody had followed him, to make sure nobody would try and take him back to somewhere he didn’t want to go. Barnes wasn’t even really sure where he wanted to be in the first place but he certainly knew that if anybody dressed in tactical all-black showed up, he didn’t want to go with them.

So, Barnes started to adjust to living.

Once comfortable and sure that he was finally off everybody’s radar, he started to explore the neighborhoods around Vinegar Hill. He kept to himself, always wore gloves and a ball cap, but started to learn what he liked and didn’t like. On the list of likes was sitting in Brooklyn Park with a lemonade and looking across the water to watch the New York skyline at various times of the day. It gave a sense of peace to him, calming the anxious static of his mind that constantly plagued him. He began to think that maybe if he went over to the other side, he’d feel peace all throughout his entire being. Perhaps coming to stay in Brooklyn had been a bad idea. Old memories buzzed at him, wanting to break free and be known because he was always stomping around the body’s old turf. If he was somewhere that his past hadn’t touched, maybe he could feel a fresh start.

The moment that Barnes stepped foot into Lower Manhattan and turned back to see Brooklyn’s skyline from across the water, it was like a dam had burst in his head. Gasping and blinking hard against the flickers and clips of memory (data), he shoved past the crowds to try and find a safe place. A pounding started just behind his eyeballs, making them water and ache. His vision was dizzying. He could see the present but with a sepia-toned overlay of the past. He could hear a high-pitched voice in his ear, calling him Buck and begging him to see the newest displays at the Met. He pressed his hands over his ears and gasped for air, ducking into a dark alleyway and crouching low.  He squeezed his eyes shut and silently begged for the onslaught of memories to stop or even just slow down so he could make sense of them. When would they stop?

I still can't get used to a lot of things. New York has changed. People have changed. Coffee is a lot better, though.

History:

James “Bucky” Barnes was born in 1917 Brooklyn, New York. At an early age, he befriended a sickly boy named Steve Rogers. The two remained close all through adolescence and Barnes would fight off any bullies who dared pick on Rogers. Barnes was enlisted in the Army during World War II, fighting in the 107th Unit, eventually working his way up to the rank of Sergeant. He and his men were later caught in one of the worst fighting areas on the Western Front – against General Schmidt’s troops. They were defeated and captured by Schmidt. Before the unit was rescued by a serum-enhanced Rogers, Schmidt’s scientists, led by Arnim Zola, performed unknown experiments on Barnes.

Barnes was one of the first to join The Howling Commandos, a multicultural band of soldiers led by Rogers with a mission to destroy HYDRA installations in Western Europe. Barnes acted as Rogers’ second-in-command, but was thought to have fallen to his death during a mission. While he was severely injured, losing his arm in the fall, the experimental drugs he’d been injected with during his time as a prisoner of war kept him alive until he was found by Soviet soldiers. He was taken back to their leaders, given a new metal arm, brainwashed, and programmed to be the ultimate killing machine for the KGB. The Russians loaned him out at very steep prices a time or two, notably causing the 'accident’ that killed Howard and Maria Stark. When he wasn’t out on missions, Barnes – now The Winter Soldier – was utilized as a trainer and handler for the secretive Red Room Initiative, which trained young girls to be ruthless assassins loyal to Russia. 

When the USSR crumbled, the Red Room managed to maintain their organization, though they eventually ran out of the funds to both control the Winter Soldier and keep themselves in business. They sold Barnes to HYDRA, who had previously employed him to kill the Starks, and they used him to help mold 'history’ to their liking. Barnes was ordered by Alexander Pierce to assassinate then-S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury. Just before the SHIELD Civil War, Barnes was given a mission to kill Steve Rogers, who then stirred Barnes’ memories that were thought to have been wiped clean. Instead of killing his old friend, Barnes ensured Rogers survived their fight on a Helicarrier at the Triskelion, after which Barnes disappeared. After pulling Steve from the Potomac River, the Winter Soldier embarked on a new mission to find who he was and to get revenge on the organizations that had warped his mind. His search eventually led to Natasha Romanoff, an old student of his from his Red Room days. 

Because Natasha had dealt with brain-washing before, she aided Barnes in his recovery, eventually convincing him to undergo a deprogramming procedure under Tony Stark’s supervision. This procedure removed HYDRA’s influence from Barnes’ mind but set off an influx of memories (and guilt) that would take time to heal. While recovering, Barnes stayed with Natasha who opened up to him for perhaps the first time in her life; the two exchanged a kiss but never spoke of it again. Determined to get his life back, Barnes left New York and set off on a trip of self-exploration until he could connect his old life with his new one. 

Current Status:

James “Bucky” Barnes was last seen near Avenger’s tower where he is still getting to know old allies. He has been deemed a clear and obvious threat, and should never be engaged alone.
