“Oh, come on. Not even for your best mate?” John, who had come to the dance to let Sapphire listen to the music, stood next to Ryder for a minute, smiling. “You need to drink something stronger than that if you’re going to be a party pooper,” he remarked.
“For you, I’d consider it. That doesn’t mean I will, but it’s a consideration.” Ryder nudged John’s arm and finished the rest of his beer. “Technically, I’m not working. So get me something stronger, mate.”
Ryder looked out amongst the residents on the dance floor and took a sip of his beer. “I refuse to dance.” He stated to the nearest person.
“there is a shiny gyarados in the middle of this lake and yes i am risking the safety of my phone and potentially myself to get it. come on… come on…” clark let out a giggle at the ridiculousness of it all, but pokemon go had become his best friend when it came to hiking. it just so happened he’d ended up near the lake and seen the red gyarados. he likely wasn’t supposed to have the app, or really the permanent access to it he had granted himself - but it had no messaging service, and hell he could bring the place to the ground if he wanted using the technology he had access to. it would be easy enough to give people permanent access to an app or two like this, without giving them full on access to the internet. a simple allow or deny line of code. allow pokemon go, deny everything else.
“I don’t understand what any of that means. What is a gyarados?” Ryder looked at Clark confused and shaking his head. “Do you need to get to the middle of the lake safely?”

How many times have I told you you have to be… what?
harlcyhunt:
“i trust the ones that matter. the others are just sex. not that i’m currently sleeping with anyone. unfortunately.” harley murmured, his brow furrowed as he thought of his own frustration. it drove him mad sometimes. “you could be, but that wouldn’t matter. i wouldn’t tell you anything you didn’t already know. i am more than i seem. i know i seem naive, and like i wouldn’t know the first thing. like i think all that is important is being physically fit but i get it… i understand.” though, there was one person he would never lie to, and maybe that would be an issue. harley paused, smirking when he saw how flustered ryder became. “it seems you aren’t invincible to a little flirting after all, sir. are you sure you want me calling you that? other men have made that mistake only to insist that i stop calling them sir.”
“It’s a good thing you’re immortal, mate.” Ryder shook his head at the other. “I never said you seemed naive. I never said you seemed any of these things. There is a lot that goes into guard work and I’m sure every other guard you’ve talked about guarding has informed you of all that it entails and then some. It’s not fun, it’s barely rewarding, it’s work.” Ryder pulled a cigarette out of his back pocket and lit it with his fingertip quickly. He took a long drag that made the cigarette seem to burn faster than a normal one and in less than a minute he was putting it out. “Listen. I like being referred to with respect. And maybe you aren’t the only one it’s been a while for. Plus, I’m a little concerned that if I say the wrong thing you’ll undress right here in the street which I think I’d have to send you home for.”
harlcyhunt:
“yes but what you are wouldn’t matter in the slightest. i’d be fucking you, not giving you nuclear launch codes!” harley exclaimed, shaking his head at the other. “there is no trust in flirting. i don’t need to trust someone to flirt with them. i need to trust someone to tell them personal things, to show them my journals or tell them my fears. i don’t need to trust someone to fuck them.” he stood his ground when ryder moved closer, and found himself biting his lip. “there’s not a way you can lose me, it’s not possible. i’ll be here long after you’re gone ryder, and i plan to carry on this work even then. and trust me, i know all about the rising power and what they’re like. people i thought i knew are on side with them. it made me question everything, it made me question who i trust and who i don’t so you don’t have to worry about that kind of stuff, ryder. i’m very selective now.” at the others words, his brow furrowed slightly, before his features dropped to a sad expression. “i’m sorry to hear that that happened, but it is nice of you to do that. you didn’t have to, and i’m sure them and him, wherever he is, appreciates that.” harley sighed shakily. “i liked the teasing, and the flirting… i, uh, i don’t mind if you continue, either. you just gotta understand, things are hard for me right now. harder than they’ve been in a long time. so when i thought you were doing it for no other reason than to suss me out for a guard position, it… had an impact. but if you like it, feel free. i will do whatever it takes too, ryder. i’m dedicated. you don’t need to worry about that. now… is this the part where i get on my knees and call you sir?”Â
“You should trust the people you flirt with and have sex with, Harley. You should trust them not to hurt you. You need higher standards.” The other man’s words were of concern to Ryder. If the man weren’t immortal, he’d be scared that someone might try and kill him. But Ryder was always scared someone was trying to kill everyone. “You say that now but what if someone finds a way? You cannot predict the future. None of us know all about this group. They are shrouded in mystery. For all you know, I’m a double agent.” He shook his head. “He would have done it for me. Without question. I cannot in good conscience ever let anything happen to them.” Ryder took a deep breath and let it out slow. “I think it is a factor but it isn’t why I do anything. I’m not exactly HR.” He couldn’t help the rosy red that tinted his cheeks when Harley asked if he should get on his knees. “Uh. That won’t be necessary. I..uh...wouldn’t mind you calling me sir though.”
a-rose-in-the-shadows:
“So how much of being a guard is paperwork?”
“I’d say about half of it. We have to record what happens when we’re on patrol, especially if it involves any kind of confrontation or punishment.”
