“dude i totally agree with you.” if ryder had to pick a decade in which its music was his favorite, he would choose the 80s.  there had been many times where he had used that decade of music as an escapism to whatever had been bothering him.  he and blaine had been paired up for this week’s glee assignment where each of the groups had to pick a song from a different decade; the both of them had the 80s. they were in ryder’s room, brainstorming ideas on what song they could perform for the assignment. “and plus the 80s had a lot of catchy songs, it’s hard not to get lost in them and forget about everything else.” he sat on his computer chair, sitting in the opposite direction as he faced blaine. “we’re totally going to win this competition.” he said rather prematurely but he was confident that whatever song they ended up going with, they would totally knock out the competition. “alright, so what songs did we narrow it down to?”

finn and mr. schue telling them that glee club was being disbanded until next year was like a bucket of cold water being dropped onto ryder. for once in his life he had actually felt like he belonged somewhere and now that was all gone, he couldn’t believe it. he sat with everyone else, who were undoubtedly feeling the way he felt all chiming in with their own comments. it wasn’t until tina chimed in with hers, speaking for everyone else that ryder had to say something. though he was upset that glee club wasn’t going to be a thing until next year, one thing he wasn’t going to do was to blame marley for what happened. “hey, c’mon, that could’ve have happened to anyone of us. and it’s not like she did it on purpose, so don’t blame her for it.” he had been met with, the asumption that the only reason he was sticking up for her was because he still liked her until finn intervened and turned the discussion to the holiday concert they still had to look forward to.

after the meeting was over and everyone went their separate ways, ryder waited until marley was alone in the choir room to talk to her. “hey, don’t listen to them. it’s not your fault. the important thing is that you’re okay.” a pause, and then: “you are okay, right? are you eating? getting enough sleep?”

                  she pauses, brow raised in question. ❛ somehow, i rise above                   and maintain my status with ease. high school can be a lot                   easier with someone like me in your corner. ❜ a beat. ❛ even                   if i’m horrified of those donkey teeth taking a chunk out of my                   shoulder if you trip on an open shoelace. ❜

“hey!” an offended look was etched onto his features, even though he should have been used to her insults by now. most of them were stuff he had already heard before. “people happen to like my lame dance moves both on stage and on the field, it totally gets the crowd going.” ryder might be a little ( okay, a lot ) dorky, but that’s just who he was. he wasn’t going to change who he was nor did he care what people thought about him. he had yet to get slushied, so if he was going to, wouldn’t he have gotten one by now? but maybe kitty was somewhat right, he had heard from various glee club members that nearly everyone in the glee club, past and present, had gotten a slushie facial so maybe he wasn’t entirely in the clear. 

he still wasn’t sure why kitty wanted to be friends and he didn’t exactly buy the fact that she was just saving him from a morning slushie facial, but maybe he entered the twilight zone when he woke up this morning. he did find five dollars on his way to school. “okay, kitty,” he conceded before speaking again. “we can be friends.”

“that’s not what that means..” brows furrowed as he looked down at kitty, closing his locker with the hand that wasn’t holding onto his backpack. he wasn’t expecting the blonde to show up at his locker nor was he expecting the question that was asked. though they were in glee club together, in the same grade, and she was cheerleader while he was a football player, they weren’t exactly friends. the most their dynamic could be described as was acquaintances. “what do you have up your sleeve, kitty? you insult me every chance you get and i’m sure you think being friends with me would be the worst thing you could possibly do or somethin’.” if she was actually being serious, then he would consider it. he knew there had to be more to her than just being a bitch all the time.
