I'm sorry if I sound like an angry old man but. . .
. . . it kind of irritates me when the topic of punk fashion comes up and it's always 90s punk. Like, I feel like most (but not all) people my age are unaware of the fashions of 70s punk, let alone 70s punk itself(aside from the Ramones), which ranged from leather and studs, to looking dapper, and even bondage. Hell, something as simple as a t-shirt and jeans was punk fashion.
I guess what I'm saying is, I don't like that when someone says how to dress punk it's always exclusively leather, studs, and dyed hair. Here are some 70s punk looks:
Obviously this isn't everything. You all are ABSOLUTELY WELCOME to add more photos. Also, I apologize in advance if I sound like a hypocrite. Obviously leather, studs, and dyed hair are valid, just don't make it the sole punk look.
Most of the original British punk look (as far as I can remember) was bondage clothes or DIY painted shirts, mainly because a lot of the original British punks were either art students who worked with what they had or worked in McLaren & Westwood's edgy fashion shop (Sex, later Seditionaries) or its many (more affordable) imitators. Punk was also the springboard from which the British side of goth developed, with Siouxsie Sioux being part of the Sex Pistols' following and eternal vampire Dave Vanian being spat on by punks as well as everyone else for looking like Dracula when nobody thought it was cool.
Also gender nonconformism was very common, not least because of the influence the New York Dolls had on the development of punk, the 90s American scene may have really kicked off widespread black eyeliner for men but in the mid-70s Pete Shelley's outfit of choice was an orange kaftan and many different shades and types of makeup (sadly I don't have pictures, I only know that from the Buzzcocks Complete History).
I had a huge paragraph typed out here that ended up wildly off course, so instead of that have some pictures of British punks not following tradition.
Here's X-ray Spex, glorious anticonsumerists. Poly Styrene especially loathed the idea of being subject to the press's idea of what a woman in music should look and act like, proudly bellowing angrily with huge, prominent braces on her teeth. She once said "if anyone tries to make me a sex symbol I'll shave my head" and did exactly that before coming on stage at Rock Against Racism in Victoria Park.
The Damned in '79, a band who never once looked like they were all dressed for the same thing.
Buzzcocks with their DIY painted shirts that they wore for this gig only, because they used regular paint instead of fabric paint and when they sweated onstage it soaked through and their skin was stained in the pattern of the shirts for the next several days.
club night idea: mcr’s entire discography in the order of most danceable to most depressing so by the end of the evening you’re crying on the floor to desert song

broke: The Great British Bake Off has no conflict
woke: while The Great British Bake Off is refreshingly devoid of the usual man vs. man conflict, it is filled with conflict of other varieties, notably man vs. self (the contestants vs. their knowledge of baking) and man vs. nature (the contestants vs. the time limit)
Man vs. the forces of evil (the contestants vs. Paul Hollywood)
