“Good.” She smiled. Ryleigh laughed knowing her answer before she even said that to him. “I know, I was kidding. But she’s waiting till marriage so if you can wait that long then totally go for it.” Ry smiled. Her and Levi were the opposite in that manner.

AJ sat shocked for a long moment as he stared across at her.  He honestly couldn’t remember a time when Ryleigh had ever told him no.  “Very funny.  What?  You wanna go to dinner first?  We can do that too.  Was just never our thing.”

Ryleigh looked at him with a serious look. “No, I’m serious.” Although Ry never turned down a dinner she needed, too. “I can’t anymore.”

“You should join me.  We can get things started back up again,” AJ told her, keeping his voice quiet.  He knew they would start back up.  They always had since the thing between them started.  Friends with benefits.  Whenever the other needed.  It worked for them.  

Ryleigh nodded... there it was. “Yea, you see. That’s a no from me but I can point you in the direction of some great nurses or doctors. Which ever.” She smiled. With everything with Nathan she had to play it cool without giving it away.

“Don’t pretend I didn’t tell you.  That’s why the last night together was so much fun,” he grinned wiggling his eye brows at her.  Those memories had kept him warm for awhile during his stint overseas.  “Because I was ready to take a hot shower again Ry.”

“I know.” She remembered that night fondly. “Going out with a bang.” Ry smirked. “Oh yeah? I can’t say I blame you for that one.”

Jo shook her head, laughing to herself. “It’s like a Lincoln family reunion in this place.” She set the chart down, folding her arms. Jo hadn’t really seen the Lincolns much past their college days, so there was definitely a lot of missed time between them. “I’m a first-year surgical resident. I just got transferred here like a couple of weeks ago. Guess I didn’t know what I’d be stepping into.” She smirked. It was both comforting and unsettling to have people she knew here with her. “I, uh, actually go by Jo now. Jo Wilson.” She brushed past it, looking to change the subject. “So, what you’re saying is you basically run the peds floor. Hardcore, Ry.”

“Did you know us to go anywhere without each other?” She smirked. It was true they really followed each other places. “That’s amazing! Congrats. Really? You have no idea. This place is crazy, everyone is crazy.” She raised an eyebrow. “Wait why did you get transferred?” That wasn’t typical of a resident but she was sure there was a good reason. “Oh, of course. Well, Jo. How has life been?” She laughed. “You’re right. They wouldn’t know what to do without me. I’m the best nurse practitioner around. Robbins and Price are very happy to have me around.”

“Ryleigh Lincoln, you can’t say things like that to me in public, we’ll end up getting in trouble.” Nathan said with a smirk, but was conscious that he didn’t want to give off the wrong impression. He cared too much about Ryleigh already to let her be just another nurse, when she was so much more. He wouldn’t be putting his friendship with Link at risk if she wasn’t. “Now that is a bucket-list item I am yet to tick off. I take it I can ask for your assistance?” He asked, his eyebrow raising at the question. While he might not be rushing to get Ryleigh into bed to prove that he was as serious about this as he was, he certainly wasn’t going to refuse it if it was on the table. “Maybe I like my home comforts. But you having your own place is most certainly something that we’re going to be taking advantage of, at least before Link finds out.”

Ryleigh smirked. “We won’t get in trouble.” She teased. Ryleigh was very much a flirt in that regards she rarely went on a date that didn’t end that way even with people she did care about. She was that girl but she didn’t care. Ry paused. “Wait you’ve never? Huh, that’s surprising me be but no shame in that. I think I could change that.” Ryleigh thought everyone did it at least once. “I get that. Uh, yes of course we are. The only down fall is Link and his key he just walks in whenever sort of like I do at your place.”

“Well I appreciate it, so I’m going to thank you.” She expressed as she walked into her sister’s apartment. “Nice place you’ve got here. Got room for one more?” She was joking, she had her own tiny apartment and was more than happy there. “That hospital is kind of crazy, isn’t it?”

Ryleigh nodded. “Ha, definitely not. I like my own space but I won’t say no to a slumber party.” She smirked. They used to do that as kids and Ryleigh used to love it so much. “Are you kidding me? You have no idea.”

“Good.  So sending me a few status updates to keep your secret from Link, who I have worked with a lot lately, will be no trouble at all,” he told her with a nod.  “Yes, I do know where you both live but I don’t want to have to use that knowledge.  Plus, who knows?  My date might be going well with April too,” he grinned.  

“That I can do. Hey, it’s a secret and Link is not at all scary. Don’t let him scare you i’ll kick his ass.” She looked at him. “You won’t have to use that knowledge. Yeah? Do you have plans for after the date? You know she isn’t going to have sex with you right?”

He pouted a bit when she pushed him back into his chair.  “Somehow.  Someway,” he said with a grin.  “But I did miss you,” he added.  “No one is quite like you, you know?”

Ryleigh turned to face him. She rolled her eyes playfully. “I do know that but you up and left me. Someone so memorable, how rude of you.” Ry joked knowing they were never actually together just sleeping together. “Why did you come back?”

Jo’s eyes glanced over the chart of her patient. She had been placed on peds rather suddenly and was left to try and decipher the absolute chicken scratch handwriting of whoever had recorded the patient’s information upon their admittance. She flipped a couple of pages, walking out of the room towards the nurses station, her eyes barely moving from the chart. She heard the person behind the desk speak, but Jo began shaking her head. “I get that, and I’m sorry, but this chart is absolutely illegible. I mean…” she finally looked up to greet the person in front of her. She raised her eyebrows, a small smile creeping onto her face. “Wait, Ryleigh? Oh my god, you work here too?”

“I’m sorry but that is not my fault.....” She paused and looked up. ‘”Brooke?!? Oh my god what are you doing here?” A grin crossing her face. Ryleigh hadn’t seen her in god knows how long. “Yeah, I do. Living my life on the peds floor.”

“Ryleigh Lincoln?” Lizzie asked, ducking her head a little and hoping that this nurse was who she was looking for. When the other woman turned, she smiled. “Hi, I’m Lizzie Shepherd… I just delivered a premie baby – 4 months, and the nurses that I have on rotation for the day aren’t exactly instilling confidence… I know you’re a paediatric and I swear that I’m not trying to poach you from your patients but you’re the best – everyone says so, and I’d really appreciate it if you could check in on my patient any chance you get? He’s in an incubator but he needs to be monitored pretty closely and I think you’d be the best person for the job. I’ll put in a word with Dr. Hayes and Dr. Robbins– I just wanted to reach out and see if you would be okay with it first,” 

“That’s me.” Ryleigh looked up and smiled. Another Shepherd at least this one seemed really nice. Although, she didn’t have any issues with the shepherds but she did know people who did. “Wow, my name is finally getting around this hospital. I would be happy to help, my work load is pretty light anyways. Oh you don’t have to do that they already know I’m the best but if they hear this they might get mad and think you are trying to steal me away.”

Levi nodded.  She knew her brother best, and all he could do now was support her decision.  As her friend.  And he would even if all he saw were huge warning signs.  “No, I am not kidding you.  You’re my friend Ry.  And I want to know you’re safe.  I mean….he’s better than a random Tinder date, but still.  And yes, I know you are an adult,” Levi told her.  

Ry smiled. “Levi, I’m fine. I promise you I’ll be fine. I appreciate you worrying about me but I’ll be okay. It’s Nathan you know where he lives and you know where I live. I’ll make sure you know I’m okay.”

Ryleigh placed a hand on his chest pushing him back. “Awe, i’m so happy that I was memorable for you.” She grinned. “I’m sure you survived without me.”

“Nice to see not everything changes.  Interns are still idiots,” AJ mumbled as he plopped down into the chair at the nurses station.  He grabbed a chart and pulled a pen out.  It had already been a long morning, and he had another few hours to go before he could even think about taking a lunch break.  “Remind me again why I came back to this?”

“Not idiots just babies.” She sighed. Once she realized who sat down next to her, her eyes-widened. “AJ?” Ryleigh looked at him in disbelief.  “What are you doing here?” Shit, she thought.
