Only reason I can imagine that Turnbull and Watts are unprotected are because they're entertaining other offers. My copium is that if we're entering a rebuild year, our defence was our biggest strength last year (we didn't win many games but we didn't allow too many goals either, Kirky being the #3 goalie despite the team finishing #5). I don't want to lose our Cap or Watts, but everyone, on every single team, can be replaced. If we lose Watts or Turnbull (aka the only two players who scored goals) we can afford to bring in other players who can score, as well as further develop who we already have (gonna believe in Maltais and Compher's abilities to turn things back on in 26-27).

Raygan Kirk was on a two year contract, and she was the very last pick of the 2024-25 draft and coming in as the backup to the (then) league's goalie of the year award winner so her having a low-low-low $$$ contract tracks. She'll be getting a sizeable bump this year from whatever team she signs with. Watts, I'm less sure about but I'm pretty sure she willingly accepted a comparatively low contract (particularly as she made a LOT more money in her previous league before the PWHL formed) on account of A: wanting to be in Toronto over Ottawa, and B: Toronto not having any salary room on account of the vets the team had at the time who (at the time) were also star players (Fast, Soup, Spooner, Maltais, Nurse, etc). If she re-signs here, I expect her to be close to 6 figures or at least Turnbull levels.

The danger zone for anyone we want to keep is that Hamilton is close enough to Toronto (hours closer than Ottawa is) that I can't see there being much incentive to stay here for familial/life reasons if Hamilton offers up numbers and clauses that beat what the Sceptres offer. More so than any other grouping of teams, Hamilton and Toronto will be death-matching to secure players from one another. I'm glad Hamilton has a team, but from a league competitiveness standpoint, this is another reason it feels like a whiff.

That and Troy cherry picking the players he wants from Toronto for SJ is a huge thing (he stacked Canada with Sceptres and Victoire after all). I know the Tumblr consensus is that we're all supposed to hate him, but the players apparently like him and even though Canada only won silver at the Olympics and Toronto missed the playoffs, the Sceptres were #1 and #2 the first two seasons and he's won 3 world championships AND Olympic gold — fan hatred or no, he's a compelling coach to play for. Crossing my fingers one of Toronto's assistants gets the head coaching gig.

(reminded myself that everyone also hated Sparre when he was announced as Kessel's replacement because eww another man, but Boston rebounding in spectacular fashion this season made everyone a fan of his, making him also a super compelling coach to play for in Hamilton as a result as well).

While I'd prefer the San Jose PWHL team not be named ANYTHING that links it to the all-encompassing "sharks" (would be diminutive to give them a subclass of shark like "stingray"), I'd like to propose a name that would leapfrog "sharks" if you absolutely have to go with something shark adjacent.
