The last thing he remembered was their gentle hand cupping his cheek, wiping the tears that escaped his desperate eyes.

Even in times such as these, they only cared about him. They paid no attention to the blood pouring from the wounds on their body. Despite the bruises around their neck from Lasko moments before, they showed no pain, only love. They knew that any pain or sadness would affect him too, so they decided to focus on the love they had for him, to spend their last moments together in peace. Their eyes looked at him and only him, and despite the life escaping them as each second passed, they only focused on him.

Always so selfless.

Always so kind.

That’s the Freelancer Vindemiator knew.

“Let’s run away.” They had said.

Vindemiator will forever regret not taking them and escaping this cruel world sooner.

And now they paid the price.

The warmth from their hand disappeared as their hand fell limp by their side.

Gavin woke up with a start. He rarely had dreams, but this time it was different.

It felt real. Too real.

They were gone.

He frantically turned around, and breathed a sigh of relief when his Freelancer stirred behind him. They rubbed their eyes, mouth open, about to ask what was wrong, but Gavin interrupted them by pulling them into his arms. He rested his chin on the top of their head, keeping them close, forcing every inch of his body to feel their warmth and remind himself that they’re there.

That they’re alive. That they’re safe.

Freelancer was confused, but as usual they put him first. Their hands rubbed up and down his back in soothing motions, and they reached for his core with their magic, reassuring him.

Their kindness made his heart ache.

Always so selfless.

Always so kind.

He couldn’t help but hold them tighter, a scary sense of Déjà vu consuming him.

Gavin was afraid.

He was strong and could wield magic as easily as breathing.

But he was afraid.

“I never want to lose you.” He confessed in the darkness.

Freelancer reached up to cup his cheek, wiping the tears he didn’t realise he had shed. He held the back of their hand, nuzzling into their palm.

They were warm. They were alive.

“I’m not going anywhere.” Freelancer promised.
