ACM and Slop
ACM is now arguing that all papers should be fed to LLMs: https://cacm.acm.org/opinion/now-is-the-time-to-give-llms-access-to-the-acm-digital-library/. I'm thinking about responding to them. Is this a good response?
Once upon a time, there was an eager undergraduate student. He was passionate about computational linguistics as well as machine learning. He thought about combining both. He had applied to become a graduate student at Universite de Montreal, one of the most renowned research facilities for machine learning. His prospective supervisors were Guy Lapalme and Bengio Yoshua, a famous neural network scientist. Had everything gone according to plan, he would probably become a great AI scientist.
But this was not meant to be. He ended up with a PhD in human-computer interaction instead. Although his life is different from what he had believed, he occasionally thought about his alternate self who got to become a great AI scientist.
And then, he has to deal with many instances of cheating. His dream has turned into a nightmare. His long-forgotten past has come back to haunt him in a rather grotesque way. He is now facing many students who all claim that their nearly identical code is wholly original. They abuse AI, and in turn, AI abuses them back. The students can no longer recognize what real code looks like. It is also highly probable that many research papers that the students wrote were also AI-generated. But he could not be any wiser.
Peer reviews also became nightmarish. He had to wade through haunting papers that were seemingly AI-generated. While many great statisticians were trying to settle the Bayesian v. NHST debate, little did they know that the cutting-edge statistical analyses are now just p-values without any statistics and descriptive statistics are seemingly sprinkled randomly and arbitrarily. The reviews from other scientists were also odd, and occasionally nearly identical.
This almost-AI-scientist also has made a terrifying discovery while working through HoloLens sensor data. From a haunted AR-enhanced museum, he found data sets that repeatedly laugh at the combined human-assisted AI and AI-assisted human attempts to parse them. As it turns out, the data require some extreme out-of-the-box thinking. AI and humans must work together. However, the "AI" here is not the LLM-based one. Rather, it is an aggressive form of exploratory data analysis (EDA).
What the ACM is doing here is not what I have been doing. Instead, it is pushing all work onto AI. This is an asymmetrical relationship where the AI is the Giving Tree being cut down to its stump. This is not respectful to AI nor its pioneers.
He does wonder about his alternate self sometimes. Perhaps, his alternate self is sleeping easy because he is making a lot of money and getting all the accolades. Or perhaps, he is sad knowing that his work is being used to degrade education, peer review processes, and more.
This scientist with a low citation cannot dictate what the ACM will do next. Afterall, he let his ACM membership lapse. However, he is making a humble request: Please leave his ACM papers alone.
Also, you guys should totally check out Neurosama streams - especially the cooking shows. You may find the experience enlightening in some ways.
So my ancestor was probably a Neolithic emperor named Emperor Shun. Being such a distinguished man, AI has to honour him with a slop. This YouTube short https://www.youtube.com/shorts/fLTTcfvj12g has so many inaccuracies: - The Chinese writing system probably wasn't invented yet. - How did he get the silk robe? - The video totally glossed over the famous execution of Emperor Yao's father. In short, the Zonai in Zelda is probably more accurate representation than this entire videos.
Look ma. I'm going somewhere.
Anti-Gen Alpha YouTube Brainrot
Had the misfortune of seeing a lot of anti gen alpha recommendations and YouTube. Knock it off, guys and gals and non-binary pals. You sound like boomer teachers that I had in Thailand who told other students and me that Japan used Anime and Manga as a way to avenge its loss in WW2.
Dear Association for Computing Machinery,
If you are going to charge people for LLM-generated podcasts, then you should be willing to eat LLM-generated output as well.
If there's an anthem for extended reality researchers, it's probably this one: "Superman Cannot Fly." Just like how most metaverse conferences have no metaverse facilities - and we do need ones at the moment. (If the Cypriot conference accepts my papers, it had better not be under a drone attack.)
So this is why the metaverse died
I got someone who shared a video on Facebook featuring a topless dudebro wearing a bacon pendant screaming about Prophet Muhammad. I do not need a man wasting bacon screaming at me about things that I barely understand - after recovering from what could be a gout attack. So I unfriended him, and reported the video. And Facbook thinks this is cool. The humiliation of the bacon goes unpunished. A pig didn't die for this! Now, imagine being screamed at by a bacon-wearing topless dudebro in immersive metaversal 3D and reporting does nothing. What an incredible user experience! The expensive goggles are totally worth the experience!!!!
Facebook AI slop making Heather blond. Mark Zuckerberg's masculinity programming energy has gone awry. Stop turning Heathers into Bonnies! Air Canada runs NDP now too, eh?
Peak Cullinary Experience
For an elevated and peak cullinary experience, substitute the orange carrots with purple ones when making Japanese curry. You'll not regret this at all.
Y'know. There's a guy who likes to talk about ethics. Guess what's unethical? Putting a vice chair of a university research board on a mailing list without his consent and forces him to read incoherent emails.
Well, since my IQ is below 150, what do I know?
My mood when the Association of Computing Machinery decides to do AI Podcast on papers, and charge people money for it.
I heard that the most prestigious computer science association, ACM, is now putting AI Podcasts on article. For whatever reason, this reminds me of this video... I can't put my finger on why though :/
I used AI to make Geoffrey Hinton, it gave him a mustache. All hail evil Hinton!
Truth about PhD
A PhD is a mark of stubbornness, not intelligence. It's why Dr. Eggman kept going after Sonic despite his repeated losses.
Peaked at the BSc Level
So I tried to convince someone to log off social media because he was posting incoherent stuff. Only then did I find out that he had peaked at the university level and still refused to move on. He refused to see me as an assistant professor, and kept thinking I must be the same undergraduate student from years ago. He also doesn't seem to understand that professors don't go around preaching philosophy and arguing about women. My students would demand a refund if I went around and did these things.
Microsoft just made a folder icon with freckles!!!! I thought I dirtied my screen for a second!!!
