[Stares at her for a good long minute trying to figure out if this is some kind of trick, before shrugging and saying (slightly hesitantly)]....Yes...?

“My hero. No really, I think they’re polishing up your award as we speak.” Anger was easy when she really thought about it. That night, she’d just been trying to protect her pack and…and Sean. She had been protecting Sean, and he’d locked her up in a cage until the full moon was long gone. The humiliation alone was enough to make her blood boil but she couldn’t deny either that she was scared and she definitely wasn’t letting go of the fork. “You hunters, so noble.”
“I don’t want an award, I just don’t want anybody to get hurt.” It felt a little like irony that he was saying that to her, after everything that night had supposedly been about. “You werewolves, so stubborn.” She was still so very Katie, so much the girl who’d dated his brother, except she wasn’t. She was a werewolf, and a liar, and she’d probably manipulated Ryan, too. That was just how werewolves operated. “Still, I’m not going to hurt you.” It still sounded like a threat, a silent right now hanging on behind the words because it wasn’t like he could claim to have never hurt her or had intentions to hurt her. “You should go home.”

“The thing. The ‘hey it was just a regular morning but now your whole life has been turned upside down and set on fire’ thing. The- Yes, asking the tough questions. Could ya at least let a gal finish her cupcake first?”
“Hey Sean. It’s…going. Yeah, I think everyone and their grandma knows that Ryan was prom king. We have a framed pic of him in the crown in our living room. I mean, Danny’s in it too so it’s not weird weird but- Anyway. I’m not really campaigning but it was pretty cool to be nominated.”
“Oh, I guess that is a thing, isn’t it? I’ll work on that. I keep getting distracted during breakfast, and then my cheerios get all soggy, and I hate that. Yeah, course, Carrie. What kind of cupcake is it?”
“That’s cool. He does talk about it a lot. You guys are awesome, I’m sure he loves that. Maybe you’ll get a picture in a crown to go next to it this year. It could be a tradition. Yeah, campaigning seems hard, I don’t blame you. It’s still great, though, you should win. And I’m not just saying that ‘cause I don’t know who else was nominated.”

Yeah, it’s supposed to help headaches and cramps and stuff. I think my sister takes it. Never? You must be really lucky, I get hurt all the time and have to take painkillers. Maybe her phone is dead. I always forget to charge mine. You should get her a portable charger. Oh, no, that’s Ryan. I’m his brother. Do you go to school with Danny?
Yeah. You look upset, and I’m not doing anything. Of course I want to help. Oh, you’re twins? That’s cool, I have a twin too. Ryan, actually. Do you know where she was last?

“Maybe you shouldn’t ask nonsensical questions is all. Those tend to make people a little snappy.”
“You really don’t like me, do you? I’ll try not to ask you any more nonsensical questions, but Ryan says I’m not very good at telling what makes sense and what doesn’t, so it might happen again on accident.”

It’s definitely not okay. How many times have I done this? Next time just– well, hopefully there won’t be a next time, you’d think I’d be better at that with all the rants I’ve gone on– not the point. The point is, if I ever do something like this again, you’re more than welcome to just interrupt me and set me straight.
Not that often. Just a couple times. Six? Maybe Seven? I haven’t been keeping track. It’s okay, you aren’t the only person to do it. I could start wearing a shirt that says ‘Not Ryan’ on it, if that would help. He probably wouldn’t wear one that said ‘Not Sean’ but he has--how does Selena put it--actual taste, so I guess people don’t really mistake him for me that often.

“You really have to ask? At least when you’re quiet I can look at your face and forget how annoying you are. Oh my god, shut up. I don’t want to know what the answer is. Of course I am. Why I even bother buying nice, expensive coffee when I know you’re going to drink it all is beyond me. At this point I’m going to buy instant to leave out and just hide the good stuff.”
“I don’t like you either, but at least I’m mostly nice when we have conversations. I know that’s a lie, ‘cause two days ago you told me the most annoying thing about me was my face. See what I mean about being rude? You’re not that good at hiding stuff. I’ll find it anyway. What if next time I bring waffles to make up for it? Just to make up for it and not to bribe you to stop thinking about buying instant coffee. Gross.”

“Don’t—,” she’d pointed the fork at him before she could really register what she was doing. The level of threatening she was reaching was, clearly, astronomical. “Stay over there, Sean.”
“As scary as you are, fork or no, I’m not going anywhere. You’re human right now, right? You’re safe.” It was a little annoying to have to admit it to her, but they really didn’t hurt humans. Even if the human could go back to being a werewolf again at any moment. It just wasn’t done. Regardless of how stupid she looked with the fork. No, it really was against everything they stood for, no exceptions. So she was safe.

“Why do you always seem happier when I’m not talking? See, I knew it. You don’t get to comment if you don’t know the answer either. Uh, I don’t know, a while. Since I let myself in this morning, at least. By the way, you’re almost out of coffee.”

“It’s not a trick question, I was just asking. I’ve been trying to figure it out all morning. Doing what? What am I doing? asking the tough questions? ‘Cause yeah, I’m doing that.”
“Hi Carrie. How’s prom stuff going? You know Ryan was prom king years ago, he could probably give you some advice.”

“Whoa, dude! You know it’s way too early for you to be blowing my mind like this. I swear you should teach like, a philosophy class or something.”
“I know. It’s been driving me crazy since I woke up. Don’t you actually have to know the answers to be a teacher? I guess it would explain a lot about high school if you don’t. No offense to Havens High, but some of the teachers were really questionable. You remember.”

“What you really should be asking is ‘Why don’t big toes have a special name? Why aren’t thumbs just called big fingers?’ Now there’s a head scratcher for you.”
“That’s true. I never thought of that. Why don’t they have a special name? Toes are just as important as fingers. Maybe more important, since toes balance you when you walk, and fingers just hold pens and stuff. Maybe thumb means big finger? It wouldn’t be Latin, though, so maybe not. We should ask a doctor.”
