Finally Finished!

I didn’t have time to photograph my cousin with the book in the end, so I decided to make some fun GIFs until I can find the time to photograph him. Unfortunately the frames are quite irregular because I didn’t have my tripod at hand, but I kind of like the quirky touch it gives.

About my book

This book is all about Keyboard Warriors. It is a collection of mean comments and keyboard images. Every mean comment comes with an interesting keyboard image in this book. It demonstrates a world of keyboard warriors.

The reason why I chose to make this book is because I see mean comment online all the time. I feel like keyboard warriors are actually around us, then I decided to make a book about them. This book can also remind people what they say online is hurtful to other people.

During the making process, I kept thinking what information/content should be included in my book, what kind of message I should deliver to readers? Should I be guiding them in my book? Should I make it easy to understand?…Many questions  going on in my head. However, after I had a better understanding on What is a book, I realised that the book is the one leading audience, the book itself will decide what to deliver. What I did in my book was just showing what I found. The connection will be built by audience.

FINAL BOOK PROJECT Youtube Tutorials An anthology Paul Kuhn Book Eco Paper 14.8cm x 21cm First Edition/50 Pages I was really happy with the final outcome of my final Book. I think it followed the concept of Post Digital pretty well of transcribing youtube tutorial into a novel like book.

Week Eleven - group work

Today we met outside of class to discuss the front display and talk about the posters and the website. Andy printed out some photos of the exhibition windows and we cut and paste some different typefaces to test out sizes and styles.

I then did a rough sketch with a white gel pen of the typeface we have decided works best. It is a black letter, but simpler, longer and more narrow than the previous one.

WEEK 10 | Exhibition Design 

Todays class we were finally having a big step up towards starting to experiment with vinyl. We first got a chance to see the vinyl cutting machine space and process. We decided to test a letter to see how it will work. Once we started to stick the vinyl to the window, it showed a lot of problems by not being able to have it a clean stick, yet a very messy one.  With that I think we decided to not do the letter as the clear part itself having to just stick the letter form itself as not only its easier to stick in the large window display it also will be easier to apply it without the messy bubbles. I think we still need to think about it as a group.

I think with that we would need to also cover the inside of the window display with white paper, creating some sort of interesting feel + the white flooring and side walls will make the book pop out more from the large window display.  Another problem is that the vinyl would need to be sticked outside of the window display, which can be very problematic especially with winter coming, it can be easily taken off and get dirty etc.

Week ten - testing a letter

WEEK 10

This week we tested out the vinyl cutter for our window display. Russell started by teaching us how to use the cutter. We then calculated the measurement of the window to see how many pieces of vinyl paper we need due to a width limitation of the cutter. We are lucky to have 11 characters in the title ‘Wot is a Book?’ that exactly fits on the window perfectly. We thus need not worry about having to place two letters in one single piece. Afterward, we printed out two versions of our chosen letter ‘w’, one is cut in the exact letter shape while another one is a cut-out letter from a square. The former one was a more successful attempt as comes in the form of one single piece that makes tearing off easier. For the latter one, we had a problem in flattening the vinyl on the glass due to the large size. Many bubbles were left in between the spaces. Therefore, Andy suggested us to go for the first attempt as it would be easier for us reach success. Next week, we will continue experiment vinyl and do some further planning on the final paper.

After working on our group project, we were given some time to present and discuss our individual project. It was interesting to see everyone’s work and where we’re at as their topics are unique.

Week Nine (how is it already Week nine panic mode)

Today we paid a visit to Library at the Dock. While the pop up library group presented, our group brainstormed some more exhibition ideas. It was good to be in the space itself, as we were able to more clearly visualise our exhibition and what we need to do in order to get it done.

We did a new prototype of the space and what it would look like more or less with the cut out vinyl. We also looked at some Blackletter typefaces and we decided to make our own simplified version so that it can be cut with the vinyl cutter.

We then had one on one consultations with Andy and were able to talk about our book projects and work through some of the obstacles we are facing along the way.

WEEK 9 | GROUP PROJECT

Today we visited the Library at The Docks as we were suppose to present our presentation to the librarian, however it was canceled. Before we went to the library we as a group discussed on FB messenger regarding our model. Andy mention after our presentation that we needed to create a larger 3D model, however we decided to just edit the one that Chloe has made. The original model, the glass window display was not shown on one side (just a block of foam), so I cut it out to make it more clear that its glass. During the library I created a new design prototype using the one of printout typography i have made to see a rough look of how it will be. The group in smaller teams discussed with Andy about either the Exhibition display, Website, poster and more, so we all had a pretty clear idea on what is going to happen in the next few weeks.

Web design

Group project

As the artworks are too tiny to display, our group and Andy suggested making a website with QR codes for the exhibition. Lulu and I are responsible for web designing. We had a meeting last week, discussing how we want to design the website. We both agreed to keep the web design as simple as we can because we only know the basic knowledge of Dreamweaver. We will make a homepage and individual pages for each book. These are some layout we made:

After consulting with Andy, he liked the layout on the bottom left and suggested us making a landing page for mobile version. He also mentioned that we needed not to make a website as he wanted us to focus more on the exhibition. Therefore, all we need to do now is to make a mobile layout and email him a pdf file.

Before class on week 9 I started to look for Blackletter fonts as Andy suggest we should use that as the tile font. I could only found around 6 Blackletter on Typekit. I also look into other type thats more black just to see different examples that we might like to be as title display. From here we decided the very top typography which is Avebury. Then Gemma played around with it and decided to go with Avebury Black as it has less lines and details and would work best to be made into Vinly.

Black Mirror - White Bear 

In this episode the woman is followed around the city by a group that are trying to kill her whilst the rest of the people are using their phones to film what is happening. This gave me the idea for the surveillance theme and from there I have been developing ideas.

WEEK 9

We all visited the Library at the Dock again this week and especially with all this new feedback from Andy we really needed to visit here. So that we could make the changes necessary and also make some final measurements for the final construction. Some started working on some additions to our model whilst I made the first QR code for the wotisabook.com website. 

After we had our time in individual classes we got to talk our individual projects over with Andy. I had been second guessing my decision a lot since we handed in our prototypes to Andy and had been doing some research into more themes but it was when i was watching a tv show with a friend that I got my idea. 

We were watching an episode of Black Mirror and the idea came to me. Surveillance. There had been a lot of memes and jokes lately about the man watching and listening through our computer and i hadn’t taken any notice until now.
