Reflection

Firstly I learnt that time management is the key and must thing in human life.

I can’t believe our second semester finished in a blink of an eye. During this semester I enjoyed our activity in Andy’s class. I loved the idea where we shared our prototype and get feedback from our fellow students. It was literally the best part from Andy’s class. I learnt that sharing is the really important in developing oneself as it not also make us improve our skill but help us realise what we are missing or going into wrong direction. I will never forget that experience that I had with everyone. (really was touched) Getting feedback made me open another direction to design something that I could never think of it alone. I wish I could do this again.

Fact that I wasn’t finished in a given time I am disappointed in myself. I will regret this and actually learn hard from this event. 

Overall, I enjoyed this class and this semester about making design recipe of our own. I wish I could have done better but all this experiences I had with Andy I was fully challenged with my creative side. Broad and free topic of design recipe was hard at first but the ideas slowly come to my mind as we did activities together. If.. only if I get another chance do this again I want to approach other ideas that I had while exploring the concept of design recipe.

Food as love, food as culture

This recipe centres around the idea of unfolding to the surprise that is hidden inside, just like how a traditional Nasi Lemak is wrapped in a triangle with banana leaf. Not only my favourite food growing up but it also reminds me a lot of my childhood and the beauty of the Malaysian culture.

Food Culture Project

Drinking tea is a part of our life in my family, it is showing the moment when tea leaves are put in boiling water, from dry to wet, from fold to unfold, from compressed to blooming, from clear to colored… Now, this moment is frozen in these tea bags. The teaspoon is used as a handle here, the box is covered by a bamboo curtain splint, both of them are the representative of traditional tea culture in China.

I chose Chinese tea for my project topic, as tea has a long history in China, and my family is engaged in selling Chinese tea for many years so I get to know tea since I was young. We drink tea during many parts of the day such as at meals for good health or simply for pleasure. In other words, Chinese tea is meaningful for me and my family, Tea is very popular in China, particularly in the south of China.

Week13 : Food event

Unfortunately I didn’t get to participate in the Food event. But by just looking the photo which Andy took I could imagine how exciting and creative the event was. I am really sad that I wasn’t there to see everyone’s hard work.

I was both thrilled and worried at the smae time when I thought about making this book because its too small and it has a lot of details that I had to think about when I make 25 editions.

Experimenting

I experimented with sizes and different materials.

4x3cm a4 paper

Too small

4x5cm 210gsm a3 paper

Paper is too thick to fold

8x6cm wrapping paper

I tried to use wrapping paper because the patterns give feeling of antiqueness. But, too weak and fragile to put thick water colour paper

360 degree book

“Japanese graphic designer and architect Yusuke Oono (previously) released a trio of new laser-cut storybooks including depictions of ‘Jack in the Beanstalk’ and Mount Fuji. The books are comprised 40 images bound into a book that can be fanned out at 360° creating a narrative that can be explored from multiple angles.”

I loved her work because she made 360 degree possible and she also completed the book by combining narrative side of the book. The concept and form itself is extremely eyecatching. The process in opening the book is also interesting to see.

ABOUT BLIZZARD BOOK BINDING

I was originally inspired about this Youtube video about how to make mini Blizzard book. It’s really small, cute and most importantly looks like a magic book.

After getting inspired by Cara’s idea about how to improve my recipe I decided to research further into 360 degree book.

I put a hole through the last page so it looks like keep continuing.

But this book had a lot of problem it doesn’t really round up to 360 and easily get ripped. But more importantly I didn’t know how to combine it  with other people’s work.

NAME: Incomplete design recipe Concept: Alchemist and Black magic Theme: Infinite, strange, odd, weird and no limit Binding: Blizzard Binding (Crown Binding) and French door binding

In week 8 workshop we combined our first prototype. My recipe looks like a regular book because I want to reflect the strong concept of magic from fantasy stories.

Later on we swapped around our recipe book with others and make something else like adding something, take out something : transforming them. Cara from my workshop class transformed my prototype design to something cooler!! I forgot to take a photo of it but it 2 book combined together instead of French binding. It looks like 360 book!

WEEK7: DESIGNING EXPERIENCE

ABOUT MAI UEDA, Born in Japan and currently based in New York, Berlin and Japan. Mai’s art practice is influenced by Japanese tradition and rituals, as well as her travels around the world. Her art work explores the directness of approach and honesty of self in the electronic age through multimedia installations and performances. 

Residency in the hotel Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, in the middle of casino. Mai did experimental tea ceremony series. Every week with different theme, original spirit of tea ceremony is interpreted in contemporary way. The first experiment was tea ceremony as Pandas We were all dressed as pandas, after entering the tea room, pandas are not arrowed to talk in any recognizable languages but with telepathy or panda language to feel oneness and no boundaries.

Mai Ueda successfully approached interacting design experience with her audiences. By physically participating into the tea ceremony the audience can experience both contemporary and traditional Japanese ceremony.

Designing experience, I want to make my recipe readers experience what incompleteness is!
