The only place Jim didn’t hate being Admiral Kirk was at the Academy. With Spock commanding the Enterprise, and him stuck at a desk job, it took being surrounded by the semi-organized chaos of a sea of cadets to make him feel alive. He regretted letting Enterprise go, but he had to give Spock his time in the chair—even if their girl was being used for cadet training and not exploring strange new worlds.
Christ he missed exploring strange new worlds.
Unlike just about everyone else in the building, cadets, instructors, and officers included, Jim had a real book tucked under his arm as he made his way along, and the book went sailing when a tall, slender girl crashed into him. He caught a flash of pointed ears, long brown hair, and then there was a look of shock on her face for a moment.
Still able to get an emotion out of a Vulcan. Way to go, Jim!
“It happens,” he said, glancing at her rank insignia. Lieutenant JG. That meant she was smart, which was no surprise being a Vulcan, and being a Vulcan, he suspected she might be Spock’s new project—Saavik. “No apology necessary. Did you see where my book went?”
saavikkam
She let out a small relieved breath and then looked around for the book. At least he wasn’t angry with her, not that she really expected him to be but sometimes humans took offense when there really wasn’t any. “I see it, sir.” Moving past him, she bent down and picked the book up from the shadowed corner it had landed in. “A book? I did not know that anyone read books yet.” Glancing at the title, she handed it over. “I do not believe I am familiar with this story, The Count of Monte Cristo.”
“I am sorry sir, I should have been more aware of my surroundings. I will be more vigilant in the future.” It had been an accident and she knew that she shouldn’t have to apologize, especially after he had told her it wasn’t necessary but Admiral Kirk was not a normal human. She had nearly grown up hearing about his exploits and those of the Enterprise and besides Spock, he was the other reason she was here.
Her mental clock was ticking down for her class and she was going to be late if she didn’t leave in a few moments but she couldn’t leave until he allowed her. “Are you instructing a class this semester, sir? I would be interested in attending it.” Even if it weren’t something pertaining to her field, she would love to go to one of his classes, just see what the man was really like.

Starfleet Academy. Saavik had been striving for this since she was a child and had been brought to Vulcan. Following in Spock’s footsteps was something she’d always wanted to do, she knew she didn’t belong at the Science Academy, Starfleet was where she belonged. It was where she would fit in best and she needed to prove it.
It hadn’t been easy at first, it was very different from the learning environment she’d had on Vulcan and it had taken her awhile to understand how the instructors here did things. She was actually grateful that it was more personal than the teaching pods back on Vulcan, she never had liked that way of learning. She also had enjoyed getting to know some of the other species that were in the academy, learning about their cultures and planets.
Now she felt mostly comfortable with the classes and had little trouble keeping up on her homework. The social aspect of things still gave her trouble, most cadets saw her as Vulcan and she wasn’t about to tell them differently. Romulans were not trusted and besides, no one needed to know her true heritage other than those she wished to know. Glancing at her PADD, she noted that she was running 1.34 seconds behind schedule and she picked up her pace slightly to make it to her class on time.
Just as she was stepping through a hallway intersection, she bumped into someone. “I apologize.” She bent to pick up the dropped PADD and glanced up, catching sight of the insignia. “Admiral!” Straightening, she came to attention. He looked familiar and it took her a moment to place him. Admiral Kirk. Oh no. She struggled to keep her face from becoming hot in embarrassment.

Saavik looked around nervously at all the bright instruments, not sure what any of them did. She didn't like being here, she didn't want anyone poking and prodding at her but Spock said that the doctors had to examine her, make sure she wasn't sick. She wasn't, she was just hungry and cold and she glared at all the people staring at her. She could hear them whispering and it was about her, she knew it.
The kids that they had rescued weren’t in bad shape all things considering what they have been through. All of that carnage that the rescue team had come across had made Geoff’s stomach turn, something rare for him as he worked in the medical bay. He had been an integral part of the mission because of his expertise with Vulcanoid biology and even now he was in charge of the medical assessment of the rescued children. He had tended to a few of the other children already and from what he saw, they at least weren’t raised Vulcan. Not completely. Whether or not they were biologically Vulcan or Romulan would have to wait until genetic results came in. The two races were not so dissimilar on the surface. He had to tread very carefully.
Spock had been invaluable in helping with them. They trusted him more than anyone else since he was (as far as they were concerned) one of them. By now, some of the children had started to attach themselves with the other medical personnel, M’Benga included. He had to admit though that he was a little nervous about this next one. Saavik was still very much attached to Spock (who was just as attached to her) and seemed to have a difficult time trusting anyone else. Geoff had to take her measurements and a blood sample without Spock there to calm her. What could go wrong?
Geoff entered and quickly dismissed the others so that he and Saavik could be in relative privacy. At least as much as one could get in the Medbay. “Saavik, I am Dr. M’Benga.” He tried to used the calmest and most reassuring voice he could manage. “I know all of this is a little overwhelming for you, but I want you to know that I am here to help.”
“They should get the idea not to stare at you.” The doctor carefully observed her as she ate, but made sure not to stare. He needed to make sure that he tread lightly here. While she was a child, she was one who had lived in deplorable conditions for her entire life until now. There were certainly survival skills that she had picked up, but that combined with the severity of the changes for her right now could make her and the others unpredictable. He needed to be on the look out for possibility and be ready for it.
The Enterprise wasn’t designed to house children. They didn’t have the facilities for it and Starfleet offered little by way of training. Unless they had experience elsewhere, the crewmembers aren’t going to know how to properly handle their young refugees. Add onto that the fact that these children were going to be stronger than their size would let on (as they were Vulcan/Romulan hybrids and stronger than several of the Federation’s species) and almost guaranteed emotional trauma and you can’t expect everything to go so smoothly.
M’Benga wasn’t going to forget though that underneath it all, she is still a child. “I think I can give you a little bit of ice cream. But don’t tell Dr. McCoy. It will be our secret, alright?”
saavikkam
She agreed with the doctor but didn’t say anything, just kept an eye on the people sitting around them. Saavik wished they would stop looking at her but she guessed they couldn’t really help it. Curling her fingers into fists, she looked up at the doctor with a tiny smile. “I won’t tell him, all he’d do is grouch at me anyway.” And she wanted the ice cream, it really tasted good and if she could she’d eat it all the time. But none of the doctors or nurses would let her.
“Can I get the stuff with the red fruit? I like the taste.” She tried to remember what the nurse had called it. “The...strawberry stuff.” Some of the other kids had told her about a brown one, chocolate or something like that but she liked the red fruit one better. Maybe she could get one of those food things that the adults used to order their food and she could bring some back to the room the kids were staying in for later. “Or what kind do you like?” The grumpy doctor had said something about a lot of different flavors but there couldn’t be that many.

It had been a long afternoon of proceedings at his office. No, that was untrue. It was the same amount of time as per usual, the perception of time however was skewed due to the fact that this particular day had meetings that Sarek didn’t deem as necessary, but that the Tellarite ambassador was insistent on having. It had been the Vulcan’s experience that it would be much simpler to go through the motions as his comrade wished in such matters. Illogical.
As Sarek approached the house in his hovercar, he could see Saavik in the garden practicing what he had showed her earlier. Instead of going inside as he normally would, the ambassador instead went into the garden to observe. Her form was vastly improving since she began a week ago as had her concentration. Saavik’s patience however still needed work. After 7.74 minutes, he spoke.
“You have been improving, however you are moving too quickly and are missing crucial steps. They may seem insignificant or superfluous, but are just as vital as the rest.”
saavikkam
She had been concentrating on the moves so much that she hadn’t heard Sarek coming up on her until he spoke. Jumping slightly, she turned quickly towards him, on guard against attack before realizing who it was and forcing herself to relax. “I was trying to get the steps down, the major ones first, then I was going to work on the rest of them.” That wasn’t exactly true but it was close enough. She would’ve added the other steps in later, if she couldn’t it right without them. “I didn’t expect you back, I thought you would be gone for a few more hours.”
She gave her head a small shake to clear it and then straightened up. “Can you show me what I’m doing wrong then? I know I can do it but it’s not working right.” Maybe it was the lesser steps that were causing the trouble and she frowned to herself. If that was true, she had been making it harder for herself than it needed to be. “It’s hard to move slower, I just want to...” she struggled to explain. “Move faster, show that I can do them faster.” She let out a breath. “I’ll try and slow down though.” She had to remember this was more like hunting than fighting, slow and calculated instead of fast and furious.

“That,” Geoff started when she questioned the cheese, “is a kind of cheese that gets a lot of big air bubbles when it’s made simply because of the process. That’s why it has holes when it’s sliced. Though when the food is replicated on this ship, it doesn’t have that process, everyone is used to the holes so it’s replicated like that.” He pushed a cup of water toward her to encourage her to drink it. Not that she’d need much. “I do and in more variety than you can imagine. But Saavik, you can too. You’re safe.”
The doctor looked again to see if anyone was sneaking a peek at his charge and glared down the one who was unfortunate enough to get caught doing so. “Nobody likes being stared at, Saavik. Unfortunately people are also naturally curious so they find it hard to resist. It doesn’t make it any more excusable.”
saavikkam
“That’s dumb.” Picking up the sandwich, she took a cautious bite and found that it tasted pretty good. She wanted to cram the whole thing into her mouth so no one could take it away but she remembered the grumpy doctor told her not to do that, it’d make her sick. She didn’t see how but she wasn’t going to argue with him. She looked warily at the glass before picking it up and taking a small sip. It tasted just like water, better than anything she’d had back home.
It was hard to believe that she was safe, no matter what everyone was telling her and what she could see herself. She kept waiting for something else to happen, something bad to take all this away from her. The last thing she wanted to do was go back home, to that hell she’d barely escaped from. “How’d they like it if I stared back at them?” She said quietly, glaring at some of the people around them.
It didn’t stop her from eating the sandwich though or drinking the water. She finished it in three more bites and then drained the glass of water. “Can I have some ice cream now?” She’d settle for another sandwich if he wouldn’t let her.

Sarek watched her carefully as she went through the set and coached her when necessary. He even adjusted the position of her arm at one point. However he did note that her concentration was promising. This may be exactly what they needed to help her cope with the new culture she was living in. He motioned her to come inside so that they may get ready the young girl ready for school.
“I shall. I will note, however that your school work still takes priority. Do not allow this added activity reduce the amount of time you spent on your work. The balance between work and recreation and rest can be difficult for some to maintain, but it is necessary to optimize success. Furthermore if you will begin to awake earlier than you have been in order for me to teach you Suus mahna, then you will need to adjust your bedtime accordingly. Am I understood?”
saavikkam
She was tired, it took more out of her than she thought but she felt good too. This was something she liked learning, more than what she was learning at school. This had a purpose in her mind. When Sarek finally called a halt to the lesson, she stopped reluctantly. She wanted to keep going but she was getting hungry and she knew she couldn’t miss school, no matter how much she wanted to.
Sighing slightly, she nodded. “Alright, as long as you promise to continue showing me more moves.” Picking up a fruit, she ate it while collecting her PADD from the counter. “I’ll make sure to do my work and go to bed early so I have time to practice.” She would also practice when she got home. If she practiced for an hour, she still had a few hours to do her homework. It wasn’t like she needed that much sleep. “Goodbye, Sarek.”
*************** School was long and she was grateful to be done. Once she was out of sight of most of the other students, she ran back to Sarek’s house and set her PADD on the counter before getting a drink. Then she went outside to practice until Sarek came home or her self-imposed time limit was up. If she could just get this down right, Sarek would teach her a new step the next morning.

"Meat? I think I can arrange that." Geoff took her over to the dispenser. "I’m going to get you a sandwich, that way if there is something you don’t like in it, you can easily remove it. Though I will let you know I recommend an equal amount so you get the right balance of nutrients." He wasn’t going to be too pushy this time because of what she had been through, but if he noticed that she wasn’t eating everything she should in future meals he was going to need to get creative. Saavik was still growing so it was important that she get everything she needed to be healthy later in life.
After retrieving the sandwich and taking her to a table, he noticed the people that the small girl indicated. Yeah they were staring. He shook his head at them in hopes of encouraging to stop. They turned away for now, but there wasn’t a guarantee that they weren’t going to look Saavik’s way every once in a while. “Well we don’t usually have children on the ship so they are probably curious as to what is going on. But if they keep making you uncomfortable, I will personally make sure they stop or we can go somewhere else, okay?”
saavikkam
Glaring at them as she sat down, she looked over at the doctor, giving her head a small nod before looking over the sandwich. She didn't know what most of the things on it were and she sniffed cautiously at it before taking the top piece of bread off and picking up a red thing. Tasting it, she found she like the odd taste of the thing and nibbled on it to see if it still tasted good. It was juicy and even though it had seeds, it seemed good so she set it back on top of the other bread, picking up the white square of...something. She held it out to the doctor.
"Is this supposed to have holes? What's the point?" She held out the side of swiss cheese. "I like the red thing better." She indicated the tomato. Setting the cheese aside, she picked up a green leaf. This at least she knew was supposed to be a plant of some kind and she set it on top of the tomato. "I don't like being stared at, it makes me feel..." She frowned, unsure of how to explain what it made her feel. "I don't like it."
The meat followed the lettuce and tomato and then the other slice of bread. "You get to eat stuff like this all the time? And can have water whenever you want?" Just the thought of it was hard to believe, it sometimes took her days before she found anything to drink or eat and these people could have it whenever they wanted. She didn't want to leave.

Spock and Saavik-kam: At the Zoo
There were indeed sehlat and many other Vulcan specimens. Spock could not hide the fondness in his eyes for the shelat although the exhibit was of the wild variety and not the domesticated animals he spent his childhood with. He told Saavik of his experiences in his trials and what happened to I-Chaya when they moved to sit on a bench in the sun. Until he lost Amanda, it had always been the saddest moment of his life when he let his old friend go.
"If you would like to check your PADD, why don’t you decide where we should go next," he offered, while he continued to lock away unwelcome emotions. The zoo trip was supposed to be a happy experience. He had not planned on their being negative emotions as well. "Perhaps someday you will join Starfleet and be able to see many of this animals on their home worlds."
saavikkam
She soaked everything up like a small sponge, all the stories Spock told her, all the information that he sent to her PADD and especially about each animal as they watched them. She had never thought she'd see things like this on Hellguard, she hadn't even thought she'd live very long on that hellish planet. Too see all this was almost more than she could take in but she didn't want to miss anything either. She had to make herself pull away from the sehlats and the other Vulcan animals. If only she could have seen them on Vulcan but she never could.
Scanning the PADD, she almost smiled. "May we go to the aquatic animals next?" That was something else she'd had to get used to, entire planets that had enormous bodies of water. Hellguard hadn't had any and New Vulcan had a few but nothing like Earth. Humans had no idea how lucky they were. "Though I don't know if I want to see the arctic animals, it appears that they're habitat temperature would be very uncomfortable." Colder than anything she had ever dealt with before.
Her head tilted back and this time she couldn't stop the smile, though she smoothed it away as quick as she could. "I would like that, very much. Do you think I would be allowed?"

Playing Nice || saavikkam
Sarek nodded, acknowledging her promise. He then looked to the sky to determine the time. It was still early morning and some time before Saavik would need to get ready for school. She would need to do so more often so she could train with him.
"This morning I shall teach you the most basic stance and movement. This particular walk will focus on balance and the shift of one’s weight to maintain it."
In demonstration, the older Vulcan stood with his knees slightly bent and his feet shoulder-width apart. He shifted his weight to his left leg then rotated his right foot out at a 45 degree angle, his heel making contact with the ground before the rest of the foot. His weight then shifted to the right side and without moving the rest of his body, he brought his left leg to himself then circled it around to face forward. His weight shifted back and he turned the left foot just as he had with the right and continued the process.
"It is important to remain patient while learning. These will be the foundation upon which all else will be founded and it is crucial to fully master this in order to remain balanced in the forms. It has taken me 23.57 years to reach the skill level of Suus mahna that I currently exhibit.”
saavikkam
She didn't want to go slow, she wanted to do what Sarek was doing right away but she'd learned that he would only show her what he thought she was ready for. She would just have to make sure to study hard and learn fast, then she could be as good as him sooner rather than later. Her eyes followed his moves intently, taking in each thing he did. It didn't look hard and she absently nodded to herself as she concentrated.
"I'll try." She frowned, starting to copy some of the movements. It was hard to keep her balance at first and she struggled but she kept trying until she had most of the movements close to wait Sarek was doing. "You'll teach me this every day?" She stopped, knowing there wasn't much time left before she had to leave for school. She felt clumsy but she thought she was getting the hang of it. "I'll keep working on this, I'll get it right." Stubbornly, she raised her chin up to look at him.

"Rec room it is." The doctor led his charge through the medbay. As they passed security, Geoff quickly assured them that he would be responsible for Saavik and that they were just going to a nearby rec room to eat. Accepting this, the pair were able to pass easily. The rec room was a short distance away on the same floor. It was mostly frequented by medical personnel who wanted to have their break outside of the medbay, but still within a close distance in order to be able to respond to an emergency. At the moment there weren’t too many in here as they had their hands full with the rescue operation that was winding down. M’Benga hoped that it would be good for Saavik.
"Ice cream? Maybe a little, but only after a proper meal. It’s a dessert and is generally saved for the end of the meal." Even though Saavik was healthy, he didn’t want to indulge her too much too soon in something her body hasn’t seen much of. He couldn’t imagine that there was much by means of sugar down there, or at least that the young girl would have had access to.
"So besides that, what would you like to eat?"
saavikkam
She wanted ice cream but she could see that the doctor wasn't going to give in. The idea of having as much food as she wanted, whenever she wanted, was still new to her and she tended to still think like she had on her home. "Anything I want?" She looked up at him, then at the panel where the food came from. "Meat. I want meat." The grumpy doctor had said they needed to eat more plant-life but meat had been so rare to get that she craved that most of all. That and sweet things.
There were a few people in the rec room and she thought they were staring at her, so she turned her head and glared at them. She didn't like being stared at and it made her want to go and find a place to hide. Forcing herself back to the doctor, she frowned. "Why are they staring at me? I don't like it." Her fingers curled into fists and she crossed her arms as she turned her back to them.

Spock and Saavik-kam: At the Zoo
"It has been observed by many explorers of different worlds that the majority of sentient beings enjoy the company of animals. Felines on Earth proved useful in that they controlled the vermin population." He sent a file on the Black Death to Saavik’s PADD. "That piece of history tells what happened when the rodent population surpassed safe levels. Similar situations were experienced on other worlds where there were not enough predators to cull parasitic species."
As he spoke he continued to the next holographic enclosure where felines from the planet Rigel were housed. He explained about their origins and why their coloration was so different than Earth felines. “There are 30 different species from other worlds at this zoo,” he leaned down until he could whisper into one of her pointed ears, “including Vulcan.”

Remembering the small scavengers she had to chase off to keep the bits of food she could find back on Hellguard, she could see the logic in having something that would chase them off or even kill them. The new data pinged on her PADD and she scanned the information, eyes going wide slightly at the numbers of lost life. It was large, larger than what she had been through, and still the Humans had survived. They were stronger than she had thought and her respect for them grew slightly.
And not just Terran either, other worlds. It almost made her want to have a cat, even though she knew that something like that would not happen again. Following Spock, she watched the Rigellian felines, smiling to herself. They were even better than the tigers and lions and she would have stayed longer to watch them if Spock hadn't whispered into her ear.
Jerking her head towards him, she tried hard not to show her happiness at the thought. "Can we go see the Vulcan ones next?" She had only seen pictures and holograms and to see the actual creatures was exciting. "Is there a sehlat?" Looking at her PADD, she tried to find a list of the animals housed at the zoo. Realizing that she was probably showing too much emotion, she struggled to tamper down the excitement but it was hard.

Playing Nice || saavikkam
It is a good thing that Sarek was well-versed in this routine and that his back happened to be to Saavik when she made her presence known. A glimmer a surprise took his face, but his stance remained firm. He was composed before the little girl would notice.
"It is Suus mahna, a traditional Vulcan defensive martial art.” Sarek spoke while still continuing the exercise. “Self-defense, while its intended use, is not the only one. It teaches discipline, balance, patience and control. It necessary to practice slowly to master these before one can apply them to a combative scenario.”
He came to the end of the particular set and turned to contemplate Saavik. While the gardening was surely helping as an outlet for her emotions and give her something that teaches her responsibility, it failed to teach the sort of control that was important in Vulcan society. While he personally was trying to be more open about it, it was important to him that Saavik be able to control herself for the times she wants to actually be in control of her emotions. Not to let them control her instead.
Maybe Suus mahna wouldn’t be entirely a disaster for her.
"I am able to teach you on the condition that the skills you learn will solely be for exercise, personal improvement and self defense only when absolutely necessary. Is that understood?"
saavikkam
"Suus....mahna....?" The word felt weird to her but she did like how Sarek was moving and it called to her. The fact that it was going to teach her patience and control she wasn't too thrilled with but she was willing if she could move like that. And maybe if she showed the bullies that she could defend herself then they might leave her alone. That made her smile though she hid it fast so Sarek wouldn't see it.
Staring at him, she finally let out a sigh and nodded. "Alright, I promise not to use it unless I have no other choice." She stepped off the bricks and walked over to him. "Can you start teaching me now?" She was eager to start and if it was as fun as it looked, she was going to make sure to keep it up. Wouldn't Spock be surprised when he came home and found out how good she was at this and school?
"How long until I'm as good as you? It's almost like a dance but I don't see how good it is for defending yourself. Can you show me?" She wanted to soak in everything Sarek was going to show her, the faster she learned it, in her mind, the better.

Spock and Saavik-kam: At the Zoo
It was not a surprise to Spock that Saavik appeared to like the predators more than the other animals. Considering where she had been born and lived until he found her, it was perfectly logical. So once they were done with Australia, he took tapped her shoulder to direct her away from the path the other tourists were on, and they went down another branch in the path to find the big cat exhibit.
“In this section they animals are carnivores, primarily feliformia and caniformia, which means feline or catlike and canine or doglike. On Vulcan the sehlat would be considered feliformia.” He tapped on his PADD to send the pertinent information to hers as they made their way to the first holographic enclosure. “This is a Bengal tiger. It is the largest of the felines native to Earth.”

Nodding, she glanced at the PADD and the information he had sent her. Her eyes widened slightly and a small smile played at the corner of her lips. This was an animal she could truly like and respect. Her eyes scanned the data, drinking it all in before looking up towards the enclosure. "It's beautiful." She said softly, putting her hands on the guard rails and leaning in closer to try to get a better look.
The tiger looked towards them and she was sure that it could see them, even if she knew logically that wasn't possible. "I'm grateful that there were no predators like that on Hellguard, we never would have survived." Her eyes tracked every movement the tiger made, leaning back on her heels when it yawned and showed its teeth.
"I think I prefer the felines to the canines." She looked up at him. "Though I would have liked to have seen a sehlat." Sarek had told her about the one that Spock had had as a child and she wished that she could've met him. It would've been fun. "I can see the logic in domesticating canines but why felines?" That had her puzzled.
