I. Bare necessities
Le lendemain - the next/following day: il est parti le lendemain - he left the next day
La veille - the day before: je l'ai vu la veille de Noël - Christmas Eve
Avant-hier - the day before yesterday: elle est arrivée avant-hier
Après-demain - the day after tomorrow: nous partons après-demain
Le jour J - D-Day/the big day: tout est prêt pour le jour J
Le mois prochain/dernier - next month/last month: le projet commence le mois prochain
L’année prochaine/dernière - next year/last year: il revient l’année prochaine
En début/fin de mois - at the beginning/end of the month: le rapport est dû en fin de mois
Le 5 mai – May 5th
Le premier mai – May 1st
II. Expressions
À la Saint-Glinglin - on St. Glinglin’s day: never/when pigs fly; il paiera à la Saint-Glinglin
La semaine des quatre jeudis - the week of four Thursdays: never; ça arrivera la semaine des quatre jeudis
Tous les 36 du mois - every 36th of the month: once in a blue moon
Être né(e) un 32 décembre - born on December 32nd: to be extremely naïve

D’ici là - from here to there: by then/between now and then
Sous huitaine/quinzaine - under eight/fifteen days: within a week/within two weeks (formal)
À date - to date: as of now; à date, rien n’est confirmé

Formation:
Addition: letters left → right in descending value add up (XVI = 10+5+1 = 16)
Subtraction: smaller before larger = subtract:
IV = 4 (5-1)
IX = 9 (10-1)
XL = 40 (50-10)
XC = 90 (100-10)
CD = 400 (500-100)
CM = 900 (1000-100)

IV. Differences from English
Capitalisation: months/days are not capitalised (janvier, lundi)
Date order: day/month/year (5 mai 2024)
Ordinal numbers: only “1st” uses ordinal (le premier); otherwise cardinals: le cinq mai (NOT le cinquième mai)
Definite articles: le lundi = on Monday
Time system: 24-hour clock is standard (quinze heures = 3:00 PM)
