“I grew up in a blue collar family. My dad was a printer—a union guy. So he didn’t have the financial resources to pay for my college or law school. I had to make my own way. I flipped burgers during the week for frat guys at the Student Union. I covered my tuition by spending my summers in the Marine reserves. I’m trying to make sure my kids don’t have to do all that stuff. I want them to be able to backpack through Europe, or volunteer in Central America. Meaningful stuff. I have to hear about the soccer games second hand. That’s why the snowstorm this weekend was so great. No school commitments. No work commitments. We didn’t do much at all. “My wife and I were eating at a rib joint in Key Largo, and we actually took out a piece of paper and made a pros and cons list. The ‘con’ list was pretty normal: time, money, things like that. I remember at the top of the ‘pro’ list was: ‘Full Human Experience.’ After our daughter was born, that became an inside joke with us. Every time she was screaming at bath time, my wife and I would look at each other and say: ‘Full Human Experience.’ The first three months were the hardest. Honestly, we wondered if we’d made a mistake. It was like a bomb dropped and eviscerated everything in our lives. But then our daughter started growing up, and learning to do things on her own, and we kept taking small steps back and getting more of our own time back. Boycott “The Forest” and watch the documentary, “Aokigahara: Suicide Forest”, instead.

Aokigahara: Suicide Forest:

Educates viewers about Aokigahara and the issue of suicide in Japan

It’s a documentary so everything stated is based on facts.

The Forest:

Romanticizes and trivializes suicide, death and the Aokigahara forest which is a real forest in Japan where people go to commit suicide. In fact, suicides in the forest are still happening today so it is extremely disrespectful. It’s been happening for the last 30 years—over 100 bodies are found in Aokigahara every year.

Suicide in Japan is a national crisis.

The mental health stigma in Japan is horrible.

The film is set in Japan but the main cast is dominantly white with a white female blonde lead. Not only that, it also doesn’t mention depression. This then leads to ableist erasure of Asian people, especially Japanese people, with mental health issues.

The film perpetuates the model minority myth which assumes that Asians are universally intelligent or rich, are able-bodied and don’t suffer from mental illness. Everybody believes Asians are rich and smart enough to access healthcare when in fact, this isn’t true at all.

Instead of talking about the real important issues happening today, Hollywood took the tragedies of the Aokigahara forest suicides and turned them into a Hollywood horror movie which in turn, dehumanizes not only Asians around the globe affected by mental health, but those who have already committed suicide. 

Please do not see The Forest in the cinemas. Do not buy tickets to see it. A terrible movie does not deserve any support.

Someone told me about this shitty movie today and at first I thought they WERE talking about a documentary but then realized it was a horror movie.

This makes me so sad. Suicide is a serious problem in Japan. The fact that 50 to 100 people a year commit suicide at this location alone attests to that. So then we take a place that is filled with so much sadness and heartbreak, plaster white faces all over it, and turn it into a horror film for cheap thrills? For shame Hollywood. That is showing so much disrespect to the serious problem of suicide and mental illness in Japan and serious disrespect to anyone who has lost their life in this forest or knows and loves someone who has.

I primarily draw human figures- humanoid figures (ex. elf or has cat ears or whatever) is probably ok too but no animals, furries, etc. 

I reserve the right to refuse a commission I think is inappropriate or not suitable for my skillset, however I am always happy to work with you to tweak your idea so we can make it happen

The completed image will be a digital file, yours to keep/reproduce/etc as you see fit. I reserve the right to use it as advertising for future commissions, as part of my portfolio, or in other ways to promote my work (you can pay for exclusive rights but we would have to discuss).
