Okay, but that last bit is so important. The show ends in a bit of a weird place with quite a few loose ends for the kids and I know some have been pushing it as closure, but this makes it very clear that it’s not, not completely anyways, because this isn’t where it was supposed to end. This wasn’t the end of the story and I think that’s important to keep in mind in watching S16 and GB.

The Ski Lodge was sad and cold, almost like Maya herself. Especially with how she was acting for the last few years, falling for her best friend’s crush, Maya Hart does not do that. Or at least she thought she wouldn’t do something like that. She never thought she would let herself fall for someone as nice, sweet, and caring as Lucas, but she did.

The trip starts with Riley spraining her ankle, she was getting off the bus and fell, because somehow, she mistimed and tripped, twisting her leg.

“Ouch. Ouch. Ouch.” Riley whimpers, struggling to keep herself up with only one good leg. “Maya! It hurts!”

Maya nods, “I know it does, honey.” She holds a hand out to Riley, who gladly accepts, “You twisted your ankle, it’s going to hurt for a while.”

“But that means I can’t go on the nature walks! Or the hikes! Or sit by the campfire! Or do anything!” Riley frowns, clearly upset at her clumsiness.

“Honey, believe me, we don’t need any more campfire situations in our lives.” Maya smirks, remembering a flickering light so bright and two strong hands holding her face up.

“Maya…” Riley glares at her, “I fixed you! I did not do all this work to keep on having you being happy, hopeful Maya, you’re supposed to be sad, anxious, hopeless Maya!”

Maya helps Riley to the bay window, “Riley,” She starts, rolling her eyes. “That’s ridiculous and we talked about this already, many times, many, many, many times!”

“You have never embraced hope before last year, peaches.” Riley sits down, pulling Maya with her, “You aren’t supposed to hope for things, that’s just not you.”

“Riley?” Maya mumbles softly, and Riley hums, “People change people.”

Riley freezes, “People change people…” She repeats, almost accepting what she learned a little while ago.

“Yes, honey, they do.” Maya nods, a small smile on her face.

“If people changed people,” Riley raises a brow, “Who changed you?”

Maya smile dampens, “Uhhh.”

“Maya.”

“Uhh.”

“Maya….”

“You, mostly, but also Farkle, Smackle, and Zay. Obviously your parents too, my mom also.”

“Maya…”

“Fine. Lucas.” Maya announces as Riley breaks out into a smile. “He’s changed me a lot. I don’t like to admit it, you know that better than anyone, Riles, but, he gave me hope.”

“Awww!” Riley giggles, bouncing in her seat, earning a glare from Maya in response.

“What are you so happy about? You’re supposed to like Lucas too!” Maya frowns. “Do you still like him?”

“I think I do.” Riley nods.

“Well, then that settles it.” Maya stands up.

“Maya?” Riley calls after her as she walks off, “Where are you going?”

“To make my best friend happy!” Maya yells over her shoulder, confusing Riley.

Maya walks until she finds Lucas in the living room, sitting alone on the fireplace. “Look, I know you lose your mind over me in front of the fire light, but is it cool if I sit down?”

Lucas grins at her, “You can take your chances.”

Maya plops herself down next to him, desperately trying to ignore the butterflies that start in her stomach as their hands accidentally brush together, because she knows that what she’s about to do will ruin their chance of ever being happy. “Thanks, huckleberry, I didn’t know I needed your permission.”

“You definitely don’t.” Lucas chuckles, “Even if I did give you my permission, you wouldn’t care, let alone listen.”

Maya smirks, “That’s probably true.”

“It is.” He confirms.

“Huckleberry…” Maya trails off, “Here’s what you’re going to do….”

“Oh. So now you’re telling me what to do?”

“Just- just, listen.” Maya looks in his eyes, “Go to Riley, choose her.”

“Bu-”

“Tell her you love her.” Maya interrupts, tears clouding her eyes.

“Maya?” Lucas shakes his head.

“What?”

“Why are you doing this?” Lucas questions, still not fully understanding.

“Because I love Riley, she deserves to be happy.” Maya responds, it’s just as simple as that, really.

“I don’t love her.”

“But you have to.”

“I don’t.”

“You have to.”

“But I don’t!”

“Huckleberry!” Maya groans. “You are making this way too hard for me here.”

“Good.”

“No, it’s really not.”

“Why not, Maya?” Lucas grows annoyed, “Why won’t you let yourself be happy? Why won’t you let me just choose you.”

“Luc-”

“I choose you!” He exclaims, standing up, fists clenching, breaths a little uneven.

“Huckleberry..” Maya sighs sadly, “You can’t… You just can’t.”

He stops in front of her, “Well, too bad, because I do. I choose you.”

Maya stands up so that they’re chest to chest, so close together, she pulls him down to her by the collar on his shirt, something she has done so many times before, with him never once complaining. “Don’t make me spell this out for you. You, cannot, choose, me.”

She stops talking, and he kisses her. He closes the gap between them, and smashes their lips together. Finally. It happens, something they’ve both been wanting for so long, ever since that stupid campfire, even before that most likely.

Maya pants, pulling away, “You just stole my first kiss.”

“I did.” He confirms, smirking slightly.

“I didn’t hate it.”

“Good.” He leans down once more, connecting their lips again.

Fire. Their classmates were definitely right - they’re fire.

New Trailer for Season 4

Regardless of personal shipping preferences, the campfire scene is hands down one of (if not the) best produced scene of the entire show so far. The way the light of the fire falls on their faces, the nature sounds, the crackling sound of the fire, the way they got the sparks from the fire in the close up shots of Lucas and Maya glancing at each other, the camera angles, that one camera shot during the almost kiss that captured them and the whole scene including the stars, Maya’s costuming, Maya’s audible gasp, Lucas’s hands in Maya’s hair, the vulnerability created from just the vibe of the set, the overall production value just being higher in GMT1&2, etc etc etc. The Strong brothers really do some of the best directing on this show.
