Guilt that was soothed by Kokuyou’s arm snaking under his blanket and around his waist. “You’ll catch a cold shivering like that,” he explained himself, as his body further pressed into his, as if he wasn’t also shivering.8 “Then we should share our warmth,” Sazen whispered, knowing Kokuyou had heard him only by the hum he felt on his neck as the man used him half a shield from the warmth. His arm slipped further down Sazen’s body, shifting from the slight dip of his waist to instead rest on his hip. Something that only served to worry Sazen about those desires of his he did not want to push onto Kokuyou unfairly. Desires that he would keep locked up in his mind, even as they warmed him so very much that he only felt the next draft chill by Kokuyou’s shiver against him. His arm sure across his hips, pulled him closer, flushed to his own body. Flush enough that Sazen was able to feel something mirrored only becoming more prominent against his ass.

General Lo/Lu

i was just sent down a translation rabbit hole because of a character that as on LN16 has appeared 0 times! he has been MENTIONED TWICE and with different names, and i only found this out because someone mentioned him and i fully did not recall who he was.

in LN8 Ch4 we have Grand Marshal Lo, he is the highest ranking civil officer/bureaucratic official regarding the Military, and it is implied that he is equally high in the military command as Lakan, just in the bureaucracy instead of the military. He is a tricky person for Jinshi to deal with because Jinshi spent so much time in the rear palace that he otherwise might have found common ground with Lo, and also because Lo is like the one good person involved with Anshi.

he was appointed as a frequent bodyguard of Anshi whenever she was out of the rear palace (i think this is referring to when she was in the inner palace as the mother of the crown prince, and then the Empress) and he was favoured by the Regnant. Lo has the ear of Anshi and the Emperor, and if we believe the rumours about Lakan removing basically everyone who was above him as he climbed the military ranks Lakan also seems to respect Lo but that is much more speculative.

in LN14 Ch 13 we have Lu who was promoted from Grand Marshal to the position of Grand General at the same time Gyokuyou was named Empress, which would have been before LN8 by close to a year. This was confusing me in the English because it is a denser paragraph of names and political alliances and the Lo/Lu thing, and so i went and looked at the Japanese for a clearer picture.

NOTE - i can kind of fumble my way through kana atm, i can not read Japanese and i used google translate and Jisho to parse this information together.

first thing the name change is just English, in both 8 and 14 General Lu has the name 魯 which could be translated as Lu or Ro (which in an official English release would become Lo, like Rakan to Lakan) which almost makes me think this was a bad record keeping mistake on the part of the English translation, this character is maybe a third of one chapter in Vol 8, that is not some one of note.

in terms of the name, we also have Yao's uncle Lu, and i went to see if they share a name, and they do! but, the Japanese gives what i think is his full name when he is brought up, Lu Shijilang, this is from google translate though so that could be wrong but it is

　姚の父親は他界している。保護者たる叔父は、魯ルー侍じ郎ろうだ。猫猫たちは西都から帰って来たが、魯侍郎は西都居残り組である。 Yao's father has passed away. Her guardian uncle is Lu Shilang. Maomao and the others have returned from the Western Capital, but Lu Shilang is staying behind.

魯ルー侍じ郎ろう is what seems to appear when Yao's uncle is brought up, again i am using machine and could very well be wrong

for the i am going to refer to them as Minister Lu (Yao's uncle is the Vice Minister of Rites) and General Lu.

General Lu as he is mentioned in LN14 Ch13 seems to have been promoted from a position that i have been able to best reason as the Minister of War, he is called the Grand Marshal, but i have no clue what that means. It seems that he deals or dealt with the bureaucratic side of war, in a position equalish to Lakan, in the sense they both had a rank equal to each other as the two highest ranking members of the military, as explained in LN8 Ch4, not specifying who, if either, outrank the other. However the promotion General Lu receives means he is now in a position higher than Lakan, and seems that the Grand General is a Commander-in-Cheif, which i am able to best reason as he directly advising the Emperor on matters of War, rather than before as Grand Marshal which would have been advising and justifying to court.

This promotion was given because he is kind of the only person in the Empress Dowagers faction that Anshi likes, and was kind to her, and thus Yang also thinks highly of him, and he was the best option to promote to ease the court tensions around Gyokuyou becoming Empress.

All of this is to say this is a cool and interesting character we know quite a lot about considering he has been mentioned twice. i would not be surprised if he is given the position of PM at some point soon, i think him or the head of the southern founding clan (remembering that the last PM was Shishou, we at least don't know if anyone has been appointed yet i don't think) are the most likely options.

I'm officially done with LN 2 in the manga. So far LN 1 was 20 chapters, and LN 2 was another 20 chapters.

I know LN 3 is going to be 24 chapters (up to ch 64), which then makes LN 4 also around 20/21 chapters, ending at ch 85

but since LN 5 is one of the longest books, i'm expecting it to be closer to 24/25 chapters rather than 20.

so that's 24 months or two years. However Nekokurage writes long AF chapters (which i'm thankful for) but that means each chapter ends up being between 2-4 "parts" . so we're looking at 3-4 years till the complexion of LN 5 in NK Manga, unless she picks up the pace, which I also don't want her doing.....

the third and final chapter of my Jinshi has sexual abuse trauma that gets not healed per se but adressed as a block in his relationship with Maomao, and its quite a good bit shorter than the first two chapters but i really like it as an ending <3

Since Maomao's finger got cut off when she was very young it grew back, however, if grew back wonky, although it's subtle enough that it can be covered up with nail polish. Is that close enough to a scar or mark that it'll show up on Jinshi's hand?

we are told that her finger is crooked, and there is a little bump in her nail, but nothing about it being scarred, and i have kind of decided because i like the introduction being her first experiment, that pinky finger didn't count to the soul bond because it didn't stain or mark her skin.

In the soulmate au, is Ah-Duo the empress because the soulmate of the emperor has to be his legal wife? Would the court prioritize her pregnancy over the empress dowager's pregnancy knowing she's the emperor's soulmate? Would the court allow Ah-Duo to live in a separate estate because while she's the empress, if she can't bear any heirs? Did Ah-Duo and Yang hide knowledge of his soulmate to avoid killing Ah-Duo's chances of freedom?

okay i love this ask for a couple of reasons but the two really important things to me off the bat are the Emperor does not have a soulmate (only about 40% of people do) and Ah-Duo is not the Empress.

i think that a lot of western fans get caught up in this idea of legitimacy and the idea of the first born son, not to say those aren't present in eastern culture's but the western ideas are largely influenced by European kings, who didn't have a lot of harem culture, they had mistresses and illegitimate sons who made plays for the throne. By the very nature of a Harem and a culture that has a degree of polygamy (it is not abnormal for a wealthy merchant or a noble to have a wife and concubine, or lesser second wife/wives) the idea of the first born naturally inheriting is not as rigid.

This is also because of the differences in the "divine right of kings" and the "mandate of heaven"

you have the blood of gods in your veins and thus are a degree above the common people with our blessing and wisdom, vs Heaven has seen fit to allow you the blessing of ruling, or so far as i understand it that is the general gist.

If the Emperor had his two sons by Lihua (assuming the first didn't die), and his son and daughter by Gyokuyou we have two claims to the title of crown prince. Lihua's son being the first born, and Gyokuyou's being the son by his legal wife. That is a part of court factionalism and politics i didn't want to erase, and wanted to indulge further in when it is a fight between the imperial brother and Emperor's son for the title of crown prince, which one of them does court think the Heaven have granted/will grant the mandate of heaven, because they both have a rightful claim to the throne.

the other thing to note is that the position of the Empress is a political one. Yang can't make Ah-Duo the Empress because she does not have the pedigree or backing for that position, which is why in my au i gave her the title of Imperial Nobel Consort, the historical title in the Chinese harem for the mother of the crown prince, when she did not have the background to be the Empress. Yang has every intention of leaving his throne to Jinshi and thus that title was easy for him to grant her. This is also drawn from my of au's like my yandere fic (x) where Lihua's son lives and she is not promoted, because promoting Gyokuyou is the best political decision, the western capital is surging with power, namely the You family, and making Gyokuyou Empress, something controversial because her mother is from Shaho and Gyokuyou looks foreign is best done once she has a son to secure her position. It give the Yi-Sei (the official English is I-Sei, but i prefer the inclusion of the Yi to pair with Shi-Hokushu the northern province) also because Lihua despite giving him a son, is very closely related to the Emperor, there is nothing to be gained by having her as the Empress really, not when the other option is trying to secure a disputed and tense border.

Ah-Duo, was the sole consort of the crown prince and the daughter of a servant, she gets the same treatment in this au, and still looses her womb. Even if she hadn't the moving to the Moon Princes Pavilion would be a little controversial but not too out there imo. Something i think people forget is that court is split into the inner and outer court, the rear palace is part of the inner court but not the entirety of the inner court. The Moon Princes Pavilion would be in the inner court, Jinshi lives in the outer court and convinces Yang to let him remain there even after he returns to his position as the Moon Prince which was strange. She would still be in the inner palace, the same way that Gyokuyou and Anshi are both in the inner palace not the rear palace because the are the Empress and Empress Dowager respectively. Also Ah-Duo was 17 when she gave birth to Jinshi, the move happens when he is 18, so she is 35, even if she had her womb court would be glad for her to be removed from her pavilion allowing a more fertile woman to take her place, and she is being replaced by Shishou, the PMs daughter, so it's way better for a good lot of court if she is gone, but as the mother of the crown prince, and the Imperial Noble consort she is a higher status than the high consorts, and can't not at least reside in a high consorts pavilion, so it deals with a lot of the issues at play to just move her to the inner palace.

but in this au she did still lose her womb so its a no brain question to move her.

i actually imagine a similar situation could happen when Lihua ages out of her role as a consort and is more the mother of some of the Emperor's children, being allowed to reside in the inner palace in one of her sons home as the mother of a prince.

oh look at that, yandere Jinshi is back from the grave! for real this chapter was fighting and really did not want to be written, but i am so excited because i really do love sweet apothecary and i want to be writing it, but oof sometimes this fic refuses lol. anyways, this chapter is very much the start of the turning point, both of them showing their hands just a little too much, because this is not a slow burn and we are getting closer and closer to the end of the fuse before the explosion <3

There was nothing Zuigetsu could do to change any of the situation, so he would simply indulge as he had every right. If they wanted him to act more and more like a prince than that is just what he would do. Before long he was in the rear palace making a stop to the clinic that he often tried to avoid. The lust was almost welcome to the way the women ruined by his father would look at him, seeing the former Emperor for a moment, before turning and running. It was an insult to all parties, it also rather turned his stomach to be thought of as similar to the waste of a man.  The former Emperor apparently clung to tight to what he favoured and when they aged out of his desire he threw them aside. Zuigetsu was rather sure that if anything he was treated much the same as he as a child, that the behaviour was encouraged. To throw away something you once loved because it dared exist outside your design was unfathomable to Zuigetsu. What was his, was his, to manipulate and shape and change as he saw fit. It was his right as the son of heaven to shape the world, what was the point in freezing it? Forcing Maomao to break, to fall further and further until she could not be without him was a task with no end. He was sure there would forever be further desperation for him to plunge her to and it was becoming more and more an appealing idea the longer time went on.
