Malia looks up from her book, grinning ear to ear. She really can’t help it, it’s so exciting, just getting away from all the supernatural drama. Even if it was only for a couple weeks.  She was pretty sure she deserved the vacation and things had been relativiely quiet around Beacon Hills. Malia didn’t want to get her hopes up, but she was. And she’s aware that Argent has been to France, so she trusts his opinion. Maybe times. “Well, that’s great, because I’ve always wanted to travel the world.” Malia explains, looking down at her book for a moment. “So you probably have a good idea of what I’ll be going into- what’s the best part?”

It was nice to see her so excited. With everything that had been going on, the kids didn’t get as much of a chance to be just that- kids. So, seeing them make plans, seeing them get the chance to finish out their last year of high school on THEIR terms, it was somewhat of a relief. He hadn’t exactly been present in Beacon Hills but the fact that they hadn’t had a reason to call him back for a while was always a good sign.

“There’s a lot to see.” A lot he’d never gotten the chance to see. And Chris knew she had more reason to want to travel than most. “Well, there’s the typical tourist spots everyone will tell you to go see. But the COUNTRYSIDE is gorgeous. Outside of Paris. My family has a home there.” He’d always loved the quiet, the separation from the rest of the world. “If you get the chance just go look at the scenery.”

The heaviness of the surrounding atmosphere was so present, like an electric charge waiting for its moment to release. Despite this Pepper stayed silent, motionless. Something in her chest hurt, it has hurt like a betraying. She has always been there for him, and though Tony has never been able to fully open to her, this was too much to bear at times. 

“I missed you, too.” Words have escaped her mouth way too quickly, but she didn’t regret anything. Gulping, Pepper shifted on the sofa and heavily sighed. Listening to his words hurt more than she thought it is going to. He didn’t say anything she would not already know or at least suspect, but she felt bothered by the way how troubled he looked, anyways. “You can beat yourself like this, honey.” A tone of her voice was so tame. Encouragingly smiling, Pepper took his hand into hers and gently squeezed. “You’ve done what you thought is the best. Now, there is not a way back, but at least you keep going. This all was not your fault only, and please, darling, I want you to remember it.” 

The admission hit him harder than Tony fully expected it to. Not that he’d really been expecting it. They’d been taking a ‘break’ for a reason. And maybe there was some part of him that had always thought she’d be better off WITHOUT him. Most people would be. She didn’t need him. The Avengers didn’t need him. His own company didn’t need him. Not that that was really his either. It had been his father’s.

She took his hand and Tony tensed at first but relaxed into the touch after a moment. His gaze stayed fixed ahead in front of him, staring at the wall. Because it HURT. It hurt being there with her and knowing he was just going to go back to his place and she was going to stay where she was. And he wished he could take her words to heart, wished he could believe her, but he never could BEFORE and everything had changed but not that much. Tony shook his head slightly. “But see, that’s the problem. I keep doing what I think is best and I’m...wrong.” It was difficult to admit but there it was. “Pretty damn consistently. I just...” His grip on her hand tightened slightly. “This thing SHOOK me more than it should’ve.” He could still see that grainy video footage of the accident. His parents. His mom’s face as she had the life choked out of her.

BARRY SAT PERCHED ATOP THE TABLE AT STAR LABS. His fists were clenched together to the point his knuckles produced a white sheen in the dimmed lights of the lab. He pressed his head against his enclosed hands and let out a sharp sigh that scratched against his throat. Harry’s words continued to ring in his ears, the words Barry wished were HOPEFUL, instead just brought him back to the grim reality of everything.

                              “So        even on Earth 2 there’s no cure for Cystic Fibrosis?”

“No. There’s no cure. There are ways to slow the progression if it’s caught at a young age, ways to prolong life in certain cases. It’s more progress than we’ve made for a lot of other diseases.” Of course, PROGRESS was always being made. They were always pushing forwards, advancing. The technology on Barry’s earth was in many ways inferior to that on his own but there was still a great deal on his own earth that they had yet to DISCOVER as well. “We’ve made about as little progress as your earth in cancer treatment.” His lips thinned slightly as his thoughts drifted back to his wife. “You can’t fix everything, Barry.”

hey guys! i’ve done a little bit of a cleanup as far as muses go. i’ve gotten rid of several that i’ve never written for and people don’t seem to have interest in. i also got rid of my b99 muses. sorry to anyone who had threads with them. i just didn’t feel like i was doing a good job. i guess sitcom muses just don’t jive with me. i may add n*gan bc i’ve finally watched all of the walking dead but we’ll see.

“You want to go to Paris?” It wasn’t a surprise. A lot of kids traveled when they finished high school. Chris hadn’t himself but that had more to do with his father than an actual lack of desire to do any traveling. He wasn’t sure where he might’ve WANTED to go but he’d never been given the option. Maybe Brazil. Maybe Rome. He’d done his fair share of traveling as a hunter but it had MOSTLY been across America with the occasional trip to Mexico or France to the family homestead. France was the only place he’d really been outside of North America. So, hearing Malia was planning to travel there certainly piqued his interest. “It’s beautiful. Good choice for a vacation.”

It was nothing he hadn’t already said. Chris couldn’t count how many times he’d said the exact same words. More and more recently, it seemed. But after Victoria had died he’d made his sole purpose to keep his daughter SAFE. Because it was his job, it always had been, and because that was what his wife would’ve wanted him to do. There was a reason they’d never told Allison what they really did for a living, why she hadn’t been trained from a young age like he’d been, like Kate had been, and everyone else in his family before him.

Now she knew. Now she’d been trained. But only because Chris hadn’t been able to take that knowledge from her and he wished that he could, he wished that they’d never moved back to Beacon Hills and she’d never found out. But he couldn’t LINGER on the what ifs. He was trying to take a step back, trying to keep her out of things, trying to get out of hunting altogether. He should’ve known better, really. It wasn’t something that you just quit. What he should’ve done was MOVED them altogether again. But they were still in Beacon Hills. There were still supernatural creatures. “We don’t have to be a part of this.”
