Long overdue for some Legendaries! This gentlerock is Stratatonic (Rock/Ghost), which is part of a new Lightbearer quartet of odd fellows. Each based on some kind of thought experiment, this one is inspired by the Allegory of the Cave - the shadowy critter is appropriately not the actual mon, but instead the giant, faceless slate that it's projected onto.

Stratatonic is actually very meek, gentle, and easily intimidated in spite of being over 2 meters of rock, but it has a prankish streak that the shadow expresses. It also has a unique ability in Projection, which causes the user's moves that lower its stats, like Superpower or Hammer Arm, to instead lower the target's stats. Status moves will instead lower all adjacent targets' stats.

Every once in a while I reread Leibniz’s Monadology and I get a little turned on

While I’m talking about film, I wanna shoutout Ladri di Saponette by Maurizio Nichetti, a criminally underrated Italian absurdist pastiche comedy from the 80s that spoofs Ladri di Biciclette, a genre-defining neorealist film from the 40s.

It depicts a director (Nichetti himself) who is promoting his eponymous film, a more pessimistic and consumerist-tainted Ladri di Biciclete. He stumbles through a TV studio that’s screening his film, with some slapstick. However, his film is interlaid with advertisements that begin to bleed into the film and change the plot, as the layers of reality blur. The desperate director must then enter his own story to try to salvage the narrative.

It has multiple nested plots, including a family in a living room watching the broadcast on their TV, paying very little attention to the chaos unfolding onscreen.

It’s a reflection on how we consume media, how we make art, the changing character of Italian cinema, and the effects that consumerism has had on these subjects.

It’s also just really funny and has an awesome ending.

I’ve been working by way through Švankmajer’s filmography. Něco z Alenky and Lekce Faust have absolutely fed my growing doll and puppet obsession. This film has some incredible imagery that had a lasting impact on me creatively. I’m very excited for Otesánek!
