having or showing keen mental discernment and good judgement
i think this will end up being more of a ramble than anything, but please bear with me. when beginning to write my application, i knew that jamie was going to end up being a smart character. that came with the territory of the label. however, i wanted him to be more than just book smart. to me, this could have gone in two ways. i could have made him more street smart or more world-wise. i chose to go with the latter. at first glance, he doesn’t really seem like someone who would be like that.
jamie grew up sheltered but privileged. his whims were entertained and he never knew what it was like to want something, but he never got to chance to make his own choices. he was essentially to become a model of his father, only younger. for the most part, he did. he was technologically savvy, he could study and understand everything on the page. but he never had the chance to say no or that it wasn’t what he wanted.
come college, and the structure of his life dissolved. no one was there to tell him ‘be this’ and ‘do that’ and he lost sight of himself. for a period, there was no one he had to be. still, it got to the point where jamie could have let his life fall apart or get back into line. after having fun and enjoying himself, certainly past the point of excess, he realized he didn’t want to be the exact figure he had been raised into all his life.
he started taking classes that he enjoyed. he joined clubs. he figured himself out as a person. “i’m jamie bryce and i care about the planet.” “i’m jamie bryce and i took a theater tech class because it sounded cool and the theater students have a popcorn machine.” he decided never again to say “i’m jamie bryce and i’m thriving off of nepotism and privilege.” he never said that last one -- but that’s how his life was going.
when graduation came around, he knew that he didn’t want to work for his father right away. this was his decision to make and he stuck to it much to the chagrin of the elder bryce. instead, he travelled. honestly, this was the best thing he could have ever done. he lived in hostels and in homes that people invited him to stay at. he ate traditional meals, he forsook his phone for two months while hiking the appalachian trail. he really grew. he learned about the world and the people in it. how both fair and cruel it could be.
i think i’ve used this word a thousand times by now but jamie is most certainly sage. he uses his factual knowledge and his experiences to mold his everyday life. he knows not everything can be learned from a book. he makes choices based off of what he’s learned. he adapts. he changes his beliefs when new things come to light.
jamie, in short, is a thinker. he’s considerate and thoughtful and pensive. everything up to this point in his life has made an impact. to say it doesn’t would be a lie. he wants to make good decisions. he wants to help people where he can.
a no-so-brief character study in the form of an interview. these start off pretty basic and get more involved and descriptive the further it goes.
What is your full name? Any nickname(s)? Why were you named that?
“ my full name is jameson quentin bryce the third. isn’t that something terrible? i don’t think anyone who’s known me more for than a minute has ever called me jameson, it’s either jamie or ‘hey you with the hair’. obviously my father and his before him had the same name, too. they did it to preserve the legacy of the bryces or some bullshit like that. i think it’s just because they weren’t creative enough to come up with a better name. ”

What words and/or phrases do you use very frequently? Any reason why you say them a lot
“ i say ‘i mean’ a lot. i just always feel the need to clarify when i might not actually have need to ?? it probably might be condescending and i swear i don’t mean it to be. i mean, it’s not meant to be, but i like making sure people are sure -- if that makes sense ?? i also use ‘um’ and ‘uh’ a lot. filler words just come in handy when my mind is working faster than my mouth is. ”
What do you have in your pockets right now?
“ three dollars and twenty-eight cents. a receipt from the gas station with a to-do list scribbled on the back of it. my keys -- wait, not my keys. fuck, i might have left them in my car. damn it. anyways, i have a roll of gaffer tape and a sharpie in them as well.
What do you always carry on you (pocket knife, gum, mints, lighter, etc.)? Why do you always carry it?
“ sharpies. i always need one to write or scribble on something. people also have a tendency to steal them. i might have to start labeling them. ‘jamie’s sharpies’. that seems like it might be going too far. honestly, at this point, though, i spend more money on sharpies than i do on coffee. ”

college-aged jamie was definitely a mess. he was eighteen years old and high on the taste of freedom for the first time. where his parents went to school to learn about hard facts from droning professors and endless stacks of bound books, he learned about the world in the arms of others and with the taste of vices on his tongue. he found himself enjoying life for what seemed like the first time but then it becomes so pointless. he lost sight of himself, he lost passion he once had. days blurred together and he wondered what it was all for. it took a stark realization that he couldn’t continue in the fashion he was headed to make him get back on track. maybe it wasn’t the path his father wanted him to take, but it was one he was happy with. one he could see himself continuing down without ending up in a spiral.
definitely, definitely, jamie after graduation changed. he traveled and he grew. he learned about the world outside his borders. his favorite place he visited was peru. it was old and it was beautiful and completely different than anything he had ever seen before. he spoke to the people who lived there about their lives, about their cultures. it was nothing he expected and everything he never knew that he needed. for as young as he was, he had certainly become something of a sage being, having become wise beyond his years. he'd learned to watch and listen. he realized that not everything could be taken at face value.
as capricious as jamie can be, the one thing i think that remains consistent with him no matter what or where he is is that he cares for people. he cares for people deeply. perhaps it’s a result of not getting enough validation when he was younger, but he always makes sure people see their own worth. he points out when they’re doing well, he gives them compliments. it can seem a little chiding, a little condescending, but he never means it as such. when he was young, it was never pointed out what he did well, only ever what was not good enough. it has given him a complex of sorts, if i'm being quite frank.
in between him needing to be actively working on set, more often than not he can be found with a book in his hands. sometimes it’s tomes like war and peace. other times, it’s some cheesy novel that most would think he has no business reading. frankly, he likes the feeling of the weighted paper in his hand. it doesn’t matter (or so he would claim) that it isn’t good, so long as he has something to pore over. he has a bad habit of leaving his books around the set. he'll tuck things on shelves, walking away when he thinks he’ll have a chance to come back later.
my favorite headcanon is one i came up with very late in writing my app but i think it says a lot about him. this boi loves jeopardy. he records every episode if he knows he’s gonna miss it. it’s such a guilty pleasure. his dream job (of all the pipe dreams) is to literally be the next alex trebek. once he was drunk, stood up on a table, and sang, “this is jeopardy” for half an hour. someone has it on video. ANYWAYS if jamie gets home late from work, to calm down, he’ll put it on. he'll do whatever he needs to get done, absently answering questions when he hears something he knows. also, if he is watching it with others, he makes it into a drinking game. if he gets something wrong, he takes a shot. if someone else gets something right, he takes a shot. he usually doesn’t take too many.
there's an unmistakable mark that privilege leaves, staining the wearer with ink only visible to those unlucky enough to not have it. jameson bryce iii, however, has managed to rinse it off. maybe it's the way he leans back in his chair, legs spread, a goofy smile on his face as he scans the room. he's approachable, exceedingly so, and nothing about him is snooty or standoffish. since sitting down, he's asked question after question, leaving me to wonder if it is me conducting the interview or if it's him. in front of me is my notebook and pen. in front of him is two cell phones and a laptop opened to an email client. he apologizes for how rude it seems but there's an important email he claims he just cannot miss.
joining me for coffee, jameson -- rather, jamie, as he insists -- opens the floor to conversation about himself easily. however, it becomes clear how loathe he is to talk about his father's company, the esteemed bryce technology group. he glosses over questions with a practiced ease, as if he has been prepared, and few vary from stock answers he has offered reporters before. the one thing he lets slip is that technophiles should be on the lookout for a new form of smartphone to be coming this fall. when asked for more information, he waves his hand absently, saying, "it's going to be a wet dream for nerds everywhere." as crass his words are, the smile on his face is playful, if not all-knowing. he mentions how nowadays he only helps out with his father's company in his spare time. his main focus is on new coding within software, ensuring a stern eye is keeping watch for any bugs or flaws.
spare time is a fleeting thing nowadays for the youngest member of the tech dynasty. he caused a stir when it was announced he was taking a sabbatical from his father's company, and more flurries of rumors were unleashed when his name was seen amongst the crew list of valence studios. when asked, he doesn't lose his grin. if even possible, it grows wider. there's something enchanting about how he speaks -- a true passion lies within bryce for the show and what he does. he speaks in a babble only professionals would understand when it comes to lighting, and it becomes clear to me that bryce is more multifaceted than people realize. i did wonder aloud, however, if bryce's enthusiasm came from a late experience of some sort of youthful rebellion. in response, he can only shrug his shoulders, saying, "whatever happens happens. i won't say no to chances and opportunities if they're offered to me. who am i to reject fate?"
i ask him about this -- his belief in fate or lack thereof. for someone so young, there is a sage sort of aura that lingers around bryce. he is pensive, considerate even, and there is always a hesitation before he gives an answer. he speaks with a solemn sadness of how his mother always called him an old soul before she passed away. "i remember my mother telling me that the world might open doors when i should be going through a window. i never really understood what she meant until now." he talks about how his name and family opened doors for him in his youth, he talks of how in college he only jumped through hoops and through windows. bryce explains that he's realized that his choices don't need to be consistently one extreme or the other. he can vary things, he can find a medium place.
my final question for bryce was this: "where do you see yourself in five years?" he takes a long sip of his coffee, his gaze turning away from me for the first time today, before saying, "i'd love to be on a beach sipping mai tais somewhere. realistically, i'll be working alongside my father. i couldn't say i'd be opposed to working for countenance still, if we still don't know who killed wren by then." he winks at me, saying even if he did, he wouldn't reveal who killed countenance's unfortunate victim.
the story of a boy starts with nothing more than silver spoons and wax seals. he sees the world as wires and circuits instead of flesh and blood or tape and glue. it must be so lonely knowing what he knows but somehow he goes on and on --- heaven help him.
