Opening (free) fanfic requests !! The Martian !!
I never see ANY AUs for The Martian. Fics are very canon compliant. So, on the course of a 7 hour drive, I broke down several possible fic AUs I would love to write and I humbly ask that anyone still in this fandom will take a look and maybe comment/DM a request with them!
boundaries: No smut. Only doing Beck/Johansson for romantic prompts but Iâll do any friendship prompt. And Iâll write almost any angst, but I am not comfortable writing on-page đ/noncon, but if you want angst, Iâll consider a âclose callâ thing. Just ask first.
Concept: Cute. Simple. Everyone loves it. Thereâs something so cozy about band found family fics. Think about the scenes in the movie with all of them in the common area. It would be that same domesticity, but for example, instead of fidgeting with cards on the couch, Beck is tuning a guitar.
I donât care about the music genre, really. Of course, disco is what my brain says first. But then again, itâs a running joke that ONLY Lewis likes it. The others donât. So perhaps something else. Iâm open to suggestions. Though, may I offer, no matter what they do, there has to be a cover of The Final Countdown - Europe. That is literally a song about Ares III. Donât know it? Go listen. Listen to lyrics. Now. Anyway, I donât do music, so I hope it doesnât show when I randomly assign instruments âŹïž
Melissa L. Sheâs obviously the lead. Though, I think it depends on the song. If it sounds better with female vocals, sheâll carry, but otherwise sheâd be okay doing background. She probably writes the songs or chooses the covers.
Alex V. Get this man on a keyboard. It just makes sense in my brain.
Rick M. He does drums, because I feel like heâd enjoy just hitting shit for a living. And if a song sounds better with male vocals, he gets the microphone.
Beth J. Whatever itâs called with the person outside of the recording room, controlling the autotune. Uh. Hold on.. Okay, my dad says itâs a Sound Engineer. Beth is that.
Chris B. Electric Guitar. Why the hell not.
Mark W. Bassist. This really plays into the canon âinsecurityâ of being the lowest ranking member of the team and probably being forgotten by the public. But dw guys, heâll get plenty of love.

Concept: I mean. Hear me out. Itâs not much different? Thousands of miles from âearthâ (as in, land). Still forces that close proximity that evolves into found family (and subtle codependency). The same level of high stakes. Just a little less government approved. I feel like this has room for a lot of fun scenarios.
Melissa L. Captain! Duh! She would be a great hands on captain. She wouldnât be caught dead just drinking and barking orders. She would make herself useful and lead by example. I also imagine sheâd be ex-coastguard. Became the very thing she swore to destroy.
Alex V. Heâs organizing the maps and routes. Also! For a pirate, you know heâs loyal. Heâs got his lass back home and will sail home with his earnings for her.
Rick M. Obviously would be Melissaâs first mate. Who else? Also ex-military. Mutiny. In a pirate timeline, Air Force wouldnât be a thing yet, so this actually leaves space that maybe he was WITH Lewis in the coastguard and they both betrayed their oaths.
Beth J. Sheâs the one in the crows nest with the telescope. Searching for land in the day, measuring the stars at night. I think sheâd like astrology/astronomy. Pointing out Orion. Or pointing at Mars. âI wonder if mankind will ever see it up close.â
Chris B. Of course, heâs the medic. Itâs his problem when someone gets heat stroke or scurvy (âi told you to eat more lemons!â) Or. Yknow. Gets stabbed. Thatâs a concern as well.
Mark W. Heâd be the cook or something. Closest I can get to a botanist. Can he grow potatoes? No, but he can cook them! Heâs also the guy they send when thereâs hull damage

Concept: when I was a kid, this was my dream job. The study of mythological creatures to prove existence (sasquatches, Nessie, UFOs, skinwalkers). I used to throw open books and Polaroids all over my bed, studying. Go outside, flashlight and walkie talkie (thank you, father, for condoning me and being the guy behind the screen). So this AU would be in the Appalachian Mountains . This involves a lot trekking through the woods at night and there is found family behind it. Watch a show like Mountain Monsters. Thereâs lot of cryptozoology shows on Discovery+ for reference. Fascinating stuff, even if most of them are scripted
Melissa L. The leader. Her job is to make the plans. Sort the team into groups A and B. âGroup A enters on the east side of the woods. Group B on the west. Herd the cryptid to the middle.â That kind of thing. And itâs her responsibility to decide when âokay, whether itâs a cryptid or a normal animal, we have pissed something off. Everyone slowly get out of the woodsâ
Alex V. Professional tracker. He knows how to find and identify mud prints, broken twigs, etc. Heâs also the friendly guy they sent to go talk to the locals and ask questions about sightings
Rick M. Get this man a gun. Cryptid or wild animals, someone always need to have a weapon on things like this. He would also help Mark (view below)
Beth J. Head researcher. Sheâs the one staying up at 2 am, knee deep in folklore forums to understand what they are hunting. Thatâs her main job. On the field, sheâs got the camera.
Chris B. Mostly just an extra number. Patrolling an area and need an even number when they split up. But in the event of an accident (preferably this will never be worse than someone twisting their ankle over a log) thatâs his unique role on the team
Mark W. Trap builder. Will probably accidentally catch a coyote and NOT the Jersey devil. But hey, he tries. This can be a pitfall or some kind of bait cage. He DESIGNS the traps on his own, but itâs a two person job of labor to make them work. (View Rick)

Concept: Oh, how I love these AUs. My first ever fanfic I ever read was TCFSV (Tommyinnitâs Clinic For Supervillains). I love stories with powers and with âvillains are actually the good guys / heroes are actually the bad guysâ. I am cringe but I am free. Plots about cool city battles and secret identities and undertones of political corruption and propaganda
Melissa L. sheâs obviously the leader of the team. You get the idea by now. All the AUs have that. Her power is water manipulation (inspired by her past in the navy!). This also translates into breathing in water (by moving water and creating an air pocket)
Alex V. Fire creation (but not manipulation! One he makes it, itâs out of his control). This could make great visuals like setting off explosives. Still the bomb guy.
Rick M. Telekinesis. Nice and simple. But he can only focus on one thing at a time and if he gets distracted, heâll drop it. Example: Stops a piece of debris from crushing him, but now if someone shoots at him, he canât stop bullets or even pay attention to the bullets
Beth J. Electricity/Tech manipulation. Not storms or lightning. I mean disabling camera systems and what not with a flick of her wrist.
Chris B. Healing powers. no, he cannot bring back from the dead. Yes, it costs energy so do not make him do it often.
Mark W. Plant manipulation. It sounds useless, but it can actually be made very useful. If he has enough time. Itâs rather slow, but he can break a buildingâs foundation by growing roots beneath it

Concept: This one is so easy. I truly do not need to change their characters much. Their skills translate perfectly and it could make for some amazing scenarios!
Melissa L. As usual. The leader. Sheâs making the plans. Sheâs in the earpiece. She might even be in the field.
Alex V. He can analyze areas and figure out where the threats are. Chemical hazards, tracking bugs, etc. he maps the place. And he designs smoke bombs and stuff.
Rick M. If it has an engine, he can fly/drive it. Heâs the one being sent out when they need a helicopter or a getaway car. Or, heck, on an undercover mission, he can smuggle the others in a truck and lie off his ass to the car guard.
Beth J. Sheâs hacking computers, disabling cameras, downloading data, getting into encrypted files, etc etc.
Chris B. Field medic. But he also just has a good poker face. He can be sent undercover and trusted to lie.
Mark W. Heâs the guy who can take a broken drone and fix it with a few paper clips. He handles equipment. Whether designing it or repairing it.

Concept: An absolute classic. Has potential for high stakes scenarios or quiet domestic scenarios. They all have great skills for them too. I guarantee they are all capable of surviving an apocalypse.
Melissa L. You already know. You get the idea. She leads ration runs and she distributes tasks around. Sheâll stand in front of the fire and go over an incident that occurred that day and what they can change in routine.
Alex V. Heâs a chemist. He can purify water, test soil, take care of fire. Just all those simple sciences.
Rick M. He does a lot of supply runs. Makes camp defenses. And also can handle map reading.
Beth J. Sheâs the smallest. She can slip into places the others canât for supply runs. Sheâs also in charge of documenting events in a notebook and handling the radio.
Chris B. Arguably the most valuable. A man who has medical knowledge. He knows how to stitch someone up, how to heal diseases, how to work with limited resources.
Mark W. He can grow food! Heâs so useful! Heâs also just smart in general. Can maybe fix an abandoned truck and get a full more miles in it.
