Camera equipped aerial drones and weather balloons, action sports cameras, trail cams, 3D cameras, IP equipped remote video cameras, smart phone cameras, infrared cameras, thermal cameras, and digital SLRs will be used to collect primary images, video, audio and time-lapse sequences. Various means of triggering cameras, such as motion, heat, sound, air pressure, light, and face recognition can be explored. Random, unprotected IP video cameras, webcams, other web-based resources can be mined to collect secondary image material. Expert guidance is available to students wishing to make use of 3D monitors and projection systems, time-lapse and stop-time capture processing, and the layering, blending, animation of images in Lightroom, Photoshop and After Effects. These image capture systems and processes can be put to the service of a wide variety of practices including surveillance, sousveillance, voyeurism and exhibitionism, biological research, behavioral investigations, data collection, and story telling. And, as they engage with this technology, students will be encouraged to integrate new skills and understandings into their own artistic vocabularies. Each student will be expected to create and maintain their own web presence and to contribute images, video and writing weekly to a class website. Active web and class participation is expected.
