Right to an Education- Ammendment to the Constitution

As part of our Government class we were tasked as a group to create an amendment to the Constitution and then post it to whitehouse.gov. We saw the need to secure the right to an education as the children are the nation's future. We would greatly appreciate it if everyone would sign and share this petition! Have you noticed the mantillas worn by the First Ladies in some of our pictures of Presidents talking with the Pope? The long black lace veil–and modest all-black clothing–is traditional for women to wear when meeting the Pope.

Probably the prize for most stylish wearing of a mantilla goes to First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, who made the mantilla look chic during her visit to the Vatican in March of 1962.

The First Lady met with Pope John XXIII. This photo was taken in the American College of the Roman Catholic Church of the United States in Rome. Mrs. Kennedy is accompanied by Monsignor Martin J. O'Connor (at right). Students of the college lined the hallway and clapped as the two passed by.

Seeing how 'Me Before You' has, among other things, served to highlight the controversy over the death with dignity laws, what is your opinion as both a doctor and Christian on this topic?

I hadn’t heard of “Me Before You” so I had to look it up. 

I absolutely believe in letting people die with dignity, but I do not support euthanasia or physician-assisted suicide. I think you can die with dignity without ending your life on your own timing. Part of my pro-life belief is that I should respect both the beginning and the end of life, and I shouldn’t support ending it prematurely. That’s an unpopular opinion. 

I try to wrap my head around what would lead a person to choose suicide over so-called “natural” death. But I haven’t been terminally ill. I haven’t been in extreme pain and I haven’t experienced mental illness so severe that I wanted to die. So I can’t pretend to understand what goes through someone’s mind when they choose suicide. I had a family friend who suffered from severe depression who ultimately chose to end her own life with a gun after pills and therapy failed her. I know that for her, suicide was the the way her body succumbed to her mind’s illness. Her life and its end were tragic and very sad, and a part of me understands why she chose it and yet I still can’t support a system that makes that choice easier.

This is not to say that I think people should suffer at the end of their lives, especially in an effort to prolong that crappy life. They shouldn’t. There is little else that bothers me more than doing CPR on someone with terminal cancer. I am an enormous supporter of hospice programs and palliative care and I have seen MANY people have very dignified, comfortable deaths in hospice care. Hospice has been shown in numerous studies to improve patient-centered outcomes like depression, pain, and quality of life because of the focus on the patient’s comfort. For some diagnoses (particularly cancers), hospice and palliative care have actually shown to prolong life, and that life is of higher quality than one lived outside of palliative care. I have taken care of my own family members and patients in hospice care, and I think it’s a great way to reach the end of your life on your own terms. You can die comfortably at home and enjoy the people and  things you really value at the end of your life. 

Both sides of this argument are about relieving suffering. I’m all for that. But when there’s an option of relieving your suffering and possibly dying later and happier on your body’s (or God’s, however you see it) own timeline, I just don’t see the point of prematurely ending a person’s life for the purposes of relieving suffering.

Why do Christians tend to see great importance in spreading the word of God?

Because if someone saved your life, wouldn’t you want to tell the story? 

When you’re in a really wonderful relationship, don’t you talk about it?

If your dad was super famous and he made, like…everything… wouldn’t you brag about him?

If you were filthy and disgusting and poor and sick and neglected and someone came and cleaned you up and gave you nice clothes and took care of you, would you keep it a secret?

If you were an orphan and were adopted, would you want other orphans to find a family too?

If a powerful king (or ok, the president) came to hang out at your dirty-socks smelling dorm room and eat ramen with you rather than stay in his lavish place, wouldn’t you think he was pretty cool?

If you found endless resources, wouldn’t you point other needy people to them?

This is how Christians feel about our faith and about our Father. He has changed every aspect of our lives. When you find something really awesome, you tell other people about it because you want them to enjoy it too.
