Naoya peeked around the corner, checking to make certain no medical staff inhabited the hallway that led back to his office. The physician’s agents seemed to patrol everywhere, blocking his paths and inhibiting his progress, all eager to direct him to Yanagiya for one thing or another. Physical check-ups, blood samples, medical testing, vaccine administrations, the list never seemed to stop growing, and with each absence, the medical staff seemed to grow more and more persistent in their ‘good will’, some going so far as to attempt a check up on the spot. He was usually successful in getting away in time, albeit with a curt excuse or a quick u-turn, but he had been successful in evading their efforts thus far.
Unfortunately, JPs was an organization which kept far better track of its medical records than most Naoya had worked for in the past, and examinations seemed to rack up at a rapid pace. This allowed his absentee pattern to quickly be noticed by medical personnel, far more quickly than he would have liked. At least in past organizations, he could usually pass a nurse without their insistence he accompany them to the infirmary.
While he was fairly certain his body carried little if any difference between himself and a normal human’s outside of his coloring, he had never liked to take the chance. In the past, he’d been subjected to testing from the odd curious demon who noticed his unusual brand of longevity, or the odd doctor who thought it worth their time to care for his health, all regretful situations to find himself in. It truly didn’t matter, not in the end, and Naoya had tried to make it amply clear that he wasn’t worth their time. Irritatingly enough, they never seemed to believe him, insistent to the end. Thick skulled, the lot of them. Their supplies would be far better suited to personnel who would expire after a single life, their time better spent caring after those whose existence still mattered, whose lives carried greater value.
And so he continued to duck, to dodge, to evade. It almost made for an entertaining game, really, and perhaps that in itself made the affair worth it. And—there it was!—he had finally arrived back at his office without too grand an incident, finally ready to continue where he’d left off in his work.
With a sigh of relief, he opened the door.
